The defence corps for the Montreal Canadiens took a major hit Monday, as TSN learned that the Habs will be without leading scorer Andrei Markov for three weeks and Mathieu Schneider's season is over.

Both players underwent x-rays and MRI's earlier in the day after being injured during Saturday's victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team has yet to reveal the nature of either's injuries.

RDS is reporting that Schneider will likely have to undergo season-ending surgery while Markov would likely return by the end of the month.

It would be a major hit for a Montreal team that has suddenly rounded into form after struggling earlier in the year. Markov, who suffered the injury in the third period Saturday when he was drilled by Leafs' forward Mikhail Grabovski, leads the team with 64 points, while Schneider was the Habs big acquisition prior to the NHL trade deadline.

The Candiens face the Senators Monday night in search of their fourth straight victory. The team currently sit seventh in the Eatern Conference, three points ahead of the New York Rangers and Florida Panthers. Montreal is also just one point back of idle Pittsburgh for the East's sixth spot.

So much for that 100 year season :P

Sucks for them, but we'll see how much damage they can do in the playoffs against the Caps or Devils.

I still think they'll make the postseason, but it'll be a quick 4 (5 if they're lucky) game series.

Interesting Sidenote: If the Habs don't make the playoffs (or don't win the Cup for that matter), it'll be the first decade since Montreal's inception that they don't have a championship to their name.

xxx1 is the first year of a decade/century/millenium, not xxx0. The Habs have one more chance to win it this decade next season.

How can a season ending injury turn into "i'll play tonight" ? Did the doctors mix up his MRI/Xray with someone elses? :P

It said season ending surgery. I guess he is going to try and play through the pain. Didn't he have a shoulder injury during the Wings 07 run? Is this the same shoulder?

If that's the case then schneids is proper hardcore :D didn't think he was the guy who would play through massive pain.. i guess painkillers and certain injections will remove most of the pain though...

You have to wonder to what degree of usefullness he'll be at this point. And to what end.

Even if they do creep into the playoffs in the place they're in now (seventh), Washington will blitz them. If they drop to eighth, I don't like their chances any better against Boston.
