Guest Shoreline Report post Posted April 30, 2009 I'm kinda weirded by that, but congrats to him. That being said, either Zednik or Sullivan will win, and I'm placing my bets on Sullivan.

Jarret_G 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2009 sullivan: amazing comeback after a 2 year battle with a back injury zednik: great comeback after a very dangerous and frightening on-ice injury chelios: ...uh....you're old. He also broke his leg at the start of the year and came back from that. That's a great accomplishment for anyone, let alone a 47 year old. Most guys would have been like "ahh well, i'm 47 and have a broken leg, might as well hang em up now"
Mors 201 Report post Posted April 30, 2009 By the numbers Chelios deserves it... "Chelios, 47, is being honored as much for his durability and high level of play over 25 seasons as for his return from injury. His teams have made the playoffs in 24 of his 25 seasons. He is the oldest player in the NHL. Chelios won three Stanley Cups, with Montreal in 1986 and with Detroit in 2002 and 2008. He played in 11 NHL All-Star Games and won the Norris Trophy in 1989, 1993 and 1996. He was twice runner-up for the Norris. That means he was the NHL's best or second-best defenseman in 20 percent of his seasons. Chelios has 185 goals and 763 assists in 1,644 NHL games. He is plus-352 in his career and had only three negative seasons. Afraid of no one, he has logged 2,891 penalty minutes. He has scored 69 power-play goals, 13 short-handed goals and 31 game-winners. Chelios has been a superior Stanley Cup Playoffs performer with 31 goals and 113 assists in 260 games. Chelios ranks fourth all-time in games played and is the leader among defensemen, Americans and active players. He is the only player in NHL history to play more than 400 games with three different teams, Montreal, Chicago and Detroit. He set the NHL record by playing in his 880th victory on Jan. 6 and extended that mark to 894 wins."
Chunkylover 26 Report post Posted April 30, 2009 By the numbers Chelios deserves it... That's interesting, but is it really based on career success? I think Sullivan should get it because the time off was greater than Zednik yet he contributed immensely when he returned.
wingslionstigers 12 Report post Posted April 30, 2009 Cheli is 47 years old. I don't think you will ever see anyone play at that age. I know people have done it in the past but look how competitive the NHL is now days, i don't think you will ever see anybody play at his age ever again. Yeah, tough pull. Not to mention last year when he was up against colitis guy and cancer guy. Hopefully, they make it a career achievement/last chance kind of thing. Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted April 30, 2009 Well, this year Chelios has 47 and coming back from a broken leg going for him. We'll see how that goes.
egroen 384 Report post Posted April 30, 2009 I think Chelios deserves this one - to come back from an injury at his age had nothing to do with money, lifestyle or unfinished goals. The guy literally loves playing hockey and will do anything he can to keep playing. I think he had ten times as many reasons as Sullivan and Zednik to hang 'em up. I know people have done it in the past but look how competitive the NHL is now days, i don't think you will ever see anybody play at his age ever again. With advancements in training and sports medicine, I think you will. The thing is, even if you're playing at 47, there's no way you're playing at your highest level. Most first-ballot HOF guys hang 'em up when they can't be a star anymore, but Cheli is dedicated to the game to the point where he doesn't mind being a healthy scratch most of the time, as long as he still gets to play sometimes. He has the Cups, Norrises, HOF assurred, there's nothing left to be accomplished. He has enough money, he has Cheli's, he could EASILY just retire and be an MSU hockey dad, so post-career's not an issue like it is with a lot of guys. Yet he perseveres, because he loves the game. That should be what the Masterson's about, not who came back from the worst injury. Edited April 30, 2009 by C-TownWing

I think Sullivan should get it because the time off was greater than Zednik yet he contributed immensely when he returned. I believe other previous winners have won based on things that happened earlier in their careers, sometimes it takes awhile to acknowledge a contribution to the sport. Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted April 30, 2009 Well, here's one of the Masterton finalists and his devotion to the NHL: http://www.rds.ca/hockey/chroniques/273897.html (Basically, Zednik signed with Yaroslavl) So yea, knowing that the voting is already done, it's gonna be all if he has more votes than Cheli, who truly HAS shown devotion. selkie 10 Report post Posted April 30, 2009 My guess is that Zednik get is since the award seems to have morphed into 'returned to play after an impressive near-death experience' deal in recent years.

Opie 308 Report post Posted April 30, 2009 One should not forget what Cheli has done for the Players Association, he has been the public face for many a nasty situation, willingly. Putting his name and his face on stances like the former head of the union. Cheli is no longer about stats, he is about love for the game and I can not knock him for that, I would love to be doing what he is doing at age 47, hell right now at age 32. However, with what happened to Zednik last year I have a hard time not giving it to him, that was enough to make some one else quit, let alone himself. That was Marlachuk part 2, I still cannot believe that man skated from the goal line to his bench (long change if I remember correctly too). Only to collapse at the bench, there were reports that skating to the bench (and the training putting pressure on the wound) saved his life. Much like Jiri Fischer quick thinking and top notch people and equipment on hand saved his life.

No one can question his dedication to the sport. Not only did he have to fight to return from an injury, but he fight against age, a deep roster, lots of collateral responsibilities.... Zednik's injury was graphic and recent and may stick in most voters' minds. Sullivan's injury was probably the toughest to return from. Yeah, tough pull. Not to mention last year when he was up against colitis guy and cancer guy. Hopefully, they make it a career achievement/last chance kind of thing. I don't agree with this logic. Leetch got the Norris instead of Konstantinov because he was near the end of his career and Vladdy would have plenty of other opportunities to be nominated. Yeah, that one didn't work out so well for Vlad, did it? I probably didn't articulate that well--I just mean that I hope that they get away from the "who came back from the worst disease/injury" logic. If they give it to Cheli as a last chance sort of thing, I won't complain, although I don't agree with that logic in general, only when it favors a guy I like! I'd love to see the Wings take every trophy they are capable of earning: Stanley Cup, Conn Smythe, Hart, Norris, Selke, Byng, Masterton... any others? On the Red Wings, and only the Red Wings, is it a requirement for you to get 1st in the NHL to be a finalist for the Adams, and that's just to be a finalist. My grandma could coach the Red Wings to a Cup. She could also play goalie/forward/defense and post numbers like Osgood/Datsyuk/Lidstrom.
