DatsMyWings13 4 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 (edited) Did anyone else catch this article on the Freep website: Article According to Sharks forward Jeremy Roenick -- who, please remember, was eliminated from the playoffs in round one -- Wings coach Mike Babcock dislikes Americans, and Chris Chelios in particular. That was what Roenick told Mike North & Dan Jiggetts this morning on “The Monsters in the Morning†show on Comcast Sportsnet in Chicago. • Roenick, on why Chelios isn’t playing: “The coach just doesn’t like him for some ungodly known reason, I think he’s got a grudge against American players, but he does not like Cheli at all.†• Roenick, on issues between Chelios and Babcock: “There is an underlying, I don’t know if it’s a hatred, because hatred is a strong word. But there is some underlying issue there that I don’t understand. You know Babcock is the coach. You have to respect him for his decisions on who he plays, and that is all well and good. Sometimes it’s just the verbal stuff that goes back and forth, from what I understand. Cheli will never complain. He is the ultimate professional. He will do whatever the team needs.†• Roenick, on the treatment of Chelios from Babcock: “If you’d know some of the things that Babcock says to Chris Chelios, it would make your stomach churn. Just total disrespect for not even just one of the best Americans, but one of the best defensemen to ever play the game. The way he is talked to is just unacceptable. I wish I could elaborate, but that’s not proper. It’s just disrespectful.†I asked Chelios about the comments, and he laughed and laughed. “How does JR know anything -- is he playing?†Chelios said. “The last time I talked to JR was a few weeks ago, and it was about his charity pool party in Vegas. I don’t know what JR is talking about.†Why must he run his mouth? Does anyone else think that Babcock hates Chelios? Chelios has looked like a liabilty in these playoffs and that is why he's not playing. I can't picture Babcock being disrespectful to Chelios. Captain_Yzerman19 1 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 (edited) lol... Cheli is not playing because we have better players that can produce more. What a jackass. Oh, hey JR... you win that ring yet? No? Edited May 21, 2009 by Captain_Yzerman19

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 Reasons to believe Roenick: He's close friends with Chelios and would know. Reasons not to believe Roenick: It doesn't make any sense. When have we ever seen anything to seem like he hates Americans? Or Chelios especially? I think Chelios could be playing full time on another team, but clearly we're too deep, which is why he's not playing. I'm a big fan of Cheli's but I just don't see this making sense. Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted May 21, 2009 Did you get that from Avery's shrink?! esteef From what I understand Roenick has always been a yapper and sort of a s*** stirrer. If Chelios shrugged it off so nonchalantly, my guess is it's either true and Cheli is doing his part to diffuse the situation, or Roenick is just making it up. And if he is making it up, my bet would be that it isn't for any devious reason rather he's doing it as a joke or something on Cheli. Roenick says alot without thinking. Some people are like that. I for one like JR. He's not much now but back in the day he played the game how it was supposed to be played, high tempo, high skill, physicality, fighting. JR was awesome to watch. And why on Earth would anybody take this seriously. People do realize Rafalski and Lebda are Americans so.........

Yzermania 156 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 (edited) I think there is more truth to this than all of you are wanting to believe. Personally, I've always thought Babs had someting against cheli for whatever reason. You really think in the middle of what could be another Cup Winning run, Cheli is gonna admit all that if it is indeed true? You seriosuly think he'd just come out and say "yah, babs is an ******* and said this and this and that to me". Even JR mentioned how much of a professional he is and that being the case he wouldn't air out dirty laundry that goes on behind the scenes..especially at this time. Say what you will about JR but he wouldn't just randomly pull s*** out of his ass like that. Edited May 21, 2009 by Yzermania

Probably from consciously spurning the Wings for the Flyers in 2002 only to see the Wings win another cup... And then again in 2008 while he was desperately clinging to his youth in San Jose. He can be the commanding voice if he wants to be. Power struggle? Then again, with Cheli, "deceptively quick" has turned into "just not fast enough." Maybe both possibilities are right. zata20 4 Report post Posted May 21, 2009 These kind of idiotic statements by Roenick kind of remind me of some made by Brett Hull a few years ago. When Dats' contract was up Hull said that he wouldn't re-sign with the Wings because he didn't like Babcock, and his system. Also, that he wanted to play with his best friend Ovie. We all what actually happened.
