It's called "Over the Salary Cap"... and Lilja alone gets the Wings below it.

I still think they would trade one other player just for a little more wiggle room, but I strongly believe Lilja is to be traded -- it just makes so much logical sense.

I agree 100%. I'd love to see Lebda gone, but he's playing for peanuts so trading him is going to free up zero cap space.

Meech is playing for peanuts as well, so dumping him doesn't help.

Oh, and when Lilja was re-signed Holland called him an insurance policy when referring to the potential signing of Stuart.

Quincey's struggling to take and run with an oppertunity to succeed in the NHL that he's being given since playing in the 07 playoffs.

Yeah... ok.

He's been called up due to injuries and played well when he was needed. He came through for us last year come playoff time and proved he could hang.

Am I saying he should be on the roster right now? No. But am I saying that he's tried and failed with every opportunity given and he doesn't deserve to still be around? Nope.

I think you're wrong in saying that he was basically handed a chance and he f***ed up, whereas he was given a shot at playing and he played, but there are others that still take the spot over him.

Look at Ericsson. Everyone lusts over him, he's been called up a couple times and played well, he has all the tools necessary, but he'll still play in Grand Rapids. (You can bring up waivers all you want, it's still, in reality, the same.)

With our logjam on D, it's not surprising that Quincey doesn't play, but don't discredit him by saying it's because he's played poorly. Give credit where credit is due. It's going to be quite the feat cracking this line-up, no matter who you are, but very little will come down to skill.

I watched him play on Wednesday and he was probably our best defenseman out there along with Ericsson.

You're right that he hasn't failed yet. I am worried that he will, however, if only because he's competing against people who are showing up right now as being better than him. We all know he's capable of playing better than he has over the last year in GR and during the call-up in Feb, but that knowledge of potential will only get him so far.

As far as everyone lusting over Ericsson- that's because he's the real deal. Hell- Babcock wanted him to stay with the team last year after they called him up in February and reluctantly sent him back down once everyone was healthy again.

I disagree that the result's the same for E being sent down due to waiver free status. The whole organization is salivating over Ericsson and he's impressed at every single opportunity. If it came down to keeping Ericsson now or exposing him to waivers the Wings would keep him now 100 times out of 100. Do I have E blinders on? No, but I'm a huge fan of his based on his play, drive, personality and potential. Ericsson really is the Wings' ace in the hole as far as prospects are concerned.

Easily. Quincey has far less potential than them, and while Pyett doesn't have his size he outplayed Quincey by far during training camp. Pyett really made an impression on the Wings management. Nicastro is a fresh draftee with more potential than Quincey ever did. Nicastro projects as a top 4 d-man, Quincey's struggling to take and run with an oppertunity to succeed in the NHL that he's being given since playing in the 07 playoffs.

A lot needs to go right for those guys to ever surpass Quincey.

What exactly do you mean? Quincey is being given too much credit for a few playoff games two years ago. He's done nothing since.

What I mean is that Nicastro is only 18, has just been drafted, and it'll be 3-4 year at least before we get any idea whether he's capable of playing and performing in the AHL. He might never make the NHL.

Same deal with Pyett, but he's made a good start.

Quincey might be struggling right now, he might have only played a few playoff games, but the fact is he made it there through development and even if the Wings trade him he'll end up on another team and will be a regular. Nicastro and Pyett might not get to that stage, even if they appear to have more potential.

You missed the last part....

I'd actually say that is a clear sign they are shopping him, and boosting his value a bit through the press.

And as for "Who will replace Lilja on the PK?" -- Stuart will.

Lidstrom, Kronwall and Stuart will see regular PK duty... Chelios of course when he is playing and Rafalski is definitely capable of playing on the PK. If Quincey or Ericsson make the team, they will see time and Lebda is fine on the second unit as well. I am unsure about Meech.

Also look at TOI, which may or may not be an indication as well. Last game Lilja had 16:42, lowest of the 6, with his competition Meech getting 19:09 (4th most). Ericsson was between them. Game before, Meech led all D with 24:09 (and had the lone Wings goal) when Q got 2nd lowest TOI with 16:04.

Lilja is the most logical to go. If he doesn't, then it has to be Lebda. If Lebda goes, then Maltby or Samuelsson has to be the departing forward. If Lilja goes, then the forward can be McCarty or anyone else.

There is the chance that more than one defenseman is traded, but at least one of Lilja and Lebda will be removed.

Stuart was paired with Kronwall on the PK during the playoffs. When watching the games it was Lilja and Lids; Stuart and Kronner as the two PK pairings.

The Wings only had Stuart for a quarter of the season and then not even all the playoffs... and they did fine on the PK without him. They will do fine without Lilja.

I have no problem seeing Chelios continue to log a lot of PK time.

But I don't think Chelios will play more than 35 games this year, barring injuries. I think Raffie is too small and is more of a PP guy. Lebda is took weak defensively to play PK...that leaves Lilja, Quincey, or Meech. That is unless they unload 2 D-men and Ericsson makes the big club. At this point, I just don't think it will be Lilja who gets traded.

He didn't have one shaky game! He was shaky in every single call up game last year. He was shaky in every single AHL game last year. Quincey's had more than a year since that 07 call up to prove himself and all he's done is erode the good faith he earned back then.

youre the only person that I've read saying that, they were pretty high on him again last season, and during the off season. Holland approached Quincey and told him to work on his fighting skills....

Wanted to add that Bob McKensie just added on TSN that Quincey and Meech are ready to play in the NHL, and may be dealt for draft picks....But then he adds what is known by all, that Lebda and Lilja could go also.... DUH

I haven't heard anything from Holland about whether or not he's keeping Lilja. All I've heard is Babcock giving a pat on the back to a guy whos done ok as a 5-6 Dman. But heres the shocker - Holland is the GM, not Babcock. And while Babcock is instrumental in managing decisions, he sure as hell doesn't have the ultimate say, and if Lilja is the most logical answer to our "over the cap" problem, then he goes. Whats more is that he doesnt leave a hole. As has been discussed here at length, Stuart has the more physical resume vs. Lilja. And the PK can easily be taken care of.

Agreed. Quincey looked pretty awful tonight.

I would be shocked if Q makes the team.

Quincey looked a little nervous but not that bad. What really stood out was how bad chelios was. The game has passed him by. His brain is too slow to keep up with the pace of the game. He looked brutal with every shift tonight. It was actually a blessing when he got injured to keep him off the ice sheet.

Chelios played great tonight, he made one mistake and Howard bailed him out. No defenceman tonignt played bad at all.

I thought Chelios looked really bad tonight also, almost like a coach trying to play instead of being behind the bench... hey... wait a minute....

I thought that Quincey looked sub-par again, which is beginning to be a trend from what I have seen from him. He looks timid, and not too strong on his feet. He let some guy spin out of the corner on him right to the front of the net early in the 1st. Stood out to me as something that you wouldn't naturally see from any NHL defenseman, but everyone makes mistakes maybe I'm being too critical.

Yeah- Lilja definitely looks like a man playing for his job... god I wish he played like he was playing for his job every game. Inconsistency is definitely his failing.

Quincey... well he wasn't as brutally bad as he was during the regular season call ups this year, but he didn't sparkle out there. I liked that he stood up for himself there in that mini-start of a fight. At times he seemed ok out there... but he had some real shaky points too.

Lebda looks ok, though. Kronwall and Rafi looked fine out there- although it was especially painful to see Rafi robbed of that goal by superman's magic back-swinging stick!

I thought Lilja looked great in the Canadiens game.

Lebda was typical Lebda, he didn't look bad or good, was just kind of their and solid (aka a good #6 or 7 defenseman) while Quincey looked out of place at times. I don't think he moves his feet well enough in his own zone, and it causes him to take a few to many penalties.

I don't know I think that Quincey or Lebda are the two that should be on thier way out possibly.

Personally, I just want to see Quincey play agian in the regular season before we give up on him. He is a big physical defenseman who isnt afraid to drop the gloves, and deserves one shot. I would prefer him over Chelios as well
