it's quiet... A little too quiet...

I gotta say, I find all this a bit strange. I know we don't have any cap to speak of, and there are plenty of effective gems hidden in the best of the rest, it's just weird,....

Every news source i look at, all the blogs,..all the reports

not a single one is about the wings looking at a freaking soul

I can't even find an update on the hudler/sammy situation.

My take on this, is it's classic Holland. He's biding his time, getting all his wings in a row.

We as a team will get universally panned as "falling behind, with the departure of stars"

Then, it'll happen, like it's happened since 2002,..we'll pluck guys from freaking no where, who will then go on to be very productive red wings.

I think there will be a training camp invite who explodes ala cleary

I also think a FA will be more productive than he ever has been when he's signed to a general "huh?!?!?" from our fan base.

Holland is like Warren Wallace,..he's in the back,....waiting,...ready to STRIKE.

I'm so curious to see what this guy does.

Honestly, ever since YG's mentioned Mark Bell, he just seems like the perfect fit. He's size and grit, but if he comes to camp and works hard with Babs, like Cleary did, he might just find his goal scoring touch again.

As far as the quietness, Hossa was signed on the 3rd day of FA, Drake was signed later on in the summer in 07, Rafalski was really the only guy signed on Day 1 that was a big splash player.

Mark Bell? Where was he mentioned? I wouldnt mind getting him, but how cheap would be be? Might just be the perfect fit if he would come cheap. Where did you source this at?

Not a source, a thread started on here just throwing out names that would probably come cheap and provide us with some of the things we need. More then likely, Kenny wont even be interested, but we can all speculate and hope.

no where in particular. After the lockout he was LGW offical object of lust, then his career came off the rails. He was last seen as a waiver wire pickup from the rags. He's a ufa and his career is basically over unless he lands somewhere that can revitalise it.

Long story short, he made a bad choice in driving drunk and it's altered his career forever.

I would invite him to camp in a heartbeat. i didnt realize he was a free agent but i just checked and he is an UFA. I think its worth a shot to give him an invite, but Holland probably wont be having any of that...

I dont' know, sounds like a perfect holland project except he's exactly the type of guy we all love around here,....Big, Strong on the puck, Hits, Fights and has flashes of offensive brillance.

Guess we'll see.

I'm hoping for a new free agent. Someone who the Wings can really get real some value out of and make other teams along us Wings fans think, "Who the hell is that guy and where has he been hiding all this time?"

I think he would fill the hole that drake left but supply a little bit of scoring ability to take the edge off of losing Hossa. Of course hes not ganna score 40 goals likehossa, he prob woudlnt break 20-25 or so, but it would be nice to have a big body who still has good puck control, kind of like another Franzen. I think its worth inviting him to camp. Hell he was only making like 1.4 million last year, and coming out of the AHL he prob would be Dirt cheap, and just happy to get a chance.

People will be saying that when Leino scores 30 goals and gets 70-80 points. :D

I was about to say the same thing....maybe not 80 points, but he will surpise some people. He is sure ganna make Holland look like a genius using that brunnstrom guy as a decoy talking him up, and then pulling a switch and grabbing Leino instead when noone was watching.

I'm not sure about many guys getting an invite to training camp this year for the Wings. Camp is going to be short because they start the season out in Sweden so I don't know if Holland will be offering many invitations this year.

Yeah 80 points is maybe a bit optimistic, but it also depends on what lines they'll go with.

Put him on a 2nd line with Franzen and Filppula and I think he could do some great things.

Mark Bell?

Wow... are we LGWers getting desperate, or what?

I don't see any problem with posters here wanting the Wings to get bigger... I sure don't. Bell is only 28 years old, picked 8th overall and had some promising 45+ point seasons. I think the kid deserves a second chance even if it's not with on the Wings. But I do think he would sign a 1 year deal for $750 - $800,000 and could potentially score as many goals as Sammy.

Lets face it, there's not a lot out there that Red Wings can afford and we do need to fill a couple of holes.

He said that he's been working on his skating for two or three straight summers now, more specifically this past summer with Fil and Janne Hänninen, a three time Olympian speed skater. Little things such as lowering body position, which should improve balance and allow him to use more of the strength in his legs.

Edit: Here's the link.

Really? Whats wrong with Mark Bell? Young, promising guy, big strong and skilllful with the puck. What are reasons that you would not want him here? He would be cheap and exactly what the wings are looking for. Big body, cheap rate, putsthe puck in the net. not exactly a power forward yet, but on his way. Hes one of the only realistic choices ive seen so far, so i dont really know what your problem is exactly....

Good to hear. I love that we seem to go out and get great guys that are always trying to improve their game, it really helps represent the type of player the Red Wings orginzation goes after. You see so many of these guys that are so set in their ways and dont care about getting better, tehy just want to cas h a pay check. Its refreshing.

You're right. The first thing that scouts mentioned about him is that he loves to come to the rink and practice and put his equipment on and all those little intangibles that distinguish the good from the great.

The only thing that I think he'll have a hard time improving/changing is his willingness to dive when he's not getting the calls. He's not shy about it at all and he's done it for the longest time even going back to even before he used to play in SM-liiga apparently.

I think the boys from Grand Rapids will be a pleasant surprise for Wings fans and a nightmare for rest of the league. I'm not sure Ken Holland will have to do anything shocking or unexpected to field another exciting contender.

Mark Bell would be a good tryout gamble, ala Cleary, because if any team can push an under-achiever, it'd be the Wings...and if not, he's gone.

As for his legal troubles, what Bell did was stupid, idiotic, a really bad decision...but not the worst possible outcome. How many people remember that Craig MacTavish was convicted of killing someone (!!) while driving drunk and served jail time for it. Granted, it was in the dark ages before the "internet" but he bounced back pretty well without much backlash, and there's probably only a handful of people on this board that remember or have heard that.

did Mark Bell kill anyone? I know he was involved in a drunken hit and run but i dont know all the details. Even if he did, Look at Dany Heatley, he kills his teammate by drinking (apparently under the leagal limit but still) and losing control of his car killing his teammate. He recieved a second chance too. Why cant Bell?

Hopefully he doesn't wait to long - I mean there is nothing left for the most part right now - can't imagine anything worth while being available when Holland - according to you - "decides to strike".

Love Mark Bell. He took his punishment and has moved on. Doubt we will pick him up though - while I would LOVE to sign him, I don't see him fitting the mold Kenny and co. have decided to settle on in regards to "player type".
