MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted September 15, 2008 Wayne Gretzky said today that he won't be picking the Canadian roster for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. This is more or less an endorsement for Steve Yzerman to take the job, but Gretzky says he wants to coach the team, instead. The announcement of who will be Executive Director of Canada's 2010 Olympic team will be made in a few weeks. http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2008/09/15/gretzky_2010/

Louisville 112 Report post Posted September 15, 2008 (edited) Gretzky is average coach at best. Babcock is the best Canadian coach. I'd agree, but Gretzky has more pull in these types of things, and if this opens the door for Yzerman to pick the team then I'm all for it. MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted September 15, 2008 My guess is that there is some kind of back-room deal here. Gretzky publicly removes his name from the director position and in exchange, he'll be named coach of the Olympic team.

Yeah, I am all for Stevie getting what he wants. But it will be a hard pill to swallow, with him at the helm of another organization! Could you imagine him taking over a team like Anaheim? I'd be torn.

As far as I'm aware, Detroit hasn't let anybody speak to him about a GM position yet. I know the Leafs requested permission to speak to him and Jim Nill at various points and we're denied on both accounts.

An in interview with Illitch a while back, Illitch mentiond that both Nill and Yzerman had Executive added to their title's. Along with executive came the salary that most G.M.'s make, so if Nill or Yzerman leave it wont be for money, It would be because they want to run the show... Yzerman has made it quite clear that he is interested in being a GM someday and tha the understands that it probably won't be in Detroit, at least not in the shorter term. He'll likely leave at some point and it definately won't be for money. He'll want to get paid an appropriate amount, but he'd be going to run a team as you say, not to make more money.
