Could the wings afford Backstrom next year?

If we don't re-sign, Hudler and Samuellson and of course depending on how he performs rest of season / playoffs and how much his demand is.

I wouldn't want him tho.

I mean back in the days when there was no cap, I use to say to myself that developping a goalie is way to hard, just sign a good goalie in his prime that would save you some problems for a while but now there's a cap ... I'd rather go with Howard next year. Come's cheaper and will finally get to see what his made of.

Just wondering if the wings would have cap room if they dropped hossa, kept franzen, and tried to sign minny's tender Backstrom ( i think he read he's becoming a UFA next year, no?)

Not a chance. The Wings have 47 million tied up for next year and need to sign 10 players.

I'd prefer they go after someone a bit less expensive, maybe a Manny Fernandez. That would be a good quality pickup. If Ozzie doesn't turn it around encourage him to retire or just buy him out. Manny and Ty (hopefully) would be the 1-2. Bring in Larsson every once in a while. Trade Howard.

Not easily. We'd be sacrificing a lot of other players to get him. His current contract was for 2 years, 6.2 million. However, with his performance the past two years, and his UFA status, price is going up.

Although, he hasn't even started contract talks with the Wild yet, per numerous articles in Star Tribune and the Pioneer Press. They're far too concerned with the lingering hope that even though DR isn't exactly saying the nicest things about Gaby to the press and all right now, they still might convince him to stay. Despite the fact that Niklas has said he would like to stay in MN. Yes, DR knows his priorities.

We should keep Conks. He is cheaper and pretty solid.

I agree that Conklin has been solid, but hes not a starter. And he hasnt shown any signs that he has an extra gear in big games, which is key going into the playoffs.

At this point, I do want Backstrom, but hes going to be too expensive. 4M on the open market is completely reasonable, and he could see 5 from an overpaying team. Ideally, the Wings need to look elsewhere.

With the way the goaltending has been this season, it actually might be safe to say that some names like Leclaire, Fernandez, Ellis, Huet, or Khabibulin could be useful to the Wings. But our rivals aren't going to trade with us, and the other guys are too expensive right now. Kari Lehtonen could be a trade option, and he could probably be signed to a 3M per year contract, but that still might be too much money (4.4M total) put into goaltending.

And the Wings won't trade, waive, or buy out Osgood.

Another soft swede? nah

If you're asking if we could afford Backstrom, then apparently you have not read one news story regarding our own free agents situation.

It's not that big of a problem. If Hossa wants too much money, let him leave. Getting rid of a few players (Flipulla and Kronwall) could easily clear enough cap room to sign Hudler, Franzen, Conklin and Backstrom. Replace the rest of the positions with 700k rookies. The Red Wings have a D problem, and a goalie problem, getting 1 good goalie is a lot easier then waiting for 6 mediocre D-men to get healthy. One player can ruin the whole party, so get rid of them. Past performance should be meaningless when a team is playing this bad. And don't kid yourself, the Wings are playing terrible.

Our record is only good because of offense. And look at today, all that offense, and boom 4-2 loss. You think the Wings will be scoring 3,4,5 goals a game in the play-offs? Not a chance, other teams will just lock us down. And seeing how easy it is to shut Hossa and Zetterberg down these days, we should make a major move to get a goalie. Ozzy won't recover, and even if the D does, we won't make it past the second round. The D can't be improved anymore, we are paying those 6 guys an insane amount of money. What we have is what we have, except in the goalie department.
