heyfolks 8 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 Lilja will be gone by opening day. They have to omany d'men and not enough money. IF, and i think this is unlikely, Q makes the team, they have already told him he will need to fight. Cleary - The guy still has plates and screws in his jaw. He isn't dropping the mitts. Franzen - never was, and won't be a fighter. I am worried he is another big man with an eggshell head. Stuart isn't a fighter. That 13th forward is Mac or Downey. If mac is offerd a 1-way deal anywhere he takes it and they sign downey, who cleared waivers a few times last season. Otherwise, they give mac the 2-way and send downey packing. Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 (edited) If Downey or McCarty aren't brought back, then there won't be a fighter. It's ridiculous to think that guys like Franzen, Lilja, Cleary, etc. will fill that role. Just because they have decent size doesn't mean their fighters. I mean, Eric Daze was 6'6, and I can't recall him ever fighting on a regular basis (or even at all, really). ...and whoever mentioned Kopecky earlier, please... just... no. He is so pathetic in virtually every aspect of the game, not even including fighting and toughness. The only reason he looked so good in his one fight is because it was against Patrick Sharp. Sharp can't even fight his way out of a wet bag let alone another hockey player. He's makes Lilja look like the reincarnation of Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson. Downey is the best choice the Wings have got; he's a heck of a lot better fighter than McCarty can ever hope to be anymore. But, if it's not at least one of those two, then I can only imagine the next best option would be someone like Quincey; that is, if he's still around next season. Shutemdown 23 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 Lilja can drop the gloves, Franzen is a big force out there, and Hossa can stand up for himself. Don't forget Cleary. Cleary and Franzen have the grit or the size, but not exactly the mentality that is required. Personally, I liked Lilja as an enforcer. Everyone on here seems to rag on him, but I'll be sad if they trade him away... He played very well with Lebda in the playoffs. Anyone who wants to talk sh*t about him can try and picture who else on our team lays down to block shots or drops forwards in the corners. Lilja's big frame played an important role. Also, he wasn't afraid to defend his teammates. If nothing else... we have Ericsson and Quincey and Abdelkader... I could've sworn I read that Ericsson and Quincey stick up for teammates. I'm not expecting them to be enforcers... but maybe one day. I'd say keep trying for two-way contracts with D-Mac and Downey.
Shutemdown 23 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 If McCarty and Downey both leave, or dont play in that many games, who would are fighter be. Does Brad Stuart drop the gloves at all, or you think the Wings would bring up some tough guy in the minors. Remember last season the Wings didnt have D Mac, Downey, or Drake and they didnt win. I think its important that the wings have someone that can stand up for his teamates. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PViiw8yKiAw Or go to youtube right now and type in "Aaron Downey Trash Talk". We need to keep Aaron Downey. He's a great enforcer...

2probert4 8 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 Lilja, He dropped em with Neil and Phaneuf and i forgot :|... He also tried to ruffle some other feathers, but no one was really to dance. Quincey/Ericcsson, They are both up/comers will need to make a name for themselves.. I'd expect Quincey to get 1:10 fights/Games ratio.. Big rig a tad less. because he adds more to the team then kyle.. Stuart, Has gotten fighting majors, But really hasn't deserved em.. But i would almost rather have Stuart railing people and skating off, Then having him in the Pen Box for 5 mins. Kopecky, He hasn't shown a willingness, But i think that is because his confidence has been in the toilet for most the season, Confidence is a hell of a drug. Hopefully he can gain it quick and become a solid drake replacement. Potential Darkhorses would be.. Justin Abdelkader, I heard that he fought a few times in the USHL, and gotten in 1 fight at MSU? i hear that one is debatable.. And in Muskegon, some local guys were saying they talekd to justin and justin said if he got on the ice with crosby he would of got him to fight with him.. Interesting.. But thats a rumor.. Jamie Tardiff, If Mac/Aaron are not available i'd like to think Jamie gets a few games next year.. He is a fighter, Not an enforcer he reminds me of Eric Nystrom tbh. But very un-polished. another long shot to make the wings though Randall Gelech, He's disapointed me so far as a griffin, Im hoping that we can add more toughness down in GR, Maybe gelech can get the Chris Kunitz syndrome.. Gelech pretty much has a 0% chance of hittin Detroit any time soon, unless he has an amazing camp. ---- This yer im not expecting anymore then 15 fights to be honest, We are not going to have a set in stone enforcer nor fighter this year. But thats ok, As long as we have players who can stick up for eachother regardless of who they are on the team. Lilja held on for dear life in the Phaneuf fight, if you can call it that. Same with Chris Neil.
2probert4 8 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 liljia gets traded, big Q fights...plus with the xtra money we sign both dmac and downey Quincey was quoted as saying Holland told him to work on his fighting. Maybe he will pound Tootoo.
2probert4 8 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 Sammy is willing, we just have to teach him how to do it properly. Give Downey the contract. Hire Mac as the Enforcer Coach. (Or the other way around if they would prefer it.) Someone said Q has been working out with Downey this summer. Does anyone have a link to that? IIRC, the person who said it didn't have a link, but others had read it as well. I've only seen one video of Kronwall fighting. Let's just say it would be best for team morale if he kept his gloves on. Joe Kocur worked with Jiri Fischer in the past, when he was a Wings assistant. egroen 384 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 Hire Mac as the Enforcer Coach. As stated above - this needs to be Kocur. He is still around and he turned Fischer into quite the scrapper (one punch knockout of Hartnell remind you of anyone?). Quincey likes to fight and Ericsson will, but he needs to add a few pounds to his frame to really be intimidating.

NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 OFFTOPIC Moen - Ott - Tootoo That line would be my favorite line to watch. They could call it the "Reverse Production" line seeing as that they would get scored upon religiously.

Moen is a career minus player and Ott isn't much better. On a team that hasn't missed the playoffs since before he was there he's barely cracked a plus season. GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 I want to see Lidstrom drop the gloves at least once in his career. But besdies that I don't like the idea of teams having designated fighters every man on the team should be ready and willing to fight, its part of being a team and sticking up for each other. Nick did get a roughing penalty early in his career. I can't see him doing that, but it would be awesome. You can just tell under that calm exterior, he could tear a spine out. The most raddled I've ever seen him was during last years playoffs when he was face to face staring down Iginla. But not really enforcer material. You guys must have short memories, since Lidstrom does have one fight in his career. It was when Tinordi jumped him and pounded him during a line brawl. A pretty cheap move by a cheap player, but it did register as a fight nonetheless. Lilja held on for dear life in the Phaneuf fight, if you can call it that. Same with Chris Neil. Actually, those guys were the ones who held on for dear life. He landed on top of both of them, thus registering them as victories in my book. You're just one of those people who want to diminish his undefeated season. Well, it's not going to work with me.
