titanium2 867 Report post Posted July 19, 2009 I miss Steve so much. Some guys you just wish could play forever. There will never be another like him. Best player in NHL history. Not one other player in the top 6 all time in points was even close to as good as Steve was defensively. Best all-around player ever. I hope one day to see Yzerman behind our bench. He's proof that you can teach defense. That is, if you're willing to learn. It's amazing how some players just aren't willing though. And I don't see Yzerman as a coach. If he's got the mind for it, he could take Kenny's spot when he's done, which is half-jokingly when Lidstrom retires, who is another guy that I wish can play forever. 17 years in a row of playoff appearances, I'd say 15 years of cup contention, and it's no coincidence that it began when Lidstrom first came over. DatsyukownzU13 1 Report post Posted July 19, 2009 The triple OT winner against the Blues where he took it from Gretzky-- still gives me chills. I was shocked they left it out of the NHL Network top 10 list. These were the exact two things I was going to come on here to write about that goal. Classic. paulwoodsfan 52 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 The goal I would absolutely love to see again was scored very early in his first season, probably about two or three weeks in. It was at home against Buffalo. He came in one-on-one against Mike Ramsey (a very good defensive defenceman), put the puck through Ramsey's skates for a breakaway and then wired one past Barrasso (who ended up beating him out for rookie of the year). I was living in Toronto at the time and taped the Buffalo broadcast. Even the Buffalo play-by-play guy, Ted Darling, was impressed. I can still hear him, "Oh, great move! . . . He scores!" That same game went to OT and Yzerman came out of nowhere on the right wing to score the game-winner for a 6-5 Wings win. He then went over and high-fived "the Winger," a San Diego Chicken-type mascot the Wings had in those days. I had all this on tape but sadly, the tape was lost or stolen when I moved a few years later. What I wouldn't give to see those two goals again.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 Really? I guess a lot of people seem to feel that way. Myself, while it was fun to watch it happen and see the Wings win that game and the series that night, I've never thought that was a "great goal." Gretzky was lazy on that play and just let the puck bounce off his stick and didn't even try to retrieve it, and Casey was awful on the goal. When I think of a "great goal" I think of one like that Avalanche goal in both the TSN and NHL Network videos where he shoots short side on Roy, and it looks like there's no possible way the puck could get in, and yet it does. And it wasn't a mistake by Roy - there was nothing he could have done to stop it. That's a "great goal." No way man. Triple OT game 7 playoff winning goal on a top corner slapshot from outside the blueline? Dude- that was amazing. There's something to be said for sexy regular season goals, but score a great goal in that situation? Clutch play is a huge part of being a truly great player, and that goal is as clutch as it gets. Part of me is ok with being too young to remember the years when the Wings needed a chicken mascot.
sputman 1,268 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 One of my favorite Yzerman goals, that I can't seem to find and doesn't get enough attention, is when he flips the puck over Kevin Lowe into the empty net, and Mickey starts yelliing "He flipped it over him! He flipped it over him!"
Ram 240 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 I don't have to watch either of these to know that the best Yzerman goal was the double OT winner against the Blues. That goal is more vivid in my mind than the first time i got laid. Could not agree more with this. Also, thanks for posting these. Finally, I enjoy vintage Mickey quotes such as "That's what I'm talking about when I said 'Changing his clothes in a phonebooth.'"

P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 (edited) The St. Louis goal, he totally strips Gretzky and breaks up ice full speed. Yzerman is faster than Gretzky and going the other direction, so it's not like Gretzky really had a chance to get the puck back. Yzerman sniping the top corner from just inside the blue line and Casey not being able to stop it was great. Maybe not his greatest, but deserving of being on the list. Not trying to change the subject of this thread, but I was just watching this game and saw this: Fedorov was doing then what Zetterberg is doing now (well not now exactly). Edited July 20, 2009 by P. LeftWinger 5,152 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 watching these, it just proves that no matter how much Buttman and the NHL try, the ONLY things that Cindyrella has in common with Yzerman is a Cup and a C... on a side note this goes to show you that you cannot have a top 10 goals by Steve Yzerman. Of his nearly 700 goals, a good half of them would be HIGHLIGHT real. Anyhow, how can there be two top 10 goals list without this one?

They're trying to compare whiny face to our Stevie? Since when? I thought the comparison for him was Gretzky? That was annoying enough.
titanium2 867 Report post Posted July 20, 2009 Fedorov was doing then what Zetterberg is doing now (well not now exactly). Fedorov in his prime during the early to mid nineties was some of the greatest magic I've ever seen from the sport of hockey.
