Blue Jackets send RFA Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard offer sheet

My buddy just called me who was at the Blue Jackets season ticket holders press conference and he said that the Jackets have offered Jimmy Howard a contract for 2.5 million a year for 4 years. This is terrible news because I do not see any way that the Wings can match this offer. It appears that the Wings will lose Howard. The Wings have 24 hours to match it. I can't find anything on the offer sheet yet, but my buddy is at the press conference and he said they just announced it there. Jackets GM Howson states that talks arent going well with their current starter Leclaire and that they may lose him to an offer sheet from another team.

F*ck :o

I'm stunned... wings can't match this one... and 2.5M isn't even a first rounder compensation

This is a shame. I really don't see how he'll be able to stay with us now.

I always thought that Howard would be our goalie for the future, but now it looks like Conklin and Osgood are going to be the only goalies playing for this upcoming season.

I don't think it would be smart for the Red Wings to match that anyways. Is Howard worth that much money to us? Also sucks that he is going to a division rival.

Oh well... :(

Sidenote: Doesn't a team have a week to match the offer not just 24hrs :S

I don't think it is a huge deal. We have Conklin and didn't we just draft a goalie? We should be fine.

I don't know why people think McCollum matters. It'll be years before he even turns pro let alone joins the team. Howard was drafted five years ago.

And he probably wouldn't have played a significant amount of games this year. Sure it sucks we had him for years expecting him to be a regular goalie for Detroit, but since I doubt Detroit is going to match the offer they have to work with what they have.

Bulls***.

A. What GM floats potential RFA offersheets to a STH get together?

B. Saying the Wings have 24 hours to match (when the deal hasn't even broken the news wires yet which would happen within minutes of going through the League offices) is another red flag. The Wings would have a week.

C. Who in their right mind floats a $2.5M/yr offer to a goalie that has 8 career games and isn't even a lock to be our backup?

This rumor stinks of a buddy trying to con you.

Thread on the meet from the BJ section of HF including quick notes from fans in attendance. No mention of Jimmy.

I'd laugh if Jimmy was reading this and he saw this and was like OMFG OMFG IM A MILLIONARE in hopes that the offer was true.

Exactly. So McCollum is five, six years away from making an impact. He's not in the mix.

And I'm with NN, by the way. Last night I was sort of willing to believe it because when I read it, the thread was only two hours old and news isn't always that fast. Overnight it would have made the headlines somewhere. It hasn't. So I think Howard is perfectly safe.

IIRC, RFA compensation is based on total contract value and not yearly value.

So, were this offer real...Holland would be a fool to match. Howard is not within five years of being a $2.5m goaltender, and such an offer sheet unmatched would yield the Red Wings four first round picks, possible more. Imagine the Red Wings having FOUR top-ten picks in upcoming seasons? I'd trade Howard for that in a god damn heartbeat.

Are you sure? I always thought it was averaged yearly.

No; RFA compensation is based on the yearly amount, so Detroit would only get a 2nd rounder.

Of course all this is a moot point right now because we haven't heard any legitimate sources yet

2.5M$ = one 1st rounder, one 3rd rounder.

No, this year it's only a second rounder. It changes with the cap.

I'd give up Howard for a second rounder instead of matching that contract if it were real. He won't be worth that within four seasons, and he'll be UFA after it.

This better not be true.

Imagine Howard becoming real good within the next couple of season and playing for a Division Rival after all the time the Wings spent on him! f*** that.

Even if this is true....He didn't say that Howard signed it.

Thats exactly why they want howard...

Yeah right. Leclaire is a good goalie. I don't think it is true because Leclaire probably won't make that much and at least he played some quality time as a goalie.
