Wings & Zetterberg Close to Deal

does anyone know how retirement factors into the team's cap number? what if Z can't fulfill the purpoted 10 years?

It doesn't count against the cap unless he signed the contract after he turned 35.

People are getting way too carried away with this 10 year rumor. Thats all it is - a rumor. The Wings only signed Pavel Datsyuk to a 7 year deal - the longest one in Red Wings history - and thats because hes a durable guy whos not reckless. Zetterberg has a different history, and Holland knows that. You don't need a contract to go for 10 years in order to bring the cap hit down. 6-8 years on the deal is plenty long to alleviate some cap issues.

All of these articles say "possibly" as long as 10 years. Yes - they could also be possibly as short as two years. It could also possibly be worth 6M a year or 11M a year. Doesn't mean its going to happen.

thats a huge loophole. i suppose this means we are on the hook for Drapers and Maltby's extensions...

as for Z, i'd say he's certainly worth it. we get LTIR space if he gets hurt long-term and he comes off the cap should he retire.

It's a 50% drop from the average of the first two years (each year, after the first two, could drop as much as $8.5m) -- that contract would be perfectly legal.

I would take contracts like that in a heartbeat over a contract that paid $7m+ a year.

If he is realy good about it, and reinvesting his interest, those front-loaded contracts end up getting him closer to $8m a year.

Actually I am fairly certain it is a 50% drop by each year.

His back issues are grossly overestimated.

The simplest of back issues, such as a pinched nerve, can be debilitating to a normal person. So, for you to say his back issues are grossly overestimated, unless you have medical proof, is silly.

The problem with 10 years is you don't want to be spending 7 million + on a 38 year old forward.

A 5 year 7 million deal would make me verrrrrrrryyyyy happy.

You are forgetting about inflation. 10 years from now $7 mil will not be very much money unless you think that the cap is going to keep going down for 10 straight years...

How is Lecavalier's contract legal then?

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=243275&lid...os=topStory_nhl

Lecavalier will earn $10-million per season in salary and bonuses for the first six seasons of the deal, before dropping to $8.5-million in 2016-2017, $4-million in 2017-2018, $1.5-million in 2018-2019 and $1-million and 2019-2020.

Here is my ideal contract for Zetterberg:

15 15 8 4 2 1 1 = $46 million ($6.57m per year cap hit)

Investing a good portion of his first two years will earn him an additional $1m each year in interest, bringing his real contract value to close to $52 million or $7.4 million per year.

Make it as obscene as you want, this is not a cash-strapped organization:

17 17 8.5 .5 .5 .5 .5 = $44.5m ($6.36m cap hit per year)

With interest, that comes out to around the same $52 million in real return over 7 years ($7.4 million per year)

******* awesome if you are right and it is possible

I wouldn't hold my breath on that if I were you...

I know it won't happen, but the poster actually brought up a good scenario. He shouldn't make more than Datsyuk, or at least not much more, because he is similar caliber, add in his back injury-proness, and that should reduce whatever inflation would bring the contract up to. 5 or 6 years also seems reasonable, and it's hard to see him commanding more than the 6.7-7 million 6 years from now, but I could be wrong. Only downside is, with a shorter contract, the salary reductions each year towards the tail end would be less.

EDIT: Someone else made a good point, though. If he's willing to take a huge hit in order to take a 10 year contract, I'm all for it. But 10 years is too long for a normal or large size contract.

It is possible... The maximum year-to-year decrease in salary is 50% of the lower of the year 1 or year 2 salary (not the preceding year).

Article 50.7 of the CBA:

(ii) any decrease in Player Salary and Bonuses from one League Year to another may not exceed 50 percent of the Player Salary and Bonuses of the lower of the first two League Years of the SPC (or, if such amounts are the same, 50 percent of that same amount).

Fine, better to take that than risk another 5 years of uncertainty. Any deal past 5 years is crazy IMO

And how's Dats' contract looking right now? He was signed for 7 years and that's looking like a perfect length.

6.7 million for 5 years is what he deserves, hopefully he won't ask for more.

This statement isn't accurate in the least.

The Wings' brass did not offer that contract. Z publicly stated that he never received that offer and therefore never turned it down.

No worries. BTW, I would be very willing to bet if Z was offered that contract he would've taken it. The only thing that would've likely kept him from signing that deal would be his feelings of perhaps he should take a hit to keep the team competitive. I'm fairly confident that's why Lidstrom, Holmstrom and Stevie have been talking to Z. Basically, its a conversation that starts with, "We've all taken hits, now its your turn. Not to mention you're setting the standard as the likely next captain".

Nowadays a players of Hank's caliber would command $9-10 million a season easy, with some of the more insane GMs around the league. Keeping him for around $7.5 mil a season is a good bargain for his variety of two-way play. Just because he is slumping right now doesn't mean his isn't worth the dough. Unfortunately, in the cap world its risky to sign any player beyond the foreseeable future and sometimes you also have to try and nickel and dime them, trying to convince them to give up a little bit to continue playing with great players. Do not envy management or the players that need signing. No one wants to go, but everyone deserves to get paid.
