From Mlive

Second, Team Sweden executive director Bengt-Ake Gustafsson released a preliminary list of 34 players which from which Sweden will draw upon for its 2010 Olympic team, with a few more players likely to be named to the final list in September. The Swedish news agency TT reports that Gustafsson named five Red Wings in Nicklas Lidstrom, Niklas Kronwall, Tomas Holmstrom, Johan Franzen, and Jonathan Ericsson to his preliminary roster, as well as Grand Rapids Griffins starter Daniel Larsson;

Am I missing something? Why isn't Z mentioned?

Sweden Wins Gold Medal *Wings Players Dominate* Told ya!!

Current mood: contemplative.gif ecstatic

Category: Sports Just wanted to say how happy I am that Sweden Won the Gold Medal in Men's Ice Hockey today.

As some of you may know, there were 5 Detroit Red Wings on Team Sweden's Roster.

Nicklas Lidstrom

Henrik Zetterberg

Tomas Holmstrom

Niklas Kronwall

Mikael Samuelsson

Sweden beat Finland by a score of 3-2. All three of Sweden's goals came from Red Wing Players, including Nicklas Lidstrom's Game-Winning goal 10 seconds into the 3rd Period.

Henrik Zetterberg scored the first goal of the goals, and Niklas Kronwall scored the second. Nicklas Lidstrom then blasted a rocket from over 50 feet away that was just inches under the top cross-bar, possibily even grazing it, on a 4 on 4 powerplay. That goal sealed the game and captured the Gold Medal for Team Sweden, thier first since 1994.

Nicklas Lidstrom was by far the most dominate player on the ice the entire game long, going to show why he is the best Defensmen in the entire World.

This was a remarkable team, and they were so fun to watch. The favorites to win the Gold this year were Canada, Czech Republic, and Russia. Not to many people picked Sweden to win Gold, none that I know of matter of fact.

But I did. This was one of my favorite hockey teams of all time, and I am proud to say that they won the Gold Medal today.

Now let's hope the Swedish winning way continues thourgh the rest of the NHL Season, where Detroit can bring Lord Stanely home, where it belongs, here in Hockeytown.

Yeah the Lidstrom goal was something like... Norris Trophy... something....

And the proper way to pronounce Zetterberg is Setterbear.

When they score it's like...

Ja ja ja ja ja!!!

Have people suddenly become Team Sweden fans? If Team Sweden doesn't get Zettterberg... GOOD! That means a better chance for Canada or USA to win gold.

Or USA? Bah. Canada, Sweden or Russia. Otherwise I'm sad. And I'm only supporting Russia out of loyalty to Fedorov and Datsyuk.

And Cleary better make Team Canada... otherwise my loyalties are even more conflicted. I mean Team Sweden is basically the Red Wings plus some guys they would've drafted if they could've picked higher (man I'm jealous we don't have Eriksson).

And by the way- if you go to the original Swedish article linked to on Mlive it lists Zetterberg right up at the top of the 34 players.

Well, since Great Britain won't be getting the chance in 2010 to recapture the Gold that they won in 1936, I guess its back to rooting for Sweden again.

Russia will be fun to watch, and as usual I hope Canuckistan falls flat on its face due to its insufferably arrogant fans (sorry LGWers from north of the border).

:ranting: A Brit complaining about Canadian arrogance? You guys taught us everything we know...

Yep this is just a very preliminary list that doesn't really mean a lot.

I do think it's good to see that Ericsson and Larsson are on there though. Larsson doesn't have that much of a chance of making the team, but Ericsson might.

Those are great! Hell, on the Zetterberg goal, the only non Red Wing out there was Backman! Nice! (well prior to Sammy leaving too!)

edit: also, who else is in favor of putting the dots over the players "O" on the NHL jersey as well? Even spell the names like they are supposed to be spelled (the Russians for example) and even the other nationalities, the accent, hyphens or whatever elese they are called! How do I get my keyboard to type those letters?

Hell yeah, I was just going to add it :) Kronwall, assisted by Zetterberg and with Homer in front of the net. It doesn't get much better than that.

It's a nice idea, but how many people can read the russian alphabet?

Update 5:02 AM: Henrik Zetterberg was named to the preliminary roster, but the Sedins, Mikael Samuelsson, and Nicklas Backstrom were left off the roster, and there's no doubt that they'll crack Sweden's official list, which, again, won't come out until mid-to-late September. Gustafsson's current roster is just a preliminary list, but it's good to see Larsson on it.
