Good news for Team Canada

Ferraro calls for Niedermayer to captain Canada

June 2nd, 2009, 1:53 pm · 3 Comments · posted by Curtis Zupke, Staff writer

The names most often brought up regarding the captaincy of Team Canada for the 2010 Winter Olympics seem to be Sidney Crosby and Jarome Iginla.

Crosby is the face of the NHL who waqs given the captain’s ‘C’ by the Pittsburgh Penguins at 19. Iginla is a premier power forward who has played on the past two Olympic teams.

However, hockey analyst and former player Ray Ferraro called for Ducks defenseman Scott Niedermayer (right, in the 2004 World Championships) to wear the ‘C’ for Canada in a radio interview Tuesday on the “The Jim Rome Show†(KLAC/570).

Ferraro said Niedermayer’s understated leadership would go the furthest in a room full of superstars.

“The way that he works just commands respect,†Ferraro said. “That, to me, is a great form of leadership. Niedermayer, for longevity and service and the respct that he commands around the league, I think Scott Niedermayer’s got to be that captain.â€

Part of why Niedermayer has not been mentioned as prominently as Crosby and Iginla among candidates might be because he has not announced whether he will return to play this season, a presumed requisite for the Olympics in February in Vancouver.

Niedermayer has only played in one Olympics, in 2002, but his international experience has been well documented. He is the only player to have won a Stanley Cup, Olympic gold medal, World Championship, World Cup, Memorial Cup and World Junior title.

OMG, a cheap shot artist from the Anaheim weakling Sucks? Canada will not win Gold with this kind of dirty player.

What the Heck!! I'm glad it' IYO!!

Iginla. Iggy has the respect of pretty much everyone in the league.

Another possible choice may be Rick Nash or another darkhorse candidate like that.

Is it because you hate Scotty and don't think he has earned the Team Canada Captain position or is it just because Scotty is now an Anaheim Ducks? However, this doesn't mean he will be Duck in the future, he is after all UFA!! What it is plays for Vancouver or even the Wings (very little chance), would you say the same thing? I really think Scotty's resume says it all, IMHO.

I'll support any team Canada captain, but it should be Iginla.

Okay, agreed, Iginla would make an equally great Captain but popularity always seems to get in the way of decision-making!!

So basically Team Canada will announce they won't be participating in the 2010 Olympics, and then will rejoin the tournament during the Knockout Rounds?

I feel there should be at least an assistant captain on defense, and Niedermayer would be the best choice. I wouldn't want to see him as captain at all, but assistant is very likely for sure. I think it will look like... Iginla as captain with Crosby and Niedermayer as the assistants, and if a third assistant captain is there, give it to Thornton.

I see no reason why Neidermayer shouldn't be captain. Course, its not up to me, its up to Yzerman. He is after all very well decorated and a veteran defenseman. He has won 4 Stanley Cups, a gold medal in the olympics, a memorial cup, etc. The guy is a leader and knows how to win.

I think it is a good choice. He would be one of, if not the most experienced player on the team. He's won Cups with 2 teams, though I can't remember if he won twice with the Devils or just the one time. This guy has been there, done that. Same can't be said of Iginla or Crosby...yet.

I HATE Scott Niedermayer far more than Chris Pronger but I think the decision would be a good one.
