Fil's Play

With the recent Euro purge going on for the Wings, he's likely to become LGW's favorite overrated player.

Let's hope he actually puts together a complete season for once. Our secondary scoring as of now looks slim, especially if Holland continues to sit on his ass and admire his Stanley Cup rings of the past.

Gcom, not sure what your argument is. 3 goals, yes, but also 13 assists. That puts him at 16 pts -- 4th on the team in the playoffs in points ... right behind Zetterberg, Franzen, and Lidstrom. So, yeah, he's worth his salary because he provides goals and assists when it matters most. I may be in the minority, but I think Fil earns his salary and I believe he'll get better because he's gaining confidence in his abilities.

As for any comparison between "player x" and Datsyuk, there is none. Datsyuk is in a class by himself. That's NHL-wide. I think the previous poster was just suggesting that at Flip's age, he's still just improving and he has the ability to be a playmaker -- otherwise he wouldn't have gotten those 13A in the playoffs.

Hudler had 4 goals in the postseason, with none of them occurring in the last two series. He had 8 assists for a 12 point total, and was +4.

Filppulla only had one less goal in the postseason, with two of his three coming against Pittsburgh when the Wings needed it the most. Filppulla also had 13 assists, which alone beats out Hudler's point total, and was a +8. It was relatively easy to see that Filppulla's play was far more dominant than Hudler's this postseason just by watching the games, but in case your friends missed the entire playoffs, the statistics back up your arguments just as well.

you forgot to mention fil's superior 2-way game, that of like a true red wing. the fact that fil is a better, faster skater thus making him more of an offensive and defensive weapon than huds. now in the coming year, fil is going to get hudler's PP mins and double his point total, as he didn't get PP time last year.

hudler is replacable! leino should step in nicely. 9 pts in 13 games = 57 in 82.....sound like someone we know?? hmm...

I 99% agree with Gcom007 --

Steve Yzerman was pimping Zetterberg as the next captain before even Zetterberg's rookie season.

Brett Hull was saying Datsyuk would become one of the best players in the world throughout Datsyuk's rookie year.

Babcock had Franzen on a scoring line with Datsyuk in the pre-season three years ago, until he was injured.

The offensive talent of these guys was apparent from the beginning -- it is not with Flip.

The 1% I disagree with in Gcom007's posts is that Filppula *did* have an incredible post-season --- for him.

16 points and 13 assists might be close to his high-water mark for his career -- and he greatly benefited from playing on a line with Franzen and Hossa. But he never really "set them up", he just got them the puck and let them do their thang. That is not a "playmaker".

But Filppula played with hustle and determination every shift, and that was great to see. He is an ideal defensive center who can make a difference on the score sheet -- he is no Jordan Staal (whom you can see glimpses of real offensive talent), but he is ideal as a third line center who can fill-in on a 2nd line and pull some major PK minutes. God help us if he becomes a regular on the PP, because he just does not have the talent to generate much there.

The $3m contract after a years of 17 and 32 pts was inexplicable, and not even remotely close to a hometown discount. I was really disappointed in Flip for holding out for that much and knew it would create problems for the team. Many of us were all for Holland letting Flip go to arbitration, where he would not have been rewarded with anything close to $3m for a year or two -- was Holland really afraid Filppula would turn into a $4m+ player in a mere year or two?
