Brodeur passes Patrick Roy

does anyone else think that marty's tying of the record ought to be ... reevaluated? roy never played in the shootout era, whereas brodeur played in games where a victor came out every night.

don't get me wrong, i love marty, but it feels a little inaccurate.

It's been mentioned already. Wah has 29 more regulation wins but Marty will smash that too. It's not ridiculous to suggest Marty will get 700 wins.

Yeah, because Brodeur playing in the shootout era is TOTALLY his fault.

Fine, we'll reevaluate it. Brodeur has won 27 shootouts in his career. He will play at least one more season. Only in his rookie season, the lockout-shortened 94-95 season, and his injury-shortened year this year did Brodeur win fewer than 30 games in a season. So Brodeur may not have passed Roy in that particular game...but he would still pass Roy as he will likely play at least two or three more seasons and put his records well out of reach for any current veteran goaltender; unless Chris Osgood somehow manages to play at last season's level for another ten-plus seasons.

And Sawchuck basically played w/o pads, by todays standards, and Brodeur will pass him in shutouts too.

The game changes but when Brodeur breaks both records they will be very much valid.

what tragedy occurred in your life to cause you to be so aggressive?

if you paid attention to what i said, you would've gathered that i meant no disrespect to one of my favourite players ever. just an observation, but the other responses seemed to answer my doubts.

Important to note that somewhere around 240 of his 550+ wins were in 1 goal games!

So yeah, the Devils employed a system and yes, they had some fine defenders, but conversely, that system did not allow for alot of goal scoring night in and night out. That's a hell of alot of pressure-packed, 1 goal games to win in your career.

Kudos to him. Never been a big fan of goalies, but by God its nice to see somebody displace Roy. Could never stand that f*****.

Marty cutting the net off the pipes was hilareous!

The tie wraps blocking him from completely cutting it off was even funnier.

Good for Marty. Nice to see Roy no longer holds the record. Of course, he'll probably also sweep up Terry Sawchuk's shutout record, but oh well....Brodeur's a helluva goalie and deserves recognition for it.

And speaking of which. If this were any other sport ESPN would have it splashed all over the front page in big LOOK AT ME graphics. Instead it's relegated to just below the lead story, which is an event ESPN just happens to cover. Which is more than some of the other sites can say - Fox Sports has it as just another headline. I hate to say it because it feels like whoring out to ESPN but fact is, if ESPN doesn't call it important, it's not important to a lot of people. If ESPN were broadcasting hockey you bet your ass Brodeur might actually bump Brett Favre off the front page for an evening.

I think it's just the hatred Roy gets with the heated rivarly we had in the past. That or people think he's a douchebag of a person (which he could be, I'm not the one to say he is though - I've never met the guy). But one thing for sure is what an amazing goalie Roy really was. You can't look past that. Back when I first got into Hockey, I was about 6 at the time, and got into it the year Colorado eliminated us in '96, I did not like the guy AT ALL because he was so good... but I loved the Avalanche still.

Enough about Roy though, this is about Marty. Congratulations to Broduer for passing him, of course. He's one hell of a magnificent goalie, and deserves all the recognition he gets. With the 3-4 years he has left in his tank, this is going to be one hell of a record to break. He'll of course beat Terry Sawchucks, which is going to be another great record, but just imagine what that's going to be as well.

Congratulations Broduer on passing Roy.

I thought Roy's Party was better then Broduers was sorry after they won.......The First time was great to watch but then when Broduer passed Roy it was not that great, the NHL is so Watered Down now that anything anyone does it's not that exciting anymore sorry....NHL Hockey Games used to be great.....But now there not....I want the Game back to the way it was in the 90's......

Congratulations Broduer and hope you make it to 600 Wins and set a whole NEW......Record.......................................
