betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 Remeber last February? Wings did ok in that s***storm. I wouldn't say they did OK. I mean, yes, the season turned out OK. February was awful though, and it culminated in a lot of no-account stupidity round these parts when the trade deadline hit.
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 Im not a Kopecky lover by any means but he could skate circles around Aaron Downey. In the past the Wings have had tough guys who can skate and not be a liability on the ice. Im not sure there is a player in the Wings organization like that right now. Im also not saying Kopecky should be in there at all, just trying to figure out why Downey cant stick with this team. Kopecky may be able to skate circles around Downey - but it would take him about an hour. He'd fall down at every turn. Another reason why Kopecky's size is completely useless. You're a lot shorter than 6'3 with your ass on the ice, but thats another story.
Mike 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 This is in no way a slap at Downey. I just think the Wings are trying to see how the young kids play so that they have an idea of what they want to do with contracts and possible trades. I have no idea what the Wings see in Kopecky because he is flat out awful. Hopefully he will part ways with the team and Downey gets his roster spot. I'm looking forward to see Abdelkader play. I think he has a bight future with this team. Also, I am interested in seeing Leino play. If he has a strong showing, I would consider trading Filpula and pluging Leino into his spot. The injuries are really starting to take their toll. It seems that Z is no longer missing games as a precautionary measure, but because his back is really acting up. I hope I am wrong on that one though. Hopefully Hudler can skate up and get some decent ice time on the second line.
thedatsyukian 7 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 Great move. Abdelkader is a fantastic energy with more offensive upside than any of the guys we have. He'll be up with the club on a more permanent basis soon enough.
ltgator333 3 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 Good. I've been waiting for this to happen for a while now. Abdelkader and Helm are awesome and could be on our 3rd line right now.
stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 just to add to the thread, Abs can fight better than anyone on our current roster (keep in mind, this being after Downey is sent down) with the exception of maybe the surprising ability Lilja's shown this year... so that's always a distinct possibility too
jvxp 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 Honestly I dont know what the f*** is going on with this team. Lets send down the guy who had the only energy on the ice last night, but make sure Tomas "I'm the most useless player on the Red Wings roster since Boyd Devereux" Kopecky keeps his permanent roster spot? You know what's even sadder? Devereux was better than Kopecky. Go ahead and try to deny it. I agree. What the hell are they doing?
Vladifan 680 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 Hahaha..Boyd the Void?? Wow. You're right. I'm trying to come up with an argument, but I really...I'm speechless. Boyd Devereaux is actually better than Kopecky. As a side note, I was thinking about it last night, and does anyone else think we might be showcasing some folks here? I sure as hell hope we aren't showcasing Abdelkader, but with the amount of ice that Kopecky and Filppula saw last night makes me think Holland has some bigger deals in mind than Cory Cross this deadline. eeeohhh gawd, I hope you're right. At the moment, Flipzeedoo is driving me battier than Kopecky, but we each have our little hates, don't we??!!
GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 Nice move by the team. The guy plays his heart out for 1 game, showing the kind of energy we haven't seen all year, and they send him down as a reward for his play. I know Abdelkalder has more talent, but the 4th line isn't there to score goals, it's there to stir s*** up.

GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 Have you ever thought he is switching guys around just to see what they can do? What can Abdelkalder do that no one else on this team can? For Downey to only get one game makes it pretty pointless to have ever brought him up from the minors, especially since he played really well.

Yzersyukstromberg 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 My thoughts on Downey are simple...yes he has good energy...but unfortunately, that's all he has. He has zero skill. The Wings are much better off bringing up young, hungry guys like Abdelkader and even Leino...both of these guys (especially Abdelkader) will bring lots of energy to the lineup and will actually be able to contribute something to the team offensively as well. In today's NHL, there's just no room for a guy like Downey, who eats up maybe 4 1/2 minutes of ice time, skating everywhere but near the puck, looking for hits. It's nice to have some grit in the lineup, but with Downey, it essentially eliminates our fourth line from doing anything offensively. Kopecky is useless as well, but I'll save that for another day and another thread.
DyingAlive 27 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 Well, I guess we are getting a nice variety of looks at our prospects now. While I love having Downey up, it's not a bad thing having Abs up in the long run.

Oh right, I forgot we're just special in ways that no one else is. You've probably been watching too much KHL lately and got it confused with the NHL. There's plenty of room for guys like Downey as is evidenced by what everyone else is doing.

Kopecky, Draper, and Maltby have 8, 7, and 7 points respectively and are collectively -15 in 140 combined games ... exactly what offensive contribution by our 4th line is Downey eliminating? None, but people love talking about how there's no room for guys like Downey in today's league, without realizing that the league is full of guys like Downey. It just escapes their thinking at that moment, and unfortunately we have to keep hearing that line over and over again.

It just escapes their thinking at that moment, and unfortunately we have to keep hearing that line over and over again. Especially on a team like ours which is DEEP with offensive talent. Hell, we could probably go without a 4th line altogether and still win games. But OMFG we can't spare 1 single roster spot for a guy that makes everyone play tougher! I feel better now. esteef
talex 1 Report post Posted January 30, 2009 If its not because Helm is injured, like egroen said, then its probably because Helm is a known commodity. The Wings know they have an NHL ready guy in Helm. They need to see how Abdelkader and Leino have developed so far this season and how its affected their play at the NHL level. Agreed. This also may have something to do with the recent Zetterberg signing, Holland said he planned on having another player wrapped up before the playoffs (Most would assume Hossa or Franzen) and this may be a chance to see who they feel is ready in order to make a decision there.
