eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted June 11, 2009 So I was debating how, other than biased opinions and potentially padded stats, the Smythe winner could be predicted. And I came up with this little gem. It's sort of a "Smythe calculator" of sorts. For each series played, the team's top five players for that series are selected. Players are awarded points in this fashion: 1st-10, 2nd-8, 3rd-6, 4th-4, 5th-2. Multiply the number of points by the round the series was played in (the best player for the team in round two gets 20 points) and you have your Smythe calculator. The highest potential score is 100, which means being the best in all rounds. Also, the Cup winning team would get some amount of bonus points I have yet to determine because I haven't compared my Smythe calculator to past results yet. So we'll leave that out for now. The Red Wings' point ranking, entering the series, of: Osgood 56 Franzen 38 Lidstrom 34 Zetterberg 32 Cleary 8 Datsyuk 8 Filppula 6 These rankings are after three rounds. Based on the first six games of the finals, assuming nothing changes the current "top-five" in game 7, the final result would be: Osgood 88 Zetterberg 72 Lidstrom 58 Franzen 46 Cleary 24 Datsyuk 8 Filppula 6 And Osgood would be the Smythe winner, as Malkin is the only Pens player who has been good enough to compare to how important Osgood has been (92 points for Malkin, currently 62 for Crosby unless something impressive happens in Game 7) and wins if the Pens win the Cup. Torless 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2009 (edited) It's a good idea - at least it should assist in the decision. Though with Game 6 in Pittsburgh you see the problem when Fleury is #1 and Osgood's nowhere on the board. Give me a freakin' break. Scuderi should take 1st star over what muffins Fleury knocked away... Cleary's breakaway was pretty good, but still. No respect on enemy turf. Oh... I see - you weren't talking about star selections... Still... that pissed me off Edited June 11, 2009 by Torless

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted June 11, 2009 I wouldn't mind seeing this implemented as a general guideline or filter or something, but I would be hesitant to remove the debate involved, as it doesn't account for what teams are defeated in the process. The MVP of a team against the Ducks is going to carry a lot more merit than the MVP of a team against the Blackhawks, yet the MVP against the Hawks will get more points in this system. There will also be similar problems when comparing teams between divisions. Is a MVP against the Flyers, Caps, and Canes equally as important as the MVP against the Jackets, Ducks, and Hawks? Offsides 21 Report post Posted June 11, 2009 I think the worst case scenario would be that we win the Cup and somehow Crosby or Malkin gets the Conn Smythe. I don't think it would happen, but with all the Crosby love that would really....grrrrr....
WingZNut13 99 Report post Posted June 11, 2009 Very good idea. I would love to see some sort of mathmatical formula put into play. Another thing I would add would be a player vote. Both teams vote on their own team and the opposing team for a Con Smythe. I think this would add a little more credibility to the whole thing. It come come down to this.... WHEN detroit wins.......Ozzie is you Con Smythe. If Pitt wins....It's Malkin. Bottom line...I am calling it now.

I don't think it would happen, but with all the Crosby love that would really....grrrrr.... Osgood has to pretty much do everything he can to hand game 7 over to the Pens, like give up 5 goals to Malkin on 8 total shots after the Wings' 3rd and 4th lines score 6 goals. Then Conklin holds them off and the Wings win, and Malkin gets the CS.

Actually the worst case scenario would be that we won zero trophies... but that's the optimism I like to see here.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted June 11, 2009 Yeah, after last game it'll take a HUGE game 7 from Zetterberg to unseat Osgood (or a terrible game 7 from Ozzy, but that's unlikely to happen if the Wings win it). Same goes for Crosby if he has a chance of unseating Malkin. The thing is, all bets are off in game 7-- if someone dominates game 7 their chance of winning the Smythe is suddenly much better. Say Datsyuk manages to pick up 2 goals and 2 assists, he suddenly has a shot at the Smythe, even having missed the first 4 games of the finals. All bets are off
