Smartest thing he can do is to sign über hometown discount 1year deals until his body says STOP.... for the franchise's sake

He's got plenty, but I think that playing two LONG post-season back to back like this is quickly emptying what's left in the tank for him.

Don't be fooled, there's not any direct Nick Lidstrom replacements out there. Period.

If I were a betting man, my dollar would be on he plays out his contract and retires gracefully. His #'s a lock for the rafters and he's a lock for the HoF (even with half the credentials he currently has). I don't see what more a player in his position could possibly want. Maybe another gold medal?

I think Lids could play for many years to come. His role would deminish over time leading to the once great Lidstrom being benched in the playoffs and fans would call for him to retire instead of taking up a spot for a youngster. By doing this I think he lessenes his own career. I think after his current contract is up, he either signs 1 one year contract for much less money, or reites and works in the front office for the Redwings or a team in Sweden.

I just hope he doesn't pull a Chelios and goes out on top at the right time.

The "right time" is when you don't have your heart in it and/or someone's not willing to pay you to fill a roster spot. Cheli, Nick or anyone else doesn't owe it to you to retire while still at the level of a top 2 or whatever the arbitrary standard is there.

I'm in the "scared to death" club. Minus Nick, the Wings are just another good team (on the ice). He's not hurt often, but when he has been, we've seen glimpses of life without him, and it ain't pretty.

The good news is that I don't think it'll happen at the end of this contract. I see him signing short deals for less money and just taking things year to year. I think we still have him for another 3-4 years.

Chelios is in the top 10 standard, and he owes it to his team to retire at the right time. He is two years overdue. Maybe one.
