March 26th

I was watching "Classic Series" on the NHL Network earlier. Detroit vs Colorado was on. They showed some highlights, so I threw in the DVD that has the March 26th game.

Just a few things I noticed that I had forgotten about...

1. It's Mike Vernon's 300th win

2. It's Mike Knuble's first NHL game

What a way to remember that milestone in both players careers.

Also of note:

Shanahan fought Foote

Larionov fought Forsberg

McCarty fought Lemieux

Forsberg aggravated an injury in the fight with Larionov and did not return to the game; Stephane Yelle would center his line between Valeri Kamensky and Claude Lemieux for the remainder of the game.

The Kamensky/Yelle/Lemieux line were out once more against the line of Shanahan/Larionov/McCarty in overtime. The game ended with Lemieux getting caught deep in the Wings' zone, Larionov stripping Foote of the puck and walking through the defense, passing it to Shanahan, who then fed an open McCarty, who dumped it past Roy into an open net. Pretty much the only people not involved in the final play who were involved in the fight were Vernon and Forsberg; due mainly because the play didn't start at the Detroit net, and because Forsberg had left the game injured.

Kamensky finished the game with 3 goals on 5 shots; his Colorado teammates had 2 goals on 14 shots, Martin Lapointe scored two goals on 3 shots; McCarty had the game-winning OT goal on a game-high 8 shots.

And what a win it was. It felt sooo good. It would have felt good to come back from that far behind EVEN if it wasn't the avs. Then you throw in our heated rivals.

Haha, are you spouting this off memory, eva?

Some scholar you are. You know how many shots each team/player took??

That was one awesome game. Feds was on D - I liked him on D.

Vernon and Roy was a great fight. It was a great night for the Wings all the way around....well, maybe except for Maltby being such a baby when Kieth Jones and Rene Corbet wanted him to scrap. Granted, Jones would have fed Maltby his lunch, and Maltby did drop his gloves with Corbet (only to immediatly tackle him, ending the "fight" before it could start).

If I could change that game:

1) Maltby and Draper would have gone with Corbet and Jones.

2) Joey Kocur wouldn't have been a scratch.

3) Jaime Puschor would have been run over by the zamboni.

4) Brent Sevryn wouldn't have eased up on Aaron Ward.

5) Kieth Jones wouldn't have bitched out on scrapping with Lapointe.

6) McCarty would have squared up with Lemiuex, THEN pummeled him.

7) Draper would have gone after Claude himself.

8) Uwe Krupp would have been run over by the zamboni.

What a great year 1997 was!! I remember that game like it was yesterday watching it live in my living room/ den. That was some vintage McCarty if I ever saw it, kick Claude's ass and score the winner. They then met up again the the WCF en-rout to a sweep of the heavily favored Flyers to win their first Cup in 42 years!!! Man we were so into the games that year.

I wish I was old enough to remember it as well as you guys seem to. I was 7 during that game. I do remember the Aves being a source of evil worse than anything I could imagine. And Claude Lemieux was the devil in disguise (not a very good disguise). But I don't remember many of the details of that game besides McCarty fighting Lemieux and becomming my childhood hero. In my eyes it was like Superman vs. Satan.
