YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 Don't forget Backstrom, the guy is I think just outside the top 10 in the league in points, and he's a big reason why Ovie scores the amount of goals he does. Of course, Backstrom gets a lot of easy assists by passing the puck to Ovie who then takes the puck across the ice and scores all on his own. Ovie is a perfect candidate for the Hart though. The Caps wouldn't be anywhere near the position they have now without him. Like you said, Backstrom isn't where he is without Ovechkin. Not only is Ovechkin the most dynamic goal scorer in the league, but he shots the puck ALL the time. The likelihood for Backstrom to pick up an assist playing alongside Ovy is downright ridiculous. Never_Retire_Steve 35 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 The Hart is definitely a hard choice at midseason right now. Anyway, here it goes: Hart - Malkin Selke - Richards Lady Byng - Datsyuk Vezina - Backstrom Norris - Bouwmeester Calder - Ryan Coach is so hard to give, no one really knows how effective they are without being inside the organization, from an outsider point of view though it has to go to Julien. I also like the lack of homerism in this thread, even though there are some good cases for some Wings getting some of these awards.

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 What I would like an answer for: How come everyone is picking Datsyuk (if any Wing) for the Selke when Zetterberg is being used as the team's primary shutdown forward against opposing scoring forwards. If Datsyuk was truly the league's top defensive forward this season, the team would be using him as the primary shutdown forward instead of Zetterberg. Louisville 112 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 Backstrom has been good but Tim Thomas hands down for the Vezina. No one thought Boston would be as good as they are and Tim Thomas is an important and underrated part of it. GA 51 GAA 2.04 SV%.

I wish no harm to Broduer, truly, but he's not the best goalie ever. So I guess I don't agree with most people on that one.
egroen 384 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 Datsyuk and Zetterberg are both currently averaging exactly 1:56 of PK time a game.
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 (edited) Datsyuk vs. Zetterberg for the Selke is a difficult question. Datsyuk has the takeaway stat speaking for him, he is the best in the league at that. No player can destroy the opposition's break-out attempts better than him. I feel Zetterberg is a slightly better PK-man though. He not only defends extremely well on it, but he often creates chances the other way as well, something Datsyuk doesn't do quite as often. And Zetterberg is an incredible back-checker. Sometimes he will create a chance and be behind the opposition's goal when they counter-attack, and before you know it he is back in the defensive zone, steals the puck and goes right back the other way. They're both among the Top 5 or even Top 3 defensive forwards in the league though, and I'd like to see Zetterberg get it this year if only because Datsyuk got it last year. But with the way Datsyuk is playing this season, they can't ignore him completely come Awards-time. And since it's so hard (impossible) to win the Hart on this team, they might give him the Selke instead. If he keeps playing like this though, I actually think he should be nominated for the Hart. But I too feel that it might be a goalie's time to win it this year. Edited January 14, 2009 by dat's sick
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 (edited) I feel like we've establish the distinciton between Datsyuk and Zetterberg defensively. Zetterberg is better positionally, while Datsyuk is flashy, and can compensate for (a team's) mistakes better than anyone in the league. Both players are equally worthy, but theres a reason Hank is the #1 forward to use on the 5 on 3 kill. His defensive positioning is near immaculate. If you ask me, Datsyuk winning the Selke over Hank was akin to Pronger winning the Norris over Lidstrom. Both were VERY worthy of the award that year, but the difference maker was the fact that one nominee was much flashier than the other.
