Tuesday morning practice

There's no official roster announcement yet, but here's who's on the ice right now for this morning's practice ...

Leino-Datsyuk-Hossa

Franzen-Zetterberg-Hudler

Cleary-Filppula-Samuelsson

Kopecky-Draper-Maltby

Lidstrom-Rafalski

Kronwall-Stuart

Lebda-Lilja

Meech-Ericsson

Osgood

Conklin

Obviously that's more dollars on the ice than fits under the cap. But the exclusion of Kyle Quincey, Aaron Downey, Darren McCarty and Darren Helm are of note.

Tomas Holmstrom is not on the ice. He missed some action late in the preseason with a banged up knee, but he did play in Sunday's preseason finale.

Well what do you expect then? None of the other guys are playing. And sorry it says "it appears Leino has made it" but thats a clear sign that he did make it

It says to me that if Holmstrom is injured Leino will be the one to take his place. It may appear that way but it's better to err on the side of caution until official announcements are made.

imagine that, a guy no one had heard of a year ago is playing on the top line (at least temporarily) of the stanley cup champions who also happen to be the deepest team in the league. not bad!

I still think they pulled off the biggest bait and switch of the year with the Brunnstrom thing. For all intents and purposes the wings were high on Fabian, other teams saw a Swede that Detroit was interested in and that had to perk a few ears.

Then with everyone looking at their right hand the left comes in and scoops up what could prove to be a great signing of Leino.

Must say if this is true and Leino makes the team I am extatic. This guy seems to be a real deal NHL player. Dont get me wrong I would love to see Helm still with the team but we all know what to look forward to next season. Quincy big deal just glad Ericsson made the team. Big punisher. As for Downey big deal if he gets picked up on waivers everyone complains we need an enforcer, but the fact is we have guys who know how to hit and take hits. The only thing I wish would happen and I know its been beatin to death is a trade of Samuleson. I feel Leino could start in his spot on a line with Flip and Clears. Lets see how this plays out. Cant wait till Thursday will be on my honeymoon watchin hockey. Nothing better.

GO WINGS

Exactly what I was thinking. From relative obscurity to the pinnacle of hockey in one short preseason.

Is it Thursday yet? :ranting:

Great news.

Hopefully the case will be "Brunnstrom who?" although he'll get more ice time than Leino.

And Janne Pesonen (most points last season in SM-liiga,one point more than Ville) didn't make the Penguins roster...

Update after Tuesday's practice: The Red Wings have placed enforcer Aaron Downey on waivers. He has 24 hours to clear. If he clears, he can be sent to Grand Rapids (AHL). Depending on other moves and the salary cap situation, the club also could elect to keep him on the NHL roster. Downey twice cleared waivers last season.

"Right now I don't know what's going to happen,'' Downey said. "I always have a good attitide. Whatever happens, happens. If I got to go to Grand Rapids, I got to go to Grand Rapids.

"I know I had a good camp. I made some improvements, worked on my skating this summer. I feel I'm quicker. I feel like I'm a top-five enforcer in the league. I believe I do my job excellent. I think this team really needs me, especially this year because when you're on top of that mountain, people start coming.''

Right wing Darren McCarty said he will start the season on injured reserve due a groin strain, which he doesn't believe is a long-term issue.

Tomas Holmstrom didn't practice, coach Mike Babcock said, because of a sore foot, the result of blocking a shot in Sunday's preseason finale. Babcock believes he'll be ready for for Thursday's season opener.

Ville Leino took his Holmstrom's spot in practice on the line with Pavel Datsyuk and Marian Hossa. Leino said he hasn't been told of his status yet. Hossa, who missed Sunday's game with a sore groin, said he feels good and will be ready to play Thursday.

Forwards Darren Helm did not practice. No word yet on his status.

Defenseman Kyle Quincey said he didn't practice due an injection he received in his back. He said willl be availble to practice tomorrow, but he also does not know his status, whether he'll be traded or start the season with the team.

Jonathan Ericsson practiced with Derek Meech, but Ericsson said he believes he'll be assigned to Grand Rapids. The top three defense combinations were intact, including Andreas Lilja-Brett Lebda.

Goaltender Jimmy Howard (broken finger) practiced but is expected to be out a week to 10 days. He can't be sent to Grand Rapids until he's healthy.

well Helm did all he could this preseason... guess he'll have to wait for injuries to come back up... hopefully Leino sticks though... love seeing the young guys contribute...

I wonder if Leino has made the team over Helm or if hes just up because Holmer and Hossa are on the mend and the Wings want a backup offensive player right now. Granted they say they should play Thursday but you never know and if something does come up Leino can step into the offensive void more so than Helm with his style.

btw, fabian brunnström wanted to go to detroit but the fact that its almost impossible to crack the lineupmade him choose dallas because it's way easier to crack the lineup... Why not try with the best? I don't understand anticipated players joining worse teams just to get more playing time. Why be 2nd best when you can be the best? :D
