Red Wings 09-10 Salary Cap Calculator

The Wings only have 4 million in cap space if you don't move anyone currently signed, or sign any of the UFA's. Someone has got to go, and I hope it's not Flipulla.

With the emergence of Ericsson and still having lilja signed for one more year makes Stuart expendable at his salary.

what an awesome tool!

I still don't see HOW they re-sign Hossa, even if you let other guys walk and make a trade, he'd have to come in at under a 5.5 cap hit AND we'd be right up against the ceiling again...

This is what I think they best/most viable roster is - Trade Lebda, re-sign Hudler, let Sammy, Conklin, Chelios and sadly, Hossa, walk and bring up Howard and obviously Ericsson, full time

no... it doesn't.

The Wings don't handle NTC's like the Maple Leafs. Enough of the "trade Stuart" talk on here, it's not possible and it's getting old.

Yeah, but he, Rafalski and Cleary have no-trade clauses in their contracts.

History has clearly shown that NTC's dont always stop trades from happening. They just let the player choose their destination.

Your roster only has 20 players, 11 forwards and less than 300,000 in cap space lefts for injuries and such. Thats not a viable option.

You will need to dress another forward and defenseman (only 11 forwards and 7 defense on the roster).

You mean the Leafs weren't a contender? :hehe: Seriously though how many teams have the depth and potential salary cap issues we have? Im just saying if the right situation came up for Stuart to go back to soCal I wouldn't at all be surprised if it happened.

Also with Ericsson up next year as a permanent fixture, he is going to get top 4 minutes. With Lids, Raf and Kronner ahead of him where does that leave Stuart? As a 3.75m 5th defenseman on a team with cap troubles? I just don't see it.

I'd be sad to see Conks go but the bottom line is that eventually the Wings have to bring up one of the goalies that are stashed in GR. I was a huge Howard fan when we got him but i may be an even bigger fan of Jordan Pearce having watched him in college the last 2 years, this kid is the real deal, and then there's always Larsson. The Wings for the last decade have just been buying goaltending help off the market, but this is no longer an option for 2 reasons: 1. we have cap problems as it is just keeping most of our team together as it is and 2. The current goaltending cycle is the NHL is down, for the last 10-12 years there was a golden age of goaltending with Roy, Brodeur, Hasek, Joseph, Belfour, Vernon, Osgood, Khabibulin, etc. now those guys are either retired or on their way out and there is a wave of teams bringing in fresh blood (Hiller, Mason, Rinne, Price,) and a young set of goalies just starting to enter their prime (Ward, Fleury, Miller, Lundqvist) The time has come for the Wings to start doing the same if they want solid goaltending in the long run.

Trade Filppula, Stuart (yes, I'm aware of the NTC, but this is hypothetical), and Lebda for picks and prospects since we cannot afford to take on more salary. Re-sign Hossa, Hudler, Leino, Kopecky, and Downey (he can be kept in GR, even though I would love to see him in Detroit full-time). Let Samuelsson, McCarty, Chelios, and Conklin go. Still, this really cuts it close. Good luck Kenny!

I think we all agree Holland is spending too much on D. Ericcson could easily replace Stuart. Hesitant to move Kronwall since he was in 10 top D scoring. It all depends what Nick wants to do. If he does retire, Rafa becomes 10x more valuable, but if Lidstrom comes back cheap could get rid of Rafalski if he waives his NTC. Getting rid of Stuart only frees up a total of 7 million, so probably no Hossa. Flipulla is too valueble to let go, same with Hudler. Rafalski would free up 6 million right their, yes Hossa, Hudler and Leino. We got the D, and could stand to lose any one. Replacing lilja with Erricson isn't a solution, you need to replace a top 4 guy with Ericcson to gain anything.

If the Wings are to re-sign Hossa with a $6m cap hit, as well as signing Hudler, Kopecky, and Leino and promoting Helm, Leino, Ericsson, and Howard, then the ideal move is, unfortunately, for Cleary and Stuart to waive their NTCs. This allows the Wings to avoid trading Filppula or Kronwall; the only significant player lost is Samuelsson, who walks as UFA along with Chelios and Conklin.

Good luck getting anyone to waive NTC's. Which is why Hossa will NOT be coming back. I've been saying this for months, its mathematically possible, but realistically not feasible.

Yep, because Hossa will not be coming back if the Wings try to trade players who have NTCs, or (as stated in another thread) Hossa will not be coming back if the Wings trade key young players that they drafted and are developing.

Makes it difficult for Mr. Holland to clear cap space to keep Hossa.

we can get rid of stuart and filpulla and there will be plenty of room. we still have young leino coming up so he will replace filpulla and hudler will play center more. we have ericsson coming up too so it is fine. also when nickolas liddy retires there will be plenty of room for new people so really there is more space than it looks

Hmmmm this is really tough now... this idea is probably not what's going to happen, but have a look :P

If the cap goes up by 1 or 2 million like Bettman estimates (http://sports.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20090424.wsptduha0424/GSStory/GlobeSports/home?cid=al_gam_mostview) then it would save us. We could then sign Hossa for 6 million and some others. Let's just say that Hudler signs for 2 million (unlikely), Stuart gets traded to LA, Filppula is traded for draft picks and prospects, we bring up Howard, sign Leino and another cheap forward (Haydar, anyone?)

If the cap doesn't go up, then maybe Hudler signs for 1.7 (or get another forward from FA) and Hossa for 5.8. I'm dreaming, but w/e.

We could have something like:

Holmstrom-Datsyuk-Hossa

Hudler-Zetterberg-Franzen

Cleary-Draper-Maltby

Leino-Haydar-Helm

Lidstrom-Rafalski

Kronwall-Ericsson

Lebda-Lilja (try Ericsson Kindl and we have an all GR line if we play them on the fourth line)

Meech

Kindl

Osgood

Howard

If the NHLPA opts to increase the cap by the 5% they can, that would be just over $2.8m. Furthermore, in my scenario, that would allow Stuart alone to be traded instead and Cleary would not have to be traded.
