Gnredwing 10 Report post Posted December 3, 2008 I have frequently seen many negative posts on Samuelsson, mostly about how bad he is. This year Samuelson is 43rd overall in the league in points and has looked very good to me. Samuelsson seems to be a bright spot in the roster so far and hope he can keep it up. FunkedUp 29 Report post Posted December 3, 2008 He's a steal for 1.2 mil. People need to realize that not everybody on the roster is going to rack up 75+ points and be a superstar. It can be easy to rag on Sammy but there are 29 other teams out there that would like to have him on their roster at that price. Overall hes very under-rated and people should give him more credit. Frankly, the only issue I have with Sammy is his continual poor shot placement - but thats more or less Sammy's only glaring weakness. He doesn't have very good instincts, he holds on to the puck too long, he tries to stickhandle when he shouldn't. He has raw talent, but his thought process gets in the way sometimes i think. I totally agree with this, but when you look at his offensive production, his defensive play, and his contract, his questionable decisions are a small price to pay, and they almost never occur in the defensive zone where it could really burn us. I think we can all agree that Sammy can be a little frustrating to watch at times. He seems to play best, like most athletes, when in a contract year. No coincidence, he is a UFA after the season. I believe, that Sammy excels on our team but would struggle elsewhere. He has bounced around the league, and if there were every someone who fits the system and would be in his best interest to stay it would be Sammy. This is something to ponder for the off-season. Would you rather have Hudler at approx $2-2.5 mil per or have Sammy at around $1.75-2.25 per + draft pick compensation for Hudler leaving as an RFA? I think they service a similar role. If Sammy goes, the wings get nothing. If Huds goes, we get draft picks to re-stock the talent for the future. Not everyone can stay and some choices will have to be made. I'm one of the first people to call out Sammy at any opportunity, but he hasn't warranted anything but praise this season. 1.2 million for his play this season is definitely a steal. Because Babcock wants both a right and left-handed shot on the points of the power play units. Rafalski makes sense. Then you got Samuelsson, Chelios, Maltby, and McCarty. If we're talking 10 years ago, I'd take Chelios as the other right PP point man in a heartbeat. But this isn't 10 years ago. Not a hard choice to pick Samuelsson from those four. Nev 1,085 Report post Posted December 3, 2008 In the last thread there was discussion about Sammy getting a lot of points this season on secondary assists on the PP - I don't know if its just me, but he seems to be shooting a lot less this season and passing to Hank instead.
