Sources tell TSN that Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Dan Boyle has waived his no-trade clause and has agreed to a trade to the San Jose Sharks.

The paper work confirming Boyle has consented is being processed right now and once signed by Boyle, it will clear the way for the Sharks and Lightning to complete the deal.

In return for the 31 year old veteran defenseman, its believed Tampa will receive a package that will include 23 old defenseman Matt Carle, a 1st round pick, a prospect and a 4th round pick.

Sources say defenseman is also part of the deal going to San Jose.

The Vancouver Canucks and Philadelphia Flyers were the other two teams who made in to Boyle's final three trade options.

Wow.

I've made excuses for this Lightning team recently, but this move is just horrible.

The new frikken owners signed him to a lucrative contract back in February. Than they decided to trade him a few months later? Huh? Boyle is about as responsible as Lidstrom for the success of the Lightning - they were a better than average team with him, and the worst team in the league without him. And they think this trade is going recoup any of that? Matt Carle is a good young kid, but he's not going to contribute more than 30 points. The draft picks? TB is the worst drafting team in the NHL, so you can pretty much pencil those in as useless. Their defensive corps, collectively, might not score 60 points next year.

TB went from contention to the John Taveras sweepstakes pretty quickly.

So Tampa Bay really is going to be the new Penguins eh? All Offense and no defense.

looks like it , although i'll enjoy watching Tampa's offence than i do the Penguins , i just can't make myself enjoy watching a team with Crosby on it. lol

Teams are nothing without defense: The Lightning are going to be awful (like the Red Wings last Feb) and the Sharks are going to have a great defensive team.

Pittsburgh finished in the top 10 in goals against and played a very effective trap until they ran into the Redwings. They can play defense.

They also played an already defeated Ottawa team, a Rangers team who couldn't score all season long; and a Flyers team that was without a few top players due to injury. Yeah the Pens got there and tip of the hat to them, but those were series that were basically won before they started, they really didn't break a sweat prior to the Finals. All these newspaper articles bashing Hossa for going to the Wings are pathetic; the Pens media are still making excuses and crying, only thing they haven't done is ask Sid what he thinks this week.

Remember to take Carle out of that list. San Jose did well to replace Campbell with Blake and Boyle. It looks like their 7th and 8th defensemen (whoever they'll be) would crack the line-up on most teams. That sounds like Red Wings.

....That has nothing to do with what I said. Why are you mentioning Hossa? In the regular season, Pittsburgh finished in the top 10 defensively. That's all.

And we caught just as many breaks as Pittsburgh did. Nashville lost its top players, Colorado ended up fielding an AHL team, and so on.

I'm genuinely curious...how many teams in the East finished in the top 10 defensively? That whole West vs. East thing...

There is no East/West mentality, but the West does have definitively better competition in my book.

7 of the top 10 were from the West. The East, unfortunately, has the displeasure of playing host to the 3 most embarrassingly bad franchises - ATL, TB and Toronto.

Did Boyle want out of town for some reason?

I find it strange that Tampa starts working to make themselves a better franchise then they lose their best D man. Maybe he not a Melrose fan. I can' t blame him there.

Kind of strange would like to know if there is more to this story then we are currently hearing.

they asked him to waive his NTC because they need cap space

There is no East/West mentality, but more and more defencemen are moving to the West for forwards and the West spends significantly more on defence than the East. :D

Dan Boyle loves Tampa and is loved down here in return. He is currently building a house in the area... his wife is from Tampa... etc etc. The hot rumor was that he would only accept a trade to Ottawa (logic being that Tampa is close to the wife's family and Ottawa is where his family is), but apparently that was not the case (Ottawa didn't have much to offer besides Meszaros anyway).

Bottom line though, this was purely a cap move. He will be making nearly 7 mil for the next six years, which was too much for the new ownership's liking. I think Boyle is a great defenseman, but I think the Lightning did the right thing in shipping him off while the goods were hot-- once Dan is 38, that deal might not look nearly as good.

Now the Bolts are back under the cap and have room to work with. They get Carle (I would've preferred Ehrhoff) and it looks like the prospect is Devin Setoguchi (SJ's first rounder in '05).

The defense will most likely shape up like this:

Carle-Kuba (I really wish they would've traded Kuba too... he's not worth his salary)

Ranger-O'Brien

Lundin-Picard?

I can live with the first two pairings (I am a fan of Paul Ranger and I think Shane O'Brien is underrated), but that third pairing scares the death out of me.
