Shaman 713 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 (edited) Bob McKenzie actually reported it to be likely. Not wiki. Just thought it was funny that an over zealous Calgary fan has already edited it to reflect a trade that hasnt happened quite yet. Elshupacabra 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 (edited) Trade: To Calgary: Jordan Leopold To Colorado Avalanche: Lawrence Nycholat , prospect Ryan Wilson and a 2nd round Montreal draft pick (previously acquired). Doggy 130 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 It certainly does-- players on LTIR don't count against the cap while they are on it. *sigh* It's staggering how much this is misunderstood. From the CBA: All Player Salary and Bonuses paid to Players on an NHL Active Roster, Injured Reserve or Non Roster that are Unfit to Play – being either injured or suffering from an illness – shall be counted against a Club's Upper Limit, Actual Club Salary and Averaged Club Salary, as well as against the Players' Share. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 Official now. Good trade, Leopold is a good defenceman, and Calgary needed someone like him. (I hope this isnt the last Colorado player moving today, Lappy!!)

seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 It certainly does-- players on LTIR don't count against the cap while they are on it. Like Doggy said, it still counts against the cap, but you're allowed to exceed the cap by that much while they're on LTIR. You accumulate absolutely zero cap space with players on LTIR. The only way the Wings can make a move that big with Homer and Stuart on LTIR is if they stay out until the playoffs.
Doggy 130 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 So does this mean Jokinen to Calgary is pretty much bogus?

Well then how, pray tell, did the Wings manage to bring up Leino, Ericsson, Helm, etc. when Stuart went down? They basically said "we are saving cap space" with the injuries and they brought them up. FinRedWing 172 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 For sure. He deserves it though. I see him being an absolute beast in the playoffs. 780 games and counting. I actually wanted him to play like 4-5 more seasons without a single playoff game, really set a record that would be hard to break. But I guess old Pumpkin Head's going to the playoffs. Exactly. The ONLY way to gain cap space from LTIR is to have a player that is out for the rest of the regular season.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 So does this mean Jokinen to Calgary is pretty much bogus? They still have room, so I wouldnt rule it out, but I think someone will have something better to offer then Calgary.
Third Man In 2,091 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 Leopold gives the Flames some really nice depth on defence. If they do add Jokinen as well, they definitely are a better team now.

I wouldnt count on it, I dont see the yotes parting with Jokinen cheap, probably a 2nd or 3rd liner+a pick

NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 It certainly does-- players on LTIR don't count against the cap while they are on it. Actually, yes they do. However, teams are allowed to replace their salary while the player is on LTIR.
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 Detroit doesn't save cap space from LTIR, like others have said. But by not bringing up youngsters earlier in the season who had two-way contracts (paying them an NHL salary if they're playing in the NHL, and a different, lesser salary if they're playing in the AHL), they did save money. Thats where the money saving measure came from - not LTIR.

Doggy 130 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 The Leopold trade takes just under $400k from the Flames $1.1m space. I believe Jokinen will cost them about $1.3 give or take. Am I correct? They need to lose half a mil.
