Kwame_Kilpatrick 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2009 if u are judging hossa on the playoffs look at datsyuk... not exactly a fair argument. also he has looked deadly, just hasnt found a good line partner to work with
TheOwl 77 Report post Posted May 12, 2009 The simple fact is, even if you let Sammy, Hulder, Conklin, Chelios and Kopetky all leave, and replace them with Albekater, Ericcson, Helm, Leino and Howard, you gain almost no cap room. The 5 former players almost make the minimum, and you basically replace them with 5 guys making the minimum. Unless Hossa signs for under 3 million, you can't keep him unless you trade a guy with a significant cap hit. Stuart or Kronwall or Rafalski would have to be traded. Or Flipulla, or Cleary. The way Flipulla is improving it would be a huge mistake letting him go. Leino is basically a first round draft pick, no point in letting him go. Their is no cap room for Hossa. Now, perhaps, in a perfect world Hossa would sign a 1 year deal for like 2 million a season, wait for Lidstrom to retire or sign for less the following season, then give Hossa a long term, 5 million a season. But then you totally screw yourself if the cap decreases.
joshy207 156 Report post Posted May 12, 2009 I think they have to let him go. They wouldn't have to totally gut the team to keep him, but there'd definitely be some filleting. As good as Hossa is, it's not worth it IMO.
xBrave_Heartx 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2009 i dont care if he leaves. Val - Dats - Homer Hudler - Zette - Franzen Cleary - Helm - Sammy Malts - Drapes - Kops that looks fine to me. and we still have THE best defense in the game.. Val is gaining his confidence, Hudler finally gets top 6 minutes.. our bottom 2 lines are hard hats.. we're good to go
Zeke 5 Report post Posted May 14, 2009 Hossa is a great addition to the team! Not attempting to sign Hossa again would be a huge mistake. He has two huge goals the other night in Game 4 and played a huge role in Game 5. Hossa makes this team that much more leathal! Not signing Hossa would be a bigger mistake than letting Rossie O'Donnell get free in an all you can eat buffet. Hossa is key element to the Red Wings and why they will repeat this year! Do you still feel that way after watching his performance in game 6? He looked pretty good on the 4th line with Sammy and Abdelkader, but not sure if we should invest 7 mill on a checking 4th liner. NHLrules? 32 Report post Posted May 14, 2009 I said this in another thread. No. Hossa is a great player, one of the best in the world. I really like him alot. That being said, he only makes this team marginally better. You would think we would have run away with the pres trophy and would easily be coasting to another cup with him on this team. That is not happening. I would rather have two players like Dallas Drake or Clowe than Hossa, on this team. We need a guy like that more than a super star type player. Well said we already have 3 superstar forwards we could do with some other pieces to the puzzle. They would also come cheaper too those guys that play with heart often come cheap. Zeke 5 Report post Posted May 14, 2009 Game 4 2 goals +2 Shooting percentage: 33.3% Only 16:27 TOI Didn't Hossa win the overall playoff scoring race last year with the Pens? I would be happy with half that production this year.
wingsdiehard13 33 Report post Posted May 14, 2009 Didn't Hossa win the overall playoff scoring race last year with the Pens? I would be happy with half that production this year. No. Zetterberg did. I don't think you would be thrilled with 13 points by Hossa for an entire Stanley Cup run.
WorkingOvertime 536 Report post Posted May 14, 2009 No. I have loved having Hossa on the team this year, but I am uncomfertable tying up so much money over the next few years in so few players. I would rather the team have more money to be flexible in the coming years to resign younger players, pick up veterans (Drake, Hossa, etc), and make other moves. Hossa is a great player, but even without him we have a lot of offensive power. Next year I would like to see ZDH Hudler Flip Franzen Lieno Draper Cleary Abdelkader Helm Maltby/Kope/Fighter

If we sign him for 7 more, they will be on the downside ,and tie up a lot of cap room.

If he's at the height of his career and not a factor in our biggest game, please explain why we want him for the next 7 to 8 years, and mess up our cap long term?
