Shocking: Bad blood between Leafs & Habs

During tonight's 6-3 Leafs win over Montreal, the two teams managed to re-ignite the rivalry that had gone a little stagnant over the last little while...

Tom Kostopolous blatantly ran Mike Van Ryn from behind. Van Ryn was taken to hospital where he is being held overnight for observation due to a concussion. Van Ryn also broke his nose and hand. Kostopolous received a boarding major and game misconduct, but will hopefully be suspended, too.

Andrei Markov also hit Niklas Hagman from behind early in the 3rd and the Habs spent most of the game going after Mikhail Grabovski (another 2 points for him tonight).

For the Leafs part, they spent a good portion of the game crashing Carey Price's crease.

Should be interesting when these two teams play again, but sadly, not until January.

Saw the replay of that hit. He deserves a suspension- he made absolutely zero effort to avoid doing damage to a guy who had his back to him. That's exactly the stuff they're trying to crack down on (and rightly so- there was no need to hit him that hard on an icing play).

That's truthfully disgusting to me. I actually WINCED when I saw it. It's dumb f*cks like that who should be given the boot.

Granted, for all I know this guy could be some poster child for gentlemanly play but that's just wrong. There's ZERO excuse for a hit like that.

What they SHOULD do to players like him, as punishment, is stand him 3 ft. facing the boards and have someone from the opposing team be able to skate the whole length of the rink and just drill him in the back to try and destroy him.

An eye for an eye!

Everyone was hating on the Leafs at the beginning of the year..but in reality, they've done pretty well for themselves. Hagman and Antropov as well as Grabovski are having great starts! and for a team picked to be one of the worst, its exciting hockey! THe hit was bad though...deserves 2 game min. suspension.

It reminded me alot of the hit on Patrice Bergeron of Boston last year vs. Philly....

That hit is ridiculous. For once, the media is on to something on this cheap shotting BS. So far this season its been pretty bad, especially with reckless hits to the head and hits from behind. And I thought last season started bad with Downie and Simon.

I love physical play and hate the idea of taking the fighting out of the game, but hits like that have NO place in this game. That's stupid and dangerous and should be an immediate expulsion from the league, at the very least a year long suspension.

Interesting note, though, if fighting were allowed more frequently, would the enforcement help regulate dangerous hits like these?

I'm going to ask... WHO THE HELL IS GRABOVSKI?! I know who he is, but damn, he looks impressive.

Prototype power forward. Played for the Habs last season.

Van Ryn has a broken finger, a broken hand, a broken nose, and a concussion. He should get 10 games, or more. Set the standard, dirty hits like this with no attempt to pull up arent acceptable. I'm glad that Coliacovo tried to pick up for his player.

I read on a habs forum that grabhovski gave price the butt end of his stick after price shoved him and apparently even don cherry pointed it out after the game. If cherry pointed out something bad about the leafs then it must have happened. Cherry then went on to say he has a real poor work ethic and thats why the habs shipped him to the leafs and that the leafs will eventually get sick of him too.

I'm not buying all the comments on youtube on the video..they're saying that it was Van Ryn's fault because he didn't turn after the hit or that he knew what was coming and to take off the Maple Leaf blinders. Kostopolous had th option of slowing down on the play but he drove full force into Van Ryn from behid..there really is no defense.

i watched the game and had a few choice curse words for not only Kostopolous (sp)? but the whole habs team in general, they played crap. I felt sorry for Price tbh with the team he had in front of him sat night.

and yea price did wack with his stick but the leafs kept running into him all night. all those interference calls. price had to do something I suppose.
