P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 Columbus won Washington 3-0. Steve Mason stopped 45 shots, including 12 by Ovechkin. Mason leads the league now with 6 shutouts. If nothing else, Blue Jackets have good goaltending. Last year Pascal LeClaire had 9 shutouts.
Viperar 16 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 Is it their goalies, or is it the coaching, because if so, bring that guy in. Also, beating the caps on home ice, let alone shutting them out, is nothing short of fantastic work.
RWK23 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 He's unbelievable. As a 20 year old rookie, he's arguably having the best season of any NHL goalie. I mean, wow...

I know they were talking up Mason for Calder consideration on NHL Home Ice today.

I know they were talking up Mason for Calder consideration on NHL Home Ice today. Mason is the Rookie of the Month two months running. The Jackets would struggle to win a game without him. He'd be a deserving candidate.
Blueliner 69 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 This kid is doing pretty good. I saw him in Columbus a few weeks ago when they played the Kings and he looked really good. He did give up three goals, but none were his fault. They were all two on ones with perfect passing. It's too bad Columbus is absolutely horrible or else they would have a good chance of making the playoffs. I know they are right around that 8th spot, but they look like a bunch of house peewees out there. They can't pass, dump the puck in everytime, and have the worst powerplay. YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 I don't know. What I noticed from our game the other night against the Jackets was how well the defense played. I mean they made VERY few mistakes. Mason was facing a lot of easy shots. To me, he looked like a good goalie who was greatly insulated, but not the world-beater hes being made out to me. That said, he DOES look like a veteran when hes out there. He looks very comfortable in net and looks primed to have a great career, but goaltenders are funny creatures. He'll undoubtedly drop back to earth some point soon. In the end, I think the guy thats not getting enough credit is Ken Hitchcock. If the Jackets carry on their play, with the beat up lineup that they have, and perhaps sneak into the 8th spot, I'd give Hitchcock the Adams without a 2nd thought. The Jackets are far from horrible. They have great goaltending and maybe an even better defense. If they ever get healthy up front - hell, they might even add a forward at the deadline - then I would watch out for them. With the way they're playing right now, all they need to do is score a goal or two and theyre set.
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 Yeah good point. But didn't he make 45 saves today? That can be deceiving. And I'm not trying to take anything away from Mason. Like I said, if you didn't know any better, you'd probably think he was a veteran with the way he looks in net. I just think the way the Jackets have been playing defense lately has been beyond impressive. And considering Hitchock's first goal in coming to the Jackets was to turn a guy like Rick Nash into a defensively responsible player, I wouldn't be surprised if the defense of the Jackets is insulating Mason in the same way that the Wings defense frequently does for our goaltenders. Now, mind you I've only seen Mason play twice - once against the Sharks and of course against the Wings - but in those games, the shots taken were almost entirely from the outside, and the Jackets defense did a great job of keeping the opposition there. FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 Dang it. How is Conklin supposed to lead the league in shutouts if Mason keeps getting more. OK, Conks, you're down by 2. Get to it. Stop all the Sabre pucks.

Agreed. I watched the last half of Bjs game today. Lots of the shots I saw were unscreened perimeter shots. The Bjs defense was pretty solid. But Mason makes the saves when needed (great lateral movement BTW). I gotta give more credit to Hitchcock. Seriously, with the depleted lineup he has to work with, as a whole the Bjs are playing good hockey all around. Don’t forget Hitchcock has coached a team to the Stanley Cup. He’s no slouch. Guest MrSandMan Report post Posted January 10, 2009 I would love to see another elite goaltender to wipe out Roy's records. He's only 20, and if he's the "real deal", he could do it! Puck You Roy!

He's in our division, so we'd likely end up hating him just as much as Roy. I do agree that someone needs to break all Roy's record (Brodeur is on pace for a lot of them), but I'd rather it be someone a little further from home. Haha, Florida or Los Angeles sounds good.
