Sorry to start a thread about another team but in all honesty when was the last time this team was actually the least bit exciting to watch? They won 1-0 against Atlanta tonight and they must surely be the dullest team to watch in the league. Through 4 games they’ve scored 6 goals, and conceded 6. It just seems year after year they’re always the lowest scoring team in the league and half their games finish 2-1 or 1-0.

I feel sorry for their fans having to sit through such dire games on a consistent basis. And as a player surely playing in such a defensive minded team, especially for young players, wouldn’t be ideal.

compared to a couple decades ago every team is like that, though. This is why I'm for enlarging the nets by a couple inches.

Nets are fine... goaltender pads on the other hand....

Just because one goal was scored doesn't make it boring. Did you see the game? I can't comment on it because I didn't see it. And frankly, they've got a better shot at a Cup than these "exciting" teams like Buffalo and Ottawa that give up 4 goals a game. I'd rather win a Cup than be exciting if I had to choose.

The Devils have been the second best run hockey club over the last 15 years solely because of this system. I can't criticise them for choosing it.

Thanks for that marvellous bit of insight. But when all they do is play defensive hocky and three quarters of their games have 3 or less goals scored it gets a bit tiresome.

I've watched/been to enough Devils games out here to know that yes, their games ARE boring. It's a shame. It's also a reason I've been extremely reluctant to shell out the cash to see a game at Prudential yet. Given their attendance, so is everyone else (yes, the economy plays into that, but they had weak attendance before the economy tanked too).

Meanwhile, I've watched/been to the same amount of Rangers games. THOSE are entertaining.

When it comes down to it, Lamoriello won't allow the Devils to even be a remotely offense-minded team.

I don't see how the same boring style of hockey is more exciting with more goals - it's just more stoppages in play. Exciting hockey is back and forth action without any icings, offsides, or any such sloppy junk. 5-4 is not automatically more exciting than 1-0. Enlarging the nets would just encourage teams to play the same boring brand of hockey.

I agree that their games tend to be pretty boring, but not because of goal scoring, which is why I've always been against making nets bigger, etc. More goals doesn't = excitement to me.

I think you also have your facts slightly wrong. I don't remember them ever being the lowest scoring team in the league and I actually think they score a lot more than their reputation suggests.

They have been near the bottom the last few years, but not at the bottom. If you look back over the past 10 seasons, they have actually been in the top 15 in scoring 7 times. They finished top 5 in scoring 4 times (5th, two 2nd's and a 1st, yes, that's right, they actually led the league in scoring in 2001). They also finished 7th in scoring one of those years as well.

Saw this from a commenter over at NJ.com:

I need to make mention that I am a Devils fan.

I just HATE the direction that Lou has taken the franchise, creating the most boring, low-scoring, high priced ticket entertainment package.

To be honest, I believe that even the wankers in the Devils ticket and sales office are starting to understand that fans are simply not interested in watching paint dry (a la Devils hockey), and they are starting to discount tickets behind the scenes.

If you sign up for the Devils fan mail, you will start noticing that the team is having firesales on tickets to try to get seats filled (i.e. 'special' discounts for $65 seats, now priced at $35)

What this team should have done in an honest fashion is own up to the crappy product they are trying to deliver. Instead of sending out 'special ticket discounts', they should have cut ALL ticket prices by at least 50% at the start of the season.

You are not paying $95/ticket to watch the A-line, or to watch an amazing defense of Niedermayer-Daneyko-Stevens-Rafalski anymore.

You are paying $95/ticket to watch garbage hockey, with a no-name over-the-hill squad that CANNOT SCORE GOALS and plays the most boring games in the entire NHL.

Don't believe me? Get the NHL Center Ice package like I did to compare the excitement of different teams.

Don't believe me? Watch the Devils attendance figures throughout the season. Subtract at least 3,000 from the official 'announced' attendance at each game. You will be shocked...

Don't believe me? Go to a game in person and see if you are the only person sitting in your own section at a brand new arena.

Don't believe me? Go to www.teammarketing.com which does an excellent job of tracking the fan cost index. The Devils are #5 in the entire league (for the lowest scoring, most boring team) with an average cost for 4 individuals at $339.60 to attend a game in the 2008-2009 season

Can you really imaging that in this economic environment that a family/group of 4 is going to pony up $339 dollars to watch this garbage? (That represents a more than $50 over the NHL average.)

I don't think so....WAKE UP LOU.....WAKE UP JEFFREY VANDERBEEK....do you want your team to financially go down the tubes like a sub-prime mortgage?

And that's from a Devils FAN.

Sorry man. I guess I was out of line. Three quarters of their games have more than three goals BTW. But again, goals don't mean excitement. Ever seen the Oilers-Flyers series in '85?? A million goals were scored but... BOOORRRRING!!

To those that have pointed out low scoring doesn't mean bad game, I agree. But it's more the way the Devils play. Their games are low scoring because they play such a defensive style of hockey.

Thanks for posting that edicius.

$339 for 4 people to attend a regular season game? Wow, that's staggering.
