up2here 41 Report post Posted January 2, 2009 http://www.nhl.com/ice/app?service=page&am...erGame&pg=2 NHL.com is a great site for stat hounds like myself and I noticed some interesting numbers when looking at the top forwards ice-time. Ovechkin leads the league at just about 23 mins per game followed by Malkin at over 22.5 mpg,Pav leads the wings at just over 19. So AO is playing almost 3 more minutes per game than Pavel and Malkin is playing more than 2 more minutes. Over 82 game this is like playing between 10 and 12 extra games and may play a part in making these players more tired come playoff time.

Thanks - I have noticed that as well, and often point it out when I hear such asinine comments as, "Datsyuk and Zetterberg would only be putting up 60 points on any other NHL team". Datsyuk and Zetterberg also spend a lot of time on the PK in Detroit. Also, if merely playing on the Red Wings vaults your stats so much, Hossa should be on pace for a 120+ point year. Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted January 2, 2009 It's a testament to our depth that our top players don't have to take as much ice time and we still have one of the best records in the league. It most definitely will make a difference in the late stages.
WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted January 2, 2009 Totally random, but holy cow at the amount of hits Ovechkin has for being #2 in scoring. Only Milan Lucic, Dustin Brown, and Brooks Orpik have more in the league. It's official, Ovechkin is the most dynamic player in the league PERIOD.

But that's definitely an advantage the top teams have in that they can spread the minutes around instead of loading them up on their star player or players. NHL.com has a lot of great stats, though I liked the layout the way it was last year. This one is a little less intuitive.

I'm moving to DC August of next year, and the #1 thing I'm looking forward to is catching some Caps game. Ovechkin is bar none my favorite non-Red Wing possibly of all time. Its unreal how complete his game is. And his personality is awesome.
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted January 2, 2009 Check out where the Red Wings rank in terms of PP TOI/g in the NHL: #97 - Tomas Holmstrom #99 - Pavel Datsyuk #107 - Henrik Zetterberg #119 - Marian Hossa Heres another interesting stat. There are only two teams in the NHL who do NOT have ONE forward that ranks in the top 90 in PP TOI. Statistically speaking, each team should have 3 forwards (the top line) in the top 90 in PP TOI, but of course thats not going to be exact. There are 2 teams - Carolina and Dallas - with 5 forwards who rank in the top 90 in PP TOI, 11 teams who have 4 forwards who rank in the top 90, 7 teams with 3 forwards who rank in the top 90, 7 teams with 2 forwards who rank in the top 90, and 1 team with one forward in the top 90 (Boston). The only teams without 1 forward in the top 90 in PP TOI are Detroit and Toronto.

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted January 3, 2009 A little tidbit...Jiri Hudler is just barely behind Evgeni Malkin in points per minute overall, and is a MUCH better defensive player. If Hudler averaged exactly 19 minutes per game at the same per minute rates he has now, he'd have 22-24-46, +10 in 37 games and be among the team and league leaders in everything for scoring forwards.
