Worst regular season games

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Someone in the gameday thread said yesterday's loss was the worst ever for the Wings. Not even close, I thought.

To keep things in perspective I've been thinking of games that were far more egregious and consequential than last night's.

Please nominate your worst regular season game ever (hopefully it will help make last night look insignificant in comparison).

My nominee:

April 6, 2003 Wings vs. Blackhawks

last game of the regular season

Wings lose to the Blackhawks in OT 3-4 and wind up losing the Pres trophy by 1 point to the Dallas Stars. More so than the trophy, we had to face the #7 seed Anaheim Ducks in the first round, in which the Red Wings were swept out of the playoffs in 4 games straight. Had the Red Wings faced the #8 Oilers in round 1, we may have gone on to face the Ducks in round 2 , and probably lost anyways. But still, the sweep started with the inability to hold onto a single point in the last game of the season. :(

A few games come to mind. The first was in 05-06... I think Atlanta was up 5-0 on the Wings. Not quite sure of the score, but it started out as a rout. The Wings ended up making it a game, I think, but it was a terrible game, nonetheless.

Second one I remember was 06-07 against San Jose, the night they put up nine on Hasek.

San Jose and Anaheim in October of '06. The team took a combined 30 penalties over two nights. Brutal.

UGH that Atlanta game was HORRIBLE. I don't remember how much they were up by, but it was a lot. Then the Wings fought back and tied it at 6 late only to have the Thrashers score in regulation to win 7-6. Not even a point out of it.

The Pitt game wasn't the worst regular season game. Not even close.

In recent memory, a few come to mind...2 years ago @ San Jose when Hasek got shelled, last year hosting Columbus when the Wings were playing like ooptar in February and got shut out I think.

I've watched so many hockey games since I started watching them seriously in the mid-90s that nothing really surprises me anymore in terms of having a game here and there where you just blow a lead, or have a game where you are just terrible, or a game every now and then where you just flatten your opponent.

Two years ago vs San Jose

The wings were up 3-1 after one only to be destroyed 9-4 @ San Jose

But the funny thing about it is.....the wings eliminated them in the playoffs :D

Also that 6-1 beating they took in Philly (who was the WORST team in the nhl that year)

The Philly 06/07 game still stings, and I still remember a game from the early 90's where the Wings held a 4-0 lead against the bitter rival Blackhawks. They blew it all in the third period and skated to a tie. The STL game that broke the Wings non-SO streak.

I'll take blowouts over 5 goal comebacks any day.

Agree. If the Wings are getting murdered 7-2, its two points they couldn't get (can't win them all) plus the added embarrassment as wake-up call we've all been hoping for. Games like the Pens game on the other hand is two points they had and gave one away cause they couldn't seal the deal.

In the rare occasion the Wings are getting killed, you get numb eventually when the other team scores again and you just chalk it up as a loss (like being a Lions fan, only the Lions in this case play hockey). Games like the other night are much more frustrating to watch, like when the Wolverines would kick the hell out of teams and then switch to "prevent" defense (which is the silliest concept ever, "we held them to 100 yards of offense all game, now lets give them the 15 yard passes to 'prevent' the 30 yard plays") and then the team would come back and either make it a game and have the momentum or like the Ohio State game I think 4 years or so ago when UofM had them and switched to prevent and the Buckeyes came back and won.

Blowing a good size lead and leaving with an OT-L and giving the Pens the W is more frustrating than the games like vs. San Jose when Dom coughed up 9.

As soon as I read this topic, I knew exactly which game makes this list. I still think about it time to time. February 18,2003. Vancouver at Detroit. Detroit was up 3-0 in the third period, Linden and Klatt score to make it 3-2 Detroit. Canucks pull Skudra, with 25 seconds left in the game, the puck bounces off Don Van Massenhovens skate, right to Naslund and knocks it in. Tied 3-3 going into overtime, Malik scores the game winner. 4-3 Canucks. 2003 sucked!! That Chicago game that someone already mentioned kills me too. With that win, Detroit wouldn't of played against Anahfeim.

I'm going to add a worst game that we won:

December 2, 1995 Red Wings shell the Habs 12-1. Roy is left in the game for 9 goals - and states he's played his last game for the Habs. He was traded to the Avs the next day. Had he stayed in Montreal - the Wings seemingly would have at least one more Cup.

In retrospect it would have been better to just miss the net purposely on every shot in that game.....

He was gone, either way.

HAHA I LOVED that game, I was in winnipeg for school at the time and i was going to the school the next day and was walking through the bay and they had the highlights and sports commentators talking about the game on tv for a couple hours, i missed my first class that day as i stood there and watched.

Worst game for me was the entire sweep by the ******* la kings..although that was playoffs not regular season...

Meh its a good thing like this game... game 5 didn't mean squat in the grand scheme of the season... we still got our cup without the win in game 5... it just gave us 60more mins of hockey to get to watch!

I've been watching hockey for a looooong time, and game 5 was brutal for me. I'll say that was the worst game I've seen. I was so dazed for the next day or so until we won the cup. I felt like I was living in an alternate universe and game 6 wasn't supposed to be happening. Pure denial and confusion.

Game 5 could have been a turning point if our guys weren't as experienced as they were. If the example/legacy of Lidstrom, Stevie, and Shanny hadn't been here, I feel we could have choked after that.
