redwinger4747 6 Report post Posted July 8, 2008 While this doesn't do anything for the Bolts problem of no D, Recchi did play well in Atlanta. 40 pts in 56 games, not bad for a 3rd-liner. With Tampa's top 6 set, why not add a cheap 3rd-liner who could put up 40pts?
miller76 463 Report post Posted July 8, 2008 Not a bad pick up for TB. But that performance in Atlanta probably played into his new paycheck. I thought that was a little on the high side for him, but good for him.

Jericho613 74 Report post Posted July 8, 2008 I can't wait to see Melrose and the Bolts fail miserably. Spending money just to spend money, they should have put some money into the defense.

Glubki 17 Report post Posted July 8, 2008 They still have 8M in cap space. I wouldn't be surprised to see them add a couple of veterans like Jason Smith, Matvichuk or Aaron Miller.

I could see them trying to get Kubina back, since Feaster never wanted to lose him in the first place.

MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted July 8, 2008 I'd have to think the plan all along was to add one more defenceman via trade, and maybe one via free agency (I'd think Jason Smith is a target).

Ya, sources tell me that a trade is in the works for picking up Smith. But what do "sources" know, they are generally full of s***. Mack, as a Leaf fan, would you be willing to get rid of Kubina? I've got a lot of Leaf fan friends, and alot of them want to keep him around because of the way that he finished last season. But, his NTC is null right now, until August or something, correct? You've gotta think that Fletch is trying to dump him, because it doesn't seem all that likely that he will be able to play all season up to his $5 mill (or whatever it is) contract. Jason Smith is a UFA, so Tampa wouldn't have to trade for him. Yeah, I don't think Kubina's value will get any better than it is right now, so I'm all for moving him. Fletcher has said that all offers for Kubina so far have been low-balls. Kubina played very, very well down the stretch last year, and upped his value in a big way. Obviously, McCabe is the prime target to run out of town right now, but I don't think Fletch will move Kubina unless he gets an offer that is really good. They have until August 15th to trade Kubina, but even after that, I can't see him not wanting to go back to Tampa Bay. He's always said the hardest thing he ever did in his career was leave Tampa Bay. Edited July 8, 2008 by MacK_Attack

It'll be interesting to see if there will be any suitors for McCabe and his behemoth of a contract (then again, he'd have to be compliant too, I guess, thanks to Fergie's NTC). Personally, I think he's the kind of guy that would play better anywhere other than the limelight of Toronto, but to what degree, I'm really not all that sure. Personally, I think he's the kind of guy that would play better anywhere other than the limelight of Toronto, but to what degree, I'm really not all that sure. McCabe's contract is only $750k more per year than Kubina. Given what defencemen make nowadays, McCabe's contract does not seem nearly as bad as it once did. Only the no-movement clause still has odour to it. McCabe wants to be out of Toronto, it's just a stupid game of chicken between him and Fletcher right now to see who blinks first. But, as far as I know, the plan right now is to make McCabe a healthy scratch until he agrees to leave a team and city that does not want him. Glubki 17 Report post Posted July 8, 2008 Stamkos is going to cut into that 8M considerably.. Yeah, that is why I think they will sign a few "value" type defensemen this year - they would have to get real creative in order to afford Kubina after signing Stamkos. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted July 8, 2008 Stamkos will get a 3 year entry level contract... he wont get more then a million even if he deserves it. As for Rechhi, glad to see he got signed. One of my favorite players ever, did great things for Atlanta last year, and I expect the same in Tampa, espicially with the amount of great forwards around him.
