andyinsdca 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2009 This article by Mitch Albom on SI's website totally rocks. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writ...roit/index.html It's why I still say my hometown is Detroit!
Louisville 112 Report post Posted January 8, 2009 Great read and thanks for posting. Albom is one of the best at bringing you into his story and laying out his underlying point. I was born in Detroit but grew up mostly on the otherside of the state. No matter what happens, I'm still always proud to say I was born there.
Hockeytown Red Wings 245 Report post Posted January 8, 2009 This has been posted in other sports for a few days now. Probably should have posted it in here so more people would see it. Really is an excellent article. Made me beam with pride and I'm from Ohio!

Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted January 8, 2009 Excellent article. While Mitch Albom and I rarely agree on anything other than sports, it made me feel good to read that, and that's something to show people around the US that continue to shake the dust off their feet at Detroit. Thanks for posting.
egroen 384 Report post Posted January 8, 2009 Made me realize I am too hard on Albom sometimes - I may not like a lot of his articles, books and points of view, but he does go out of his way to help Detroit. He has formed a number of active charities in Detroit as well.

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted January 8, 2009 Not a fan of Albom, but that was damn good. I've also been a critic of Detroit, but who doesn't love an underdog story?
Wings_Rule_1010 4 Report post Posted January 8, 2009 (edited) Great great article. With all the Detroit bashing, it is nice to read a positive, feel-good article about Detroit. Not many people would want to move to Detroit and its suburbs, but those who live there are proud to say they are from Detroit. BTW, Albom is an amazing writer, IMO. I wish I could get him to write this 10page paper for me Edited January 8, 2009 by Wings_Rule_1010
dallas27 7 Report post Posted January 8, 2009 All four agreed to meet at Tiger Stadium, before a game. I picked up Dumars at his house. He was alone. No entourage. Next we went for Sanders, who waited in the Silverdome parking lot, by himself, hands in pockets. When he got in, the two future Hall of Famers nodded at each other shyly. "Hey, man," Barry said. "Hey, man," Joe answered. At the stadium Yzerman, who drove himself, joined us, hands also dug in his pockets. For anyone that lives in Detroit / Michigan try to notice that, if you already don't. We look like a bunch of penguins waddling down the street, hands stuffed in our pockets. It's unfortunate that this article will be tossed aside from anyone outside of Michigan. Oh well, like Albom said, this is our city. There is a ton more he could have thrown in that article as well. The DSO, the Fox, the Fisher building (which has amazing architecture in it), Campus Martius, we have some of the best medical schools around and Greektown. Pegasus has the best food you can find in Detroit. And we have the best deal in America, $5 hot and ready baby. And Vernors. Faygo. Better Made. It's easy to continue on. dallas27 7 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 I am sitting in the library at school and I almost laughed out loud. Great line. Nice. I buy at least two a week. I could go to the BK Lounge OR I could go get a pizza for $5. Tubby's anyone? Also a Detroit original. Mushroom, Steak and Cheese. Their subs are the best around. Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 I'm from Chicago, was born and raised there so I understand to a point the blue-collar we-can-stick-it-out-and-rise-again mentality Detroiters have and when people s*** on the city, I'm quick to defend it. I don't see much difference between the two cities, anyhow. It was a great read and I DO hope the city can rebound from its current lows and be a bustling, vibrant metropolis again. seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 I was expecting the typical trite bulls*** from Mitch, with the same melodramatic line repeated after every paragraph. I gotta give it to him for that one though. Great read, thanks for sharing.
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 Dad was born in Detroit. I've lived most of my life in ND. Same can-do, hard-working attitude. Detroit will rise again. Because of the people. Side note: Vernors. Mmm. You couldn't get it out here for years. Now it's a "gourmet" item, which means you pay twice the price, but dang, it's worth it. Have you had a Boston Cooler? Best float you will ever have. For those who don't know it's a root beer float but in place of the root beer have Vernor's. Best float. Sore throat? Drink some Vernors. Long day at work? Have some brandy and Vernors. Soooooo many applications for Vernors.
Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted January 9, 2009 My dad loves Vernors! He drank a lot of it back when we lived in Chicago. It must be a Midwest thing because once we moved to the South, we couldn't find it anymore.
