Hudler files for arbitration

I guess there wasn't much interest in terms of an offer sheet for Hudler.... and the teams know the Wings predicament.... so how many really think he is worth $3 - $3.5 mil.

Don't freak out just yet. This is just a smart financial move by Hudler (and all financially responsible RFA's btw) on the event that Holland doesn't offer him anything that he likes. They still have a while to negotiate a deal, and Hudler knows the financial crunch as well as the reputation that the Wings have.

Also: no other teams can throw an offer at him

Just the people informed enough to know what other players in the NHL are making.

This is the exact situation we had with Filppula last year- he filed for arbitration and the Wings signed him before the hearing.

Hopefully the same thing happens this time.

Bye- Bye Hudler. :(

Nah Nah Nah Nah Hey Hey Hey Goodbye! :yahoo:

edit: Maybe, but one step closer!

You guys do know that this is standard procedure in these situations, right? Filppula did the exact same thing.

The Wings actually had the money to make Flip a good offer though. There is a lot more uncertainty over Hudler's filing...

While im not the biggest fan of Hudler, I would be pretty sad to see him go. He played well most of the time. I guess I just feel we have lost A LOT of players this past week... Even if half of them didnt matter much.

He's not going anywhere, he'll be signed before his hearing. If anything this is going to make it more likely he stays because he can't recieve offer sheets anymore.

Yeah, this is actually relatively old news, and it means Hudler is more likely to stay thanl eave. It also doesn't mean that other teams aren't interested, it means Hudler is committed to staying here.

True. I just wanted to dispell the myth that this was a negative sign. Holland knew he would file for arbitration- if Hudler didn't the Wings would have. It gives them offer sheet protected time to work out a deal.

The Wings won't let Hudler go if he can be kept for 3million or less, they'll just have to dump a defenseman and figure out the Lilja situation.

If he gets more than that they have the option to trade him, in which case we get some assets coming back the other way.

Regardless, this isn't an untenable situation, it's just a tough one.

Playing these games with Hulder until the arbitration hearings begin, July 20th or so, could cost the Wings a chance at getting a good gritty forward..... guys like Moen, Veilleux and Gratton won't be on the market that long.

The max the Wings can give Hudler is 2.9 mil if Leino gets a 5% pay raise and that's only if Lilja salary doesn't count. After that the Wings have to dump the extra defensemen... so they are down to 6 defensemen and 12 forwards and 2 goalies. NOT gonna happen. So if Hudler wants more than 2.9 mil he is gone..... plain and simple.

Lilja's salary will always count, whether he's on LTIR or not.

YES.... so the Wings can NOT use the cap relief to become cap compliant. Because cap relief would be only for a player's salary of 1.25 mil or less.

Unless he's initially deemed healthy enough, doesn't make the team, and is waived and sent to Grand Rapids. Then it won't count.

When he is waived a portion of his salary counts against the cap..... I use to know how to calculate that but I have forgotten.

So if Lilja is healthy and he is bought-out the cap hit would be 417,000 for the next 2 years.

Yes, and Holmstrom's cap hit would be $750k if he were bought out; in another thread you'll find me arguing that buying out Holmstrom and having Downey as the 12th forward for $500k with $1.3m in cap space is a ridiculous idea as it's basically havign Downey for a $1.25m cap hit. But what does that have to do with sending Lilja to Grand Rapids? He's well past the age where he would have minor league options, therefore he would have to pass through waivers to play in the AHL. If he were sent to the AHL, he'd still be paid the same amount but would not count on the Wings' cap. Much like Khabibulin for the first half of last season did not count against Chicago because he was in the minors.

So Lilja would have to be healthy first and cleared to play to be waived. If he is not healthy the Wings are screwed. They would get cap relief but can't use that to become cap compliant at the start of the season.

It depends on how injured he is. If he's so injured that he cannot play again and retires, then he is off the books. If he is injured to the point where he goes on LTIR, then it goes like this:

The Wings put him on LTIR and have at least another $300k or so open, and consider Ericsson the 'replacement' for him as far as the cap relief is concerned. That way they have more time to deal with the cap scenarios if Lilja is returning, but can use up as much of the cap relief as possible while he is out.

The other option is that Lilja is healthy enough to play, in which case the Wings don't have to deal with LTIR but do have to move a defenseman.

So the question is if Lilja is on LTIR to start the season can Ericsson be on the opening day roster or does he officially have to start the season on the AHL roster then be brought up to satisfy cap compliance on opening day?
