Come to Detroit Neeeeeeeil :)

Actually saying this, there is a rumour going around that Detroit is looking for a proper tough guy for their 4th...Chris Neil and Colton Orr have been mentioned...

I can see this being legit. When not one, but TWO of your roster players are out for extended periods of time because they suck at fighting and shouldn't be fighting in the first place, you need to do something about it.

I'm sure Kenny Holland has visions of Big-E getting in over his head and being put out cold for a few games, if not more. That should be enough to motivate him to look for a legit tough guy.

Neil is not really much of an enforcer, but at this point he would be an improvement over any of our fighters (except Lilja, who mahandled Neil in their 1 fight :) )

Can Orr play hockey better than a guy like Downey? I know Neil is better than Downey, but I really don't know much about Orr other than that he was a legit heavy weight at one point.

not by much but yeah from what I've seen of Orr he at least able to be on the 4th line more then a lot of goons

I know many probably won't agree with me, but I hope if we get a goon we get a true "goon" in the sense that he will make ANYONE pay regardless of name; whether it be Boogard, Pronger, Perry, Crosby, Kipper, or even Bettman; if we are going to do it, we need to do it right!

The key to the "Chris Neil turns down 1.7M offer from the Ottawa Senators" might have a lot less to do with the "1.7" and a lot more to do with the "Ottawa Senators" part. Who wants to willingly climb into that black hole?

Good point. See Heatley, Dany.

exactly how I felt, I wanted Big E to destroy, but at the same time was very apprehensive because he is a big guy, and goes from 0-100 in anger like that. But he isn't the greatest fighter around, and Holland had to of taken note with Kopecky, and especially Lilja (who really hurt losing in the playoffs). Kenny knows fighting isn't going any where so..........

I'd also like to point out that when the wings were called soft and weak before, Kenny beefed up the roster both in the 90's and even 08

Colton Orr. < $1MM, please. Thank you.

:beerbuddy:

That first video was basically him getting owned by Brashear and clutching onto Brashear's jersey for dear life. I hope he's better than that sample. Give him credit for not going down, though.

I was just impresseed with him being able to hold his own with a top heavy, is this one better?

I am not that in love with Chris Neil. He's getting old, he isn't a very good player anymore, and he can't hang with the league's tough guys anymore. He isn't good enough to play in a shutdown or scoring roll for the Wings, so he's more or less just a tough guy. He isn't all that much better than McCarty. His game skills and his fighting skills are on the decline - I'd like to see him make his retirement tour elsewhere.

If the Wings sign Orr, I'm buying a new sweater!

Orr is a marginally better hockey player than Downey, and was getting up to 10 minutes a game with the Rangers -- though he would never see a second of playoff time.

I always thought Orr was one of the worst fighters I have ever seen (as far as actual enforcers), though the guy is certainly more than willing to go, but I think Downey is actually a better fighter. Laperiere is the guy who would fit in best...

Agreed, neither Downey nor Orr are among the league's elite heavies - but both are able and willing to go with the league's toughest when the time comes. Orr is young-ish, which is nice. My wife thinks Downey is hot, so in the interest of having my wife watch more games with me, I'd rather the Wings kept Downey. I know that won't happen though, and I'll be thrilled if Orr gets signed and plays a full season this year. Orr on the ice is tougher than Downey in GR.

why are so many people here have such a hardon for a fighter? This team could be losing close to 80 goals and you want a guy who scored 1 last year? here's a question to all of you... how does he make a team that lost in game 7 of the cup finals by one goal better? Does his whole 6 minutes of ice time really give the Wings a cup? He played even less in the playoffs.

You really think he's on the decline already?

I know he's had a few injuries these past few seasons, but I gotta think there's at least 2-3 seasons left in him...He's certainly what I'd consider a significant upgrade over McCarty/Downey.

I just looked it up. I thought Neil was like 35. I was wrong.

Are you under the impression that some here are advovcating replacing Hossa with Colton Orr?

I don't think anyone really thinks that Orr or Neil will be the piece that brings the Cup back to Hockeytown - but either guy will bring a bit of attitude, a bit of edge that the Wings have been missing. They aren't terrible defensive liabilities, neither takes a lot of dumb penalties, and both are willing to do anything they can to help the team in anyway they can. That kind of attitude is contagious.

How did you feel about the Wings picking Joey Kocur up out of a Sr league after they had a great (though Cupless) season?

No not saying that they replace Hossa with them, not at all. I don't think people are saying that either. But I just want more than some fighter. Neil I can see, he plays 3rd line minutes. Orr plays less than that and does less than that. Neil has shown in the past he can be a contributing player other than just fighting. Orr hasn't shown that in the very little bit I've watched him. He's a fighter and that's it. Honestly I don't really remember when Joey signed what I thought. But looking back Joey stepped in and played well and wasn't just some goon. Hell looking at his stats hes score more in the half season he played witht he Wings then Orr did all last year. Give me a guy who can play both ends of the ice and can also drop the gloves. I don't want a guy who plays less than 4 minutes a game come playoff time. I don't see how that is helpful.

Fair point. Would you feel any different if Orr had 9pts instead of 5 last year though?

Low TOI doesn't bother me. I like the idea of having a young body-throwing 3rd liner pick up a few additional minutes with the 4th line here and there, when the team's tough guy's skills aren't needed. In that sort of scenerio, I don't think a diciplined toughguy with a limited skillset hurts the team at all.

I like the idea of having a guy who can play both ends of the ice and drop the gloves, but on the other hand, I don't like the idea of losing a guy who can play both ends of the ice to a broken hand or head. Let the thuggish, roided-up no-skill ogres do the fighting and the visor-clad heartless Euro-sissies do the scoring.

THIS!

At what point do people start pointing their fingers more at Brian Murray. Look at the facts! He was NOT the orchestrator of the Cup Finals run a couple years back, that was John Muckler. Inexplicably, management fired Muckler after that season and put Murray at the helm. Since that happened, Murray has officially run that team into the ground to the point where free agents never seem to resign (fairly small sample size, but still damning evidence IMO) and even the players that they do have under contract want out (see Heatley, Daniel). The guy has been a schmuck. Now I'm not saying that the guy is a terrible GM in the vein of John Ferguson Jr. or anything like that, he truly was pivotal in building the team that beat the Sens for the Cup back in '07 (moreso that Burke was, IMO), but he has done NOTHING as the GM of Ottawa in terms of making them a better team. It's not as if they are rebuilding and setting up a solid core for the future; they just suck!

Honestly, living in Canada I have seen a significant amount of media exposure surrounding the guy. The guy truly is confident and unflappable, and always gives off the aura that he is in complete control of what is going on in Ottawa, alot like Kenny is here. The only difference is that things have literally started falling apart for the Sens since his first day as GM. Its gotten to the point that I honestly believe that the fact that his reputation has gone relatively untarnished seems to be credited more to his professional presence than to his ability to actually run a team.

I've always like Ottawa, but it is clear that Murray is going to have to be sent packing before that team can turn it around.
