Ridiculous Contracts

Is it just me or are some of these contracts worth way to much damn money...

I love Malone but an average of 4.5 mil a year

Mike Green for 5.25 mil?

and Corey Perry for 5.35 per year?

These are all skilled players dont get me wrong, but these guys are being well over paid. I think we even overpaid Stuart...dont get me wrong he could have gottan alot more from another team, but i think that in Detroit he is getting paid pretty well what he brings to the table. Malone is a great player but not worth 4.5 million yet. I mean if you are going to give him that im terrified to see what we are going to have to give flip and franzen. I think the only decent signing so far has been Dupuis. They got him for 1.4 million? Thats a good signing, maybe even an under payment. Anyone else think these are extreme overpayments for some of these players?

Well, those are risks for those players. They could develop into great players so in the long run it might not be that crazy. Malone is an overpayment, I'm not familiar with Greens' skills, and Perry very well could continue developing into a great player, though a *****.

I think they are all over payments, but that is what happens when you pay on potential.

But this only makes Holland look smarter for getting Z at 2.5, 2.7, 2.9 when he did, Z looked prime to break out, the two kids and a goat line was looking damn good, damn good.

Green is going to be a stud so I can understand why they locked him up with a nice contract. Maybe a little overpaid but in four years, we could be saying he was underpaid for a couple years of that contract.

I figured Green would get around 5mil so I cant say its that much of an overpayment as he was a great player this year for both the Caps and Canada. But as for Perry and Malone I think its quite a bit of overpayment.. I have never though that Perry was a great player or had superstar potential, but Burke is the greatest GM in the NHL so who am I to question him?.. and Malone.. wow.. I would have thought in the 2-3mil range.. but I guess Tampa sees something in him that I dont for 4.5mil..

This is how the NHL works now. Just like the NFL, the pricetag on players continues to grow every year. A few years ago, 4 mil a year meant you were probably a first-line player or a top 2 defensemen. Now 4 mill a year is what 2nd-liners and top 4 defensemen will be making. It's just the nature of the beast.

Holland signing Kronwall long term a few years ago may have raised a few eyebrows, but now it looks like a great deal...Same can/will be said about this deal with Stewie.

Add to that Datsyuk (definitely a discount) and Cleary.

Holland imo best GM, well besides Burke of course

I think Tampa was just in a hurry to sign some "bigger" names before free agency. I think they are so desperate to imrpove that they will overpay just about anyone that could make them a little bit better. I think Maloone will be good for them but not for a contract that gives him 4.5 mill average...Perry is a little ***** and i dont see him developing into anything other than a good agitator with a little scoring touch in the future. Greens good and all but i didnt think he was going to be banking 5+ mill.

Im still hung on Stuart, i cant decide if i am glad that we have a great defense now or depressed because now we have less money for a Rolston or Sundin....decisions decisions

The Kronwall one did make me wonder back then. He wasn't able to stay healthy a lot of times so I thought 3mil was high.

As for Burke being the best gm? Yeah that signing of Bert for 8mil over 2 years was a great signing.

How much less money do we have, capwise? Calculating all the little loopholes in the cap confuses the hell out of me. It doesn't strike me that we're in any different situation than we were before, overall? All our calculations were done pretending like Stuart was staying, I think.

Oh i was under the impression that we only had enough money to sing a rolston or Sundin if Stuart wasnt resigned. Ill be stoked if we can still add a big name forward, so hopefully you are right. But im guessing all the people that were hoping to get Sundin AND Rolston are now dissapointed, unless there we still have a crap load of money left, but i dont think we have that much.

Do you think its the cause of the players being more greedy or the GM's trying to stay competitive and offer the best deal regardless of how ridiculous the price is? Or is it just the fact that the Caps go up every year so there is more money to throw around?

It's a little bit of all of that. As for the players being greedy, the GM's are offering it to them. If all of the GM's aid I won't pay this price then it wouldn't be a problem. But guys salaries are going up cause the cap is going up. And now with the cap it seems that teams are trying to make long term deals and to do so you have to over pay right now anyways. Green will be worth that in a couple years.

And why does everyone think Rolston and Sundin are out because they paid Stewie a whoel 750k more than what they wanted to. They were planning on signing him, or wanted to, anyways and still go after a top 6 forward. The Wings have the money, this year anways, to sign either one. Sundin makes more sense since it would be more likely a one year deal.

Just a rumor from TSN, so could be total BS. But speaking of ridiculous contracts...

Sources tell TSN as many as four teams have table offers for the 37 year old, including one undisclosed team who has offered a whopping 10 million per year on a multi-year contract.

let's put it this way...

those are big bucks but long term contracts. which indicates one thing:

GMs assume salary cap will be rising next seasons and moreover: the rise

will be steeper than most of us think. in effect Stuart's $4.75M now

(1/14 of currect salary cap) may soon become say 1/18 of Wings player

budget. and this is a huge difference. under $56M cap Stuart is making

8.4% of salary cap. if the cap goes up to $70M that would only be 6.8%.

with that in mind these figures get lower.

just think of Datsyuk's contract. back then we all thought of his $6.75M

as of grand larceny. couple of seasons later we call this a masterstroke

of Kenny Holland. and this is rightly so because he anticipated (or knew

of) NHL revenue growth and went with a contract that is great for his

team's future.

still, in my belief those new salaries are quite huge. a bit above what

I would call optimistic estimations of revenue rise... but I don't know

what GMs know :)

100% true.

The cap is financial prudence. Teams are going to feel their way through and learn what works and what doesn't. It's not like a team is going to go all New York Yankees and spend a billion trillion dollars thus making it bad for everyone else, because they can't outspend the cap - it is a hard cap, for the most part.

So let these other teams overspend and then find themselves in salary cap hell. We seem to have a front office that knows what is up with this cap thing and how to work it. And remember: as the cap goes up, so do salaries. I like the system, I'm getting used to it, and I don't want the PA to overturn it next June, so keeping them happy counts for something too.
