I remember like it was yesterday when the Sharks were so good, and could make a run in the playoffs. Now what there doing is... very QUESTIONABLE!

That crying Sharks kid's dad is my personal hero. That kid should send his dad to their GM's office to have a word with him.

"You are giving the league the 2x4 to beat you with and my son has lost his god damn brains! You are making an ass of your team for all eternity!"

All the Sharks need to do is trade Doug Murray and Jonathan Cheechoo to get a solid bottom-three defensive defenseman who makes less than $750k, a decent pick, and a 2nd/3rd line winger who makes about $1.5m and can score 10-15 goals and play solid two-way.

That gives them over $3m to sign or promote 3 forwards and a goalie.

Who is going to want Cheechoo and his contract though? He's been pretty worthless lately.

They can probably bury salary in the AHL as a temporary solution.....or get somebody to do it for them. I'm sure Burke would take a guy like Cheechoo or somebody of the like that's way overpaid and a 3rd or 4th round pick for some AHL scrub and then stick Cheechoo in the AHL (and then re-entry waivers if somebody wanted him).

I was just asking myself why the Sharks don't just do this themselves. It would be a very crude and disloyal management move but wouldn't it solve their problem. Not only is Cheechoo's salary working against them, but the cap is too, and every GM knows it.

I just don't know if their ownership would be interested in doing that. I don't know what kind of budget they're working under.

The bigger problem for them is that Cheechoo is signed for 2010/11, as well. I suspect he'll be a buyout candidate next summer.

Any update on the sharks situation? Still only 9 forwards and 1 goalie signed.. I cant seem to find anything.

I think they're about $1-million over the cap and still need to sign at least 2 forwards... they do have 7-D though and I don't know who the guy backing up Nabokov is (Thomas Greiss?)... but they'll need him to play some games if Nabby is gonna have anything left for the playoffs.

$332,000 over the cap with 19 players signed.

With the newly announced signing of Ryan Clowe, the Sharks are right up against the cap and with only 9 forwards and 1 goaltender signed.

2009-2010 San Jose Sharks

FORWARDS

Joe Thornton $7,200,000

Patrick Marleau $6,300,000

Milan Michalek $4,333,333

Ryane Clowe $3,500,000

Jonathan Cheechoo $3,000,000

Joe Pavelski $1,637,500

Devin Setoguchi $1,246,666

Jamie McGinn $996,666

Jody Shelley $725,000

DEFENSEMEN

Dan Boyle $6,666,666

Rob Blake $3,500,000

Marc-Edouard Vlasic $3,100,000

Christian Ehrhoff $3,100,000

Douglas Murray $2,500,000

Kent Huskins $1,700,000

Brad Lukowich $1,566,666

GOALTENDERS

Evgeni Nabokov $5,375,000

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (including bonuses)

ROSTER SIZE 17

SALARY CAP $56,800,000

PAYROLL $56,447,497

BONUS MONEY (ESTIMATED) (1.3% of cap) $740,000

CAP ROOM $352,503

CAP ROOM PER OPEN SPOT $58,751

To me it looks like they're gonna be forced to move JT or Marleau.

They seem to have a lot of guys capable of playing in their top 6, but not much in the way of grinders/role players... you know, the moens or griers.

With the depth of their defence and this cap issue I find it very surprising that they gave Blake such a big contract for this year.

What do you guys think they'll do?

im thinkin Marleau is gone...they didnt strip him of his captaincy for nothing

The San Jose Sharks could suck this year (for them...they won't suck, but they don't have to be as good as last year) in a lot of ways and I think they'll skate to an easy first place just because of their division. The most divisional pressure they'll get is from the Ducks and it'll pale in comparison to what's going to happen in the Central.

I would take Marleau at his salary, assuming it was affordable. A point per game player who is pretty responsible in his own end... A young team picking him up would be very beneficial... He has what it takes, never really lived up to the hype, but a new environment where he is the experienced leader would help him.

So young, potential elite teams like Columbus, LA, St. Louis, etc, etc... Would gain something with his presence.

What happens if a team is run so poorly that they overpay players, get right up against the cap, and can't unload said players because no one wants to tae on ridiculous contracts? If SJ needs to unload a few big name players, what happens if no one wants to take them?

The official rules of the CBA says that the NHL would seize control of the club and make necessary moves to make the team cap compliant.

It won't get to that, though.

Worst case for San Jose is that they have to send players (read Cheechoo) to the AHL to get under the cap.

It kinda amazes me how there's a possibility of the Sharks sending Cheechoo to the AHL... The same guy who won a post-lockout Richard Trophy.

Could always take the s***tsburgh way. f*** it up after Nabokov retires for 5 years to get high draft picks...Then suck off Bettman to get a cup.

What surprises me is that San Jose, despite being run so poorly and having a massive accumulation of lazy talent, has such great regular seasons.

One would think that if they replaced Marleau and Thornton with players who could actually perform under pressure (or in Marleau's case, perform at all) they would be in pretty good shape.

The term "leader" and Marleau do not belong in the same discussion. Hence the lack of playoff success.

Columbus should pitch for Joe.

Imagine him setting up Nash. That would be a scary duo... big too.

I can easily imagine it as i ve seen the duo Thornton-Nash during the lockout playing in the swiss championship together... and they won it.. :)

They could trade Marleau or Thorton to Edmonton for 2 or 3 cheap forwards and they would be all set.

They back-up goaltending, lack of leadership and inexperienced head coach will keep them from going anywhere though.
