Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 I could understand rejecting Afinogenov on the basis of cost... he will probably cost way to much for us, and he doesn't fill any glaring needs... but anyone who would reject an inexpensive Afinogenov knows nothing about hockey (particularly if you are a person who would prefer signing a Bertuzzi, Peca, Shanahan, or one of the other over-the-hill wastes)... Afinogenov is 29, and has been slowed by injuries, but more than capable of recapturing his hot hands without the pressure of being a top scorer. Tell him we'll give him a 1.25 million a season for two years and he can room with Meech so he feels important and tall.

mmamolo 287 Report post Posted July 28, 2009 I cant believe some ppl would give him $2M. In my mind that is insane. He's had a couple terrible years and is going to have a tough time finding a spot on any NHL team. That doesnt mean that he doesnt have the talent to play in these league but for whatever reason he hasn't shown that he can for the last couple of years. If Detroit really wanted to get him personally I would only be satisfied with it being for $1M on a one year deal. If he proves his worth he gets a raise next year. That's it, no favors to unproven players
Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted August 3, 2009 Well for what its worth, I think a move for Maxim would do him good. He had a good rapour with Pasha whilst both were playing for Moscow Dynamo in the lock out year. At what cost would he be willing to play for? I'm sure some KHL team will offer him more than he could make in the NHL. He has great hands, and if all his injuries have healed has the speed to back alot of D men off to deep. On a line with Dats and Mule could be just what could see him flourish. He's only had 3x20+ goal seasons so far and only hit 50+ pts twice, not a $3.5m player by any means but I suppose most of his time with his only NHL side has been on poor teams. You only have to look at Sammys record before he came to Detroit for evidence of what a move to the Wings can do for a player. Pre Wings PL 188 19+30 = 49pts -11 : With Wings PL 278 67+92=159pts +49: What is interesting with Max's stats is the 2 big pts years he has had he was +25, whilst stuggling when not scoring heavy with a -52 rating. Jury is out on him for most fans but could he be the next Redwings project? At 29 he has some years left in him and after all Sammy was 28 when we picked him off the scrapheap. If Lilja is put on LTIR, would the $1.25m be enough to use in getting Afinogenov, worth a gamble or not? I'd take a chance for a year, after all its next season when we'll be big players in the market.
Zion 93 Report post Posted August 3, 2009 Grab him for 2 mill, hey he cant be anyworse then Sammy was Samuelsson played solid defensively, and had some clutch playoff goals. Afinogenov will provide zero defense and had one good playoff. But hey, we need a new whipping boy, let's pay him 2.5M. This board seems to think he's worth it. cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted September 17, 2009 From TSN : Maxim Afinogenov has earned a tryout with the Atlanta Thrashers. ... "He's a high-end guy, a skill guy," Thrashers general manager Don Waddell told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It doesn't hurt, we'll see what happens." Maybe the humidity in Atlanta is affecting Mr. Waddell's judgement.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted September 17, 2009 This thread comes up every month now and it's still the same answer. We don't need a lazy, unmotivated europuss who looks like a donkey. There's a reason Lindy Ruff treated this lazy ass like s*** for the last several seasons. He's got some speed and stickhandling skills, but the rest is crap, as is his confidence. mmamolo 287 Report post Posted September 18, 2009 Personally, I think in the right situation he could turn things around and be a decent contributor. I don't, however, think he will ever become a top tier talent in this league. He's definitely not worth the money it seems liek it would have taken to sign him earlier this summer but it does speak volumes that he is willing to travel to Atlanta on his own dime for a tryout as opposed to signing somewhere in the KHL. All that being said, even though I mentioned in a previous post that I thought he'd have a hard time finding a spot on any NHL roster this year, I am a bit surprised he's only on a tryout basis right now. I figured he'd have to bum around the league and eventualyl accept a cheap 1 yr contract but I thought by preseason he'd have a contract somewhere. Either way, I think Atlanta ends up signing him. Maybe Kovalchuk and Antropov will give him a hand.
Yak19 303 Report post Posted September 18, 2009 Afinogenov will play for the Thrashers this season. He's got talent just needs a change in scenery. Other news: Sykora signed with the Wild Malholtra getting a tryout from the SJ Sharks
BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted September 18, 2009 I'm surprised he isn't in the KHL yet, he's the type of player that has KHL written all over him.
