puckbags 863 Report post Posted December 23, 2008 First off I don't want this thread to turn into a debate on whether fighting should be allowed or not allowed in the game or whether the Wing's need a goon in their lineup !! I love myself a good fight whether its for stategic reasons or just for entertainment purposes but the quality of the fights in this league are just garbage !! Many of the fights last less than 15 seconds and are just useless wrestling matches or guys are just too damn clumsy to stand on their own two feet and just fall to ice because of a lack of balance. For instance tonight I just finished watching the Nucks-Ducks games. There were 3 fights, fight #1 Parros jumps Hodichuk after a good clean bodycheck by Hordichuk, The fight was so bad that they didn't even get major penalties, only roughing calls. Fight #2 featured Travis Moen and Mike Brown, for those who dont know, these are two big tough dudes, fight was a wrestling match, no big punches landed....BORING !! Fight # 3 Middleweight match between Kesler and Getzlaf, these two took the time behind the play to yap at each other, there was no one around and they dropped the gloves, Getzlaf proceeded to spend 20 seconds trying to get Kesler's helmet off, no punches really landed, fight over BORING !! I dont understand the point of taking a 5 minute trip to the sin bin for this garbage. I remember back in the day when guys like Probert, Domi, Kocur, Brashear etc would get there money's worth out of a fight and square off and throw bombs and sometimes the fights would last at least 30-45 seconds and sometimes we would get one of those epic 1-2 minute fights. Even back in the day when a fight only lasted 15 seconds it would usually be a flurry of punches for 15 seconds and then its over. Out of the 10 fights I see now, 8 of them are garbage, 1 is average, and 1 is usually considered good. To me it seems like guys have no balance nowadays and they just end up falling over. I want to get back to the fights like Probert-Coxe from Don Cherry's Rockem Sockem 1 ......One can only hope !!! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Maybe it's the refs breaking up any potential fight before it can happen, maybe it's that the players are pansies now, or maybe it's because the cap means any potential injury can end a playoff run. Now the guys doing most of the fighting are these middleweights, who happen to have some offensive talent. Probably a combination of fighting making a slim comeback combined with more guys willing to fight and more guys that actually have some 'character' to the way they fight. For instance: Danny Carcillo, tons of fun to watch. Throws wildly but is very capable, fights outside his weight class. Reminds me alot of Matt Barnaby when he came out accept with far greater punching power. Milan Lucic, I don't like the way he showboats b/c I personally don't think you should do it after you light somebody up. But the fans enjoy it and it does fire people up. Plus he's always willing. Cam Janssen, tons of fun to watch. He's a modern Joey Kocur. Smaller guy with a big heart and big fist. Not as big as Joey's was but he throws it with malicious intent. Plus, I love the way he shimmies around before a fight, with his arms down at his sides, almost like he's having a mini epileptic seizure. Brad May used to do that alot back in the day. Of course Boogaard, simply b/c there's never been a heavyweight his size that really had the punch power to destroy people. Along with Boris Valabik and Mitch Fritz we're starting to see a new class of super heavyweight. Of course Valabik is a puppy and Fritz shouldn't be in the league but whatever. David Clarkson is a personal fav of mine b/c he's more my size but he has a gigantic heart and can play the game as well. He's practically a mini Cam Janssen only a far better player. Donald Brashear, as much as I hate this guy and think he's one of the most dispicable, dishonorable fighters going, there's no arguing his ability. If I had to pick a top heavyweight right now I would be torn between Boogie and Brash. I've seen Boogey lose fights. I can't think of the last time I saw Brash lose a fight. Not only is his left hand quicker than hell, he is actually able to throw those punches with power at the same time. He absolutely fed Riley Cote his lunch the other day. I was embarrassed for Cote to be honest. Definitely one of the most formidable fighters the past 10 years. And this from a guy who when he was with the Canadiens, prolly back in 95 or so I watched him fight a couple of times and thought to myself....no way is this guy ever going to make it. All he does is hug and wrestle. And then you have a ton of young guys who can play the game but are true character players and don't hesitate to step up for a teammate. Guys like Derek Dorsett, Brandon Dubinsky, Shane O'Brien, etc.... I haven't felt this good about the state of fighting in the league since around 95/96. May with the flying body block just cracks me up. Chris Murray, one of the toughest dudes I ever saw, unbelievable jaw. Simply a great fight, Stojanov using reach to just land bombs Good bout that went back and forth between Cam Russell/Ken Baumgartner There's some other good ones from that year with Brad May KO'ing Baumgartner, Steve Leach and Rob DiMaio having one of the biggest blow for blows i've ever seen and Baumgartner handing out one of the biggest KO punches i've ever seen on poor Dean Malkoc. To Malkoc's credit he got up. I haven't seen anybody literally stand there dumbfounded, unprepared in the middle of a fight and just absolutely get filled in like that in a long time. The ***** antics of Barnaby in the one vs Snow was pretty reprehensible, and what made the fights better as well was the tie-downs really sucked back then, not to mention a bit less of a "defense" against taking blows.
