Feldmarschall 9 Report post Posted June 30, 2009 Apologies if this has already been posted. Details forthcoming, but I wouldn't have pegged Gomez as the number one guy they wanted. He's a far cry from Vinny.

T-Ruff 47 Report post Posted June 30, 2009 Heatley to the Rangers is the first thing I thought too.... Montreal fans can kiss Vinny goodbye, kind of too bad....
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted June 30, 2009 Yeah, Heater to the Rangers is looking good now. They just gained 6 mil in cap room and already had close to 18 mil, now thats 24 to get Giradi, Staal, Callahan, Dubinsky and Zherdev signed. Lots of room to fit Heatley in. Statts 4 Report post Posted June 30, 2009 Great move by the Rangers imo. I really see Heatley going to the Rangers now. Indeed. Gomez is one of the most over rated and over payed players in the NHL
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted June 30, 2009 The Montreal Canadiens have acquired centre Scott Gomez, winger Tom Pyatt and defenceman Mike Busto from the New York Rangers in exchange for winger Chris Higgins and defensemen Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko from the Montreal Canadiens. Full deal, great trade for New York, cap space, a 20 goal scorer, 2 solid young defenceman.
cr00d 26 Report post Posted June 30, 2009 great move for both teams. More of a salary dump for the Rangers, though Higgins has proved he can be a pretty good player from time to time... and as stated above, perhaps a move leading to them landing Heatly. Not a big fan of Gomez at the salary he's under contract for, but he's always put up points and is a great playmaker. Perhaps MTL can use a little more of their soon to be cap space and pick up a Gaborik/Cammalleri/Hossa type to play on his wing?

bonan78 1 Report post Posted June 30, 2009 While at first glance this might appear to be a very one-sided affair in favor of the Rangers, who will likely use the cap space to bring Heatley on board, plus picked up a promising young forward in Higgins who has already had a 20 goal season but disappointed last year. But, Gomez could be a good pick-up for the Habs, when you consider they would have had to give up a lot more to get Vinny from Tampa, they still have enough cap space to bring in a high profile winger (ala Gaborik, who they were rumored to have been trying to trade for in the regular season before his injury). It'll be interesting to see what ensues for these two clubs.

Bad day to be a habs fan.

bonan78 1 Report post Posted June 30, 2009 Whatever happened to: "The team that gets the best player wins the trade" ? Gomez > Higgins Usually this would be the case, but the Rangers just unloaded a HUGE contract, one which they never should have signed to begin with (anyone who thinks Gomez should be making 8 million a year is on something) and they got a solid player in return, plus they have more cap space to bring in a big-name free agent, or as many others here have already speculated, trade for Heatley, plus they get a solid scorer in Higgins plus a couple of prospects. Clearly this was a good move by the Rangers, time will tell how it turns out for Montreal.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted June 30, 2009 (edited) Ah, so overpaid, underperforming centre is traded for young, promising but slowly developing centre. An ok deal for the Canadians, to be honest. Although Lang was a good #1 centre for them last year, if he recovers from his injury they suddenly have good depth at centre, which is important given how lame Thomas P is as a first line centre. Rangers look like the winners right now because they got to unload one of their worst signings in recent years (other two are still in NY). Wings_Toledo 233 Report post Posted June 30, 2009 Not that this has any bearing on what happens in real life, but in my "Be A Pro" mode in NHL '09, Pronger got traded to Philly and Heatley ended up with the Rangers. Very odd.

dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted June 30, 2009 Drury and Redden, good players, overpaid by 4.5 million each. Oh year, definitely. Drury to Ottawa maybe, for Heatley? And then the Rangers can afford to get Hossa as well, though they'd need some centermen of course.
