Do you re-sign Marian Hossa?

I love Hossa. I love his snap and release. I love how clutch he's been for this team. And yeah, he has his dry spots - but he's a great hockey player, through and through. His chemistry with this team is undeniable, in my opinion.

I would do what it took to keep him as long as he would be willing to drop down his price tag. We don't have the cap space to give him what he could get elsewhere, but if he'd be willing to take a couple million less - then I'd say sure, sign him up.

It really all depends on what the lowest he'd take is.

Question is would signing #81 (if he wants to sign here) hurt us for when we need to go goalie or defensemen shopping in a few years?

Not so much for a defenseman because when we go "defenseman shopping" Lidstrom and his $7.45M cap hit will more than likely be gone.

Yet, the cap is suppose to drop a lot in the next few yrs also so that money will not be available then.

Time to win when we can before the Wings have to tighten their belts.

THIS is the concern. Glad to see someone isn't reducing this thread to OMG HOSSA HATERZ vs the pro-Hossa group.

I'll trust in Mr. Holland and Mr. Yzerman to make the RIGHT choice on this matter. Hossa is a great talent, he's sharp at both ends of the ice. On the other hand, the Wings won the 08 Cup without him and WITH Samuelsson and Hudler.

Really it's a win-win proposition

I'm sure it has nothing to do with tying up 23+ million in 4 forwards til kingdom come...

I think that the 'cap pie' can be divided up better for a more balanced team, rather than front loading all that cash on forwards.

When Lids is gone (maybe one more year) an investment in defence may be worthwhile.

I agree.

I just pray it won't go down too much, even though it's inevitable.

There have also been some grim cap projections for the 10/11 season, too. Grim as in ~40M. Like RivalRed said, the money that comes off the books when Lidstrom's contract is up may not even be there to begin with. It may just be that the Wings have to use that 7.45M in cap space to become cap compliant, and not add a single defenseman - other than youngsters - to "replace" Lidstrom.

With an aging Lidstrom, Osgood, and even Rafalski, signing Hossa just seems like overkill. Would it be awesome to have that core of forwards? Of course. But it would also be nice to keep have a Stanley Cup contending roster year after year too.

Do people honestly think he'll demand to come back at 7M?

Maybe not 7M, but I cant imagine him taking less than 6M. And definitely not 5M. And if it is a 5M cap hit, its likely to be a 5+ year deal, and then the issue of having 22M tied up in 4 forwards for the next 5 years becomes huge, as 22M could be 50+% of the cap allowance in just 2 years.

See, I can imagine him taking just under 6. Which, yeah, would still be a big hit. But when people start talking about hindering the Wings' ability to compete for the Cup...well, that's when I start chuckling.

You start chuckling, and other people start thinking about the cap ceiling in 2 years.

This isn't about Hossa's contract now - its clear that hes an asset in this playoff run - but his next contract may have largely unintended, yet negative, consequences.

You're looking too short term. I like Hossa, I don't have the apparent man-crush on him like you do, but I think he is an exceptional talent. Even if he signed for a 5 mil cap season, we still couldn't afford it without removing 2-5 roster players, and that's already taking in account Leino, Helm, Ericsson replacing guys on the roster.

If you want some hilarity, I recall a handful of posters suggesting Lids would take 4m a season for such a salary.

YG, I don't think spelling it out is going to work at all. Stubborn is something we all are around here.

To be fair, Lids did say he'd play for the league minimum if Holland and Co. asked him to.
