The Bertuzzi - Matthias (+ picks) trade

It's been done to death. At the time I thought it was a decent trade considering what the other teams were giving up on deadline day. Of course as it turns out it was a disaster as Bertuzzi failed to have a significant impact and Matthias has gone on to become one heck of a prospect, but I can't blame Holland too much. And besdies, Matthias would be in the same boat Abdelkader is in at the moment.

I'm not going to worry about it too much. Not even Kenny can win 'em all.

Oh, for the love of EVERYTHING.... IF YOU WANT TO TRADE FOR SOMEONE, YOU NEED TO TRADE SOMETHING FOR THAT SOMEONE. At the time, Bertuzzi was still capable of being quite the power forward. If he'd done better and helped us win the Cup, you wouldn't be asking this question. When measured against what the Sharks paid for Guerin, what the Predators paid for Forsberg and what the Thrashers paid for Tkachuk, we got Bertuzzi for nothing.

Hindsight is 20/20.

Wait...you mean you can't get any player in the league for Lilja, Sammy, Hulder, and a pick? I was under the impression you could.

You can't win them all, the trade was a good idea at the time. Since we really have no idea how Matthias will turn out, its still too early to call it a bust.

For everyone still worried about how we gave away a great prospect in Matthias... he was sent down to the minors by FLA yesterday.

Great prospects never play in the AHL? He's 20 years old. There's plenty of time for him to develop into solid player.

And some still think highly enough of Bertuzzi to pair him with a 50 goal scorer on the first line.

You just never know. If it were easy, everyone could build a Stanley Cup winner.

So I'll admit that there was a little snottiness in the tone of my delivery of my post about Matthias being shipped down... he certainly can and has the time to develop into a skilled player... so my apologies to him.

My overall thought on this subject is that in order for the Wings to put the best team on the ice, from time to time we are going to have to take chances on players that may not work. We also may have to give up prospects to make those chances happen. Yes, Bert was a bust in the eyes of the us the fans and obviously to Ken Holland ...and sure, Matthias might end up being the second coming of Christ. (um, right...)

I acknowledge that it stings to lose that prospect. Lets be realistic though, the Wings are not hurting because we gave up one decent (possibly amazing) prospect. Ken Holland is not second guessing himself as a GM because of this move.

If Matthias was your favorite prospect of all time, well... it sucks your guy is gone.

It also sucks when other teams get to reap the benefits of your elite scouting, or the error of a chance taken.

It's how team, trades, and the league works.

If Matthias were still here he would be playing in GR. We already have 2 great prospects that are NHL ready or nearly so in Leino and Helm.

So did it hurt to lose Matthias. Sure, but is it a disaster, hardly.

Kenny rolled the dice with Bert and this time he lost but the risk was not a big one and the loss isn't huge

I cant believe this topic is STILL being talked about. Todd Bertuzzi would've been skating around with Lord Stanleys Cup on June 8th 2007 if Patrick Marleau doesnt break Mathieu Schnieders wrist. And then everyone would've said what a fantastic trade Kenny Holland had made. But instead we fall short, and Holland gets flack for dealing away one of several talented prospects we have. It's a null point. Matthias would still be behind Helm, Emmerton and Torquato as far as center prospects are concerned on this team, so I just dont know why people think the deal was so bad.

Matthias was never behind Torquato; he would be behind Helm and Emmerton though, and would be fighting for position with McGrath and the like.

My point was he'd still be like 3rd or 4th as far as center prospects are concerned haha. He just isnt a big lose.
