Vladifan 680 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 OK, this is probably a dumb question that 9/8ths of you already know the answer to. However...When it's stated that Montreal has exclusive rights for (?? - time period) to bargain with Sundin, does that pretty much seal the deal for both parties? Thanks. They have until July 1st to get things ironed out. I have read a 2 year deal worth 13.5-14.5 million.
Cicada 4 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 there's probably some conditional pick involved if he does sign i'd imagine. i can't see the leafs giving permisison for nothing... especially to the habs
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 It only seals the deal if they come to an agreement. It could very well be that come July 1st, no agreement has been reached, and Sundin won't want to play for rival Montreal. But it's 50/50, from what I understand right now. Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 The only agreement is that Montreal has permission to speak to his agent about the possibility of playing for the Habs. As Sundin is still under contract to the Leafs, no team in the league may speak to him or his agent about signing without the permission of the Maple Leafs. All this does is give Montreal a week and a half head start in free agency talks. While it's nice to have, it is by no means a guarantee.

Wow, that is way to much to give up for a guy who would be a UFA in two weeks anyways.

wingsdiehard13 33 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 I'm under the impression that the habs would have to pay that ONLY if they signed Sundin Yeah, I know. Sorry I didn't make that very clear. My point was, thats too much to give up, for a guy who you can get just by signing him to a contract, rather than trading him.

Yeah, but waiting until July 1st allows a lot of other teams to start throwing money and years at Sundin. You run the risk of his asking price going higher, or an extra year being added, by waiting until he's unrestricted.

Can I ask you where you are getting that info from...from what i've heard for the past 2 days is that its pretty much a done deal !!
SweWings 45 Report post Posted June 22, 2008 No... Seriously... No... I'd have a period of mourning if Sundin went to Montreal...
Valas19 50 Report post Posted June 22, 2008 It's hard to believe he would make that switch. That's about as bad as Johnny Damon going from the Red Sox to the Yankees or that Michigan player going over to Ohio State. I still can't believe that guy made that switch. I hope he breaks his leg in his first game (not Sundin, I like Sundin).
