can we resign Hossa and Hudler/Samuelsson?

I would rather have depth than one star player..... as proven by these playoff games.

It is easier to replace just one player than 3 or 4.

I love Hossa.... but I have to say "Here is your ring and thank you for your services, but we have to say goodbye."

So if Datsyuk was playing right now instead of Hossa the result would be the same or maybe even better.

I think it would be stupid to play Abby over Leino. Abby maybe good in the poffs, but Leino is much better when it comes to regular season producing. Just imagine Leino after he works with his skating the whole summer...

hmmm...

option #1: have Samuelsson and Hudler on the roster?

option #2: have Hossa (and Abdelkader/Leino...as an extra spot will open up) on the roster?

i'll pick option #2.

I'll let Holland do what he does. He always gets things done and the team always is good. Saying that if Hossa is back Sammy is gone for sure and Hudler might be too. Sammy I don't think they are signing just cause he's gonna get huge offers out there and it'll be hard to turn them down.

All three? Doubtful... Hossa + one or the other? Very likely. But both, who get signed, no matter what combo of the three we're talking about, will have to take less than market value to stay. The great question is this: How badly do they want to stay? We know Hossa wants to stay and is willing to take less to do so, but Hurds and Sammy? I dunno.

If I had to make this difficult choice, I'd keep Hurds over Sammy.

I would let Huds go if this would happen. If Leino plays we need Sammy to bring some D to our play, while Leino is good offensively. Hudler will probably ask more wages than Sammy too...but this is only if we can get Hoss + Leino + Sammy/Huds

In one of those both it's good and bad deals, if Lilja starts the season on the long-term injured list, (which unfortunately wouldn't surprise me at this point) I don't think he counts toward cap space until he's activated.

I want to say Leino is an UFA, and his contract is up after this series. So we probably need to give him a full time roster spot with the big club if we want to keep him. If Abby doesn't have to clear waivers to go to GR, then that's where he will start the season in all likliehood.

Lilja participated in full practice last week, I don't see why he would still be on LTIR in October. You are correct that Leino is a UFA and will more than likely take a roster spot because, more than likely, we will have to lose more than one player. Abdelkader does not have to clear waivers and you're right that he will start in Grand Rapids, barring injuries and an extremely impressive camp.

Let's say for a minute that the cap stays the same (it's most likely to go down, but we're just playing with Monopoly money here). :)

According to capgeek, we have about $4 Million to use to sign 3 forwards and 1 goalie. How does Hossa fit in anywhere there?

If Maltby retires, add $900k. Release Meech, another $500k. Sign either Howard or Conklin, there goes that $900k. So now you have $4.5M for 4 forwards.

The only way I can see Hossa staying is if Lidstrom reopens his contract and signs a new, say 4-year deal with 7.5, 7.5, 1 & 1 payouts. Cap hit of $4.25M next year instead of $7.5. There's your money for Hossa.

Oh, and Ericsson still has minor league options. If the cap space stays tight, he may back in GR next year.

Either the cap will remain roughly the same next year or fall ~$2.5m based on some option that I don't quite understand (because I haven't taken the time to look into it). If it stays the same (~$56.4m), here are the numbers:

Zetterberg (6.083) - Datsyuk (6.7) - Holmstrom (2.250)

Franzen (3.955) - Filppula (3.0) - X

Cleary (2.8) - X - Helm (.600)

Maltby (.883) - Draper (1.583) - Abdelkader (.850)

RFAs: Leino, Hudler

Gone: Samuelsson, Kopecky

Lidstrom (7.45) - Rafalski (6.0)

Stuart (3.75) - Kronwall (3.0)

Lilja (1.250) - Ericsson (.900)

Lebda (.650)

Gone: Chelios

AHL: Meech

Osgood (1.417)

Howard (.717)

That only leaves around $2.5m for two forwards. Hossa can't come back unless a lot is moved.

The wings have about as much chance of signing him under the cap as their being 400 hundred of these threads already out there, so I guess that means he will be in the winged wheel next year.

OP, the forum has a search function, type in hossa and then see if there are any threads on this topic!

Meech is out of options, so he'll probably go the Quincy route and be gone.

That's a better risk than your suggestion of "release him" because you have to buy his contract out, and then we would have to pay 1/3 of 2 times his remaining years.

chelios, draper, maltby most likely won't be back...abdelkader, helm, leino make the team out of camp. the wings have some young talent ready to move in and replace some veteran salary.

i wouldn't be surprised to see them be able to keep both hossa and hudler...i assume there won't be a major push to sign samuelson (nothing personal, just a numbers game).

-the people living in this house along w/ a few of our friends agree.......keep Hossa & Huds....Sammy, not really a LARGE part of the Wings....Huds has heart, he plays smart - and I think he does better when he's NOT out there w/ Sammy! I like some of the line changes and shifts that have been happening lately and I would hate to see Hossa and Huds go.......I could care less about Sammy....

Keeping Hossa and Hudler will be impossible unless another key player is removed. I.E. Filpulla, Rafalski, Cleary, Stuart...etc...

Step 1: Trade Rafalski, Holmstrom, and Lilja for picks

Step 2: Lock up Hossa to the same deal Z got

Step 3: Resign Hudler, Samuelsson, Leino, and Kopecky to deals that create the cap hits below

Step 4: Start working on a way to keep Helm in 2010!!!

Hossa (6.084) - Dats (6.7) - Filppula (3)

Franzen (3.96) - Zetterberg (6.084) - Cleary (2.8)

Abdelkader (.85) - Helm (.598) - Hudler (2.25)

Samuelson (1.35) - Draper (1.584) - Leino (.9)

Maltby (.884)

Kopecky (.6)

Lidstrom (7.45) - Ericsson (.9)

Kronwall (3) - Stuart (3.75)

Meech (.484) - Lebda (.65)

Kindl (.6)

Osgood (1.417)

Howard (.717)

Total = 56.612 million

Rafalski has a no-trade clause.

Kindl won't be a 7th defenseman in Detroit, he'll log big minutes in Grand Rapids.

I don't see how the Wings can keep Hossa. I also think they'll have trouble signing both Hudler and Samuelsson. Holland will have to gut the team's depth to keep more than one of these guys, especially Hossa. Is he worth that?

Since people are going to have to be lost as noted by Holland several times, I think the prudent way to approach this off season is 1st, see who we will even be able to realistically keep and who will get offers that will not make sense to meet, Sammy and Hudler may get offers like this, other names always come up during this time of year as well, guys with NTC's as well in other talks as teams look to fill holes.

As much as I would like to see a way to keep Hossa, I think the least he can do if he does want to stay is to see what the situation around Huds and Sammy etc (and any other working Holland may have in mind) pop up 1st. Secondly Ozzie is doing great now, will he be playoff Ozzie or Reg Season Ozzie next year? Should we let Conks walk if he will take an acceptable contract? What do we do after next year when Ozzie most likely retires? Having watched many Griffins games this past year, I am not a huge believer in Howard.

Lastly and along the lines of Hossa wanting to remain a Wing, we have several guys who have contracts coming up and some may retire next year... if he really wants to stay, he could sign another 1 year deal and see what happens during that year.

...no way Homer goes anywhere, he retires a Wing.

Also as this subject comes up ad-nauseum, the one question I always wonder about is if players can re-open their contracts and re-negotiate them? In other words (obviously hypothetical) could Raf or Lids or X player reopen their contract and renegotiate and a better cap hit to free up some space for Holland to work with?

*DISCLAIMER*

You cannot reopen/restructure/renegotiate contracts!!! Once a contract is signed, and approved by the league it cannot be renegotiated.

Yeah I don't know aobut that... Didn't some of the boys do that so we could get *hurl* Brett Hull back in the day?

LMAO... Still.. If keeping Hossa means giving up on Hudles, whom I have grown to love. Ehhh, we don't really NEED Hossa do we? I still feel bad for Sammy though. He's had a really strong playoff but, I just don't see him sticking.

I'm sorry, but if you are valuing Hudler more than Hossa, (which I'm not sure if you are or not) you'll have to explain to me why...
