egroen 384 Report post Posted July 13, 2008 Yeah, Detroit is obsessed with sports... not any where near the size of New York, LA and Chicago yet still easily supports 4 major sport teams.

adtthosa 5 Report post Posted July 13, 2008 The only mention of hockey whatsoever was "Dallas Stars" in the Austin paragraph. Not surprising, but lame. Good read though, I enjoy these kinds of articles.

SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted July 13, 2008 http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/post/Forget-...-?urn=top,93426 first thing i noticed no detroit i dont get how they put Boston on the list and not Detroit. New England Patriots Boston Celtics Boston Red Sox Boston Bruins New England Revolution (Major League Soccer) Boston College Eagles Boston University who is usually respectable in college basketball Not sure if they have an arena football team or not. The Patriots have been a football dynasty lately, the Celtics just won an NBA championship, the Red Sox are one of the most first identified teams in Major League baseball. I understand your hometown/area not making the list but that should not mean NOT putting Boston in such a listing. They are one of the best sports cities in the country whether we like it or not. SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted July 13, 2008 Los Angeles lost two football teams. They shouldn't be in the running for crap. They have two NBA franchises, one that just went to the Finals and that is probably the first team identified when you think of the NBA. They have two MLB franchises even though one is technically located in Anaheim. The other one, the Dodgers, is one of the more popular ones in MLB. They have the LA Galaxy, which includes David Beckham, one of the most first identified athletes in the world, even though I know soccer isn't the most popular sport here. LA Kings LA Avengers (Arena Football) And USC and UCLA is there, where the two are huge sports rivals in pretty much anything and everything and USC has been a college football powerhouse for many recent years. They should probably be in the running.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted July 13, 2008 ATLANTA as a sportstown WTF Atlanta Braves, which has been one of the better/more consistent teams in MLB for over a decade. Atlanta Falcons, which will always have plenty of recent attention for better or worse with the whole Michael Vick drama Atlanta Hawks Atlanta Thrashers Georgia Force (Arena Football) Georgia Tech Yellowjackets, usually a solid representative in the Atlantic Coast Conference in sports located in Atlanta And nearby Gerogia Bulldogs, a solid SEC representative in sports, and will contend for a National Championship in football this year if things go their way. Could definitely be a sportstown.
Doggy 130 Report post Posted July 13, 2008 Why does arena football count? Seriously, that game is a joke.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted July 13, 2008 (edited) Why does arena football count? Seriously, that game is a joke. Cause it is a professional sport. You could just as easily say Major League Soccer is a "joke" probably due to its popularity among people in here, but it is still a professional sport as well, and people outside of here probably like those two sports, and I'm trying to give an overall perspective listing as many professional/major collegiate franchises as possible that I can think of. SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted July 13, 2008 (edited) Why does arena football count? Seriously, that game is a joke. Also, people in here could easily just as say that Austrailian football is a 'joke' since many are probably not all that familiar with its rules, intensity, and so forth. I'd fully expect you then to tell us then what makes that game as good as it is, and also tell us that such cities perhaps like Melbourne or Syndney in Austraila where you are from are good sports towns because they probably have good professional Austrailian football teams or other professional sports of Aussie origin or origins of other countries. EDIT: Other cities not included on the Yahoo blurb that I'd consider as solid sports meccas, keeping amount of sports franchises/consistently performing college teams in the area in mind, and/or overall population (in no particular order, preference, rhyme/reason)... Detroit Dallas Houston Denver San Jose San Diego Salt Lake City Miami Tampa Bay Philadelphia, as much as I hate Philly fans generally speaking St. Louis Minneapolis Pittsburgh Cleveland Buffalo Edited July 13, 2008 by SouthernWingsFan
BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted July 13, 2008 This article isn't about which cities have the best teams, which which cities is it the best to be a sports fan. I have no idea how Austin is on that list. It's a great city for live music, drinking, and cute college girls. But they've got UT sports and a minor league baseball team, that's about it. Listing the Dallas teams under Austin would be like listing the Grand Rapids Griffins and West Michigan Whitecaps under Detroit.

Unless you're a huge UT fan, Austin isn't really a sports town. I'd say listing the Dallas teams for Austin is more like including the Chicago teams for Detroit. henrik40 76 Report post Posted July 13, 2008 I can understand why every city listed in the article is on there. However, biased as I may be, I don't understand how Detroit is not listed. It's easily one of the top sports cities for both performance and devoted fan base, but whatever.

The AFL (that is, Australian Football League) has the second highest average attendance of any professional sporting league in the world. It's also 120 years old. Arena Football is the pathetic bastardisation of a legitimate and great sport played by washed up CFL players. And I have watched it as I have tried to give it a chance but it's ridiculous. I didn't read any more of your post. Why would I when you compare Arena Football to soccer and Australian Football? Edited July 13, 2008 by Doggy

The way you slammed it though, you'd probably think twice when people who are uneducated about Austrailian Football slam the sport, and you'd tell them about the good things about the sport. And Arena Football has players from Division I-A colleges as well, not just Canadian Football players like you are falsely assuming.
stevie for president 42 Report post Posted July 13, 2008 uhh guys, they didnt consider hockey as a sport in this article. the only mention is the stars are driving distance to austin. so dont get too upset. if you have to include hockey as a sport im sure detroit is up there. and for all the people that say detroit isnt a great place to live, outside of the city limits its actually a great place to live.
