Cup Count

I'm playing in one of my dynasty modes on NHL 09 and counting the Cups the Detroit Red Wings have acutally won and the ones that I've one on the game I'm one Stanley Cup away from tieing the Habs with 24 Stanley Cups and that got me thinking about what can Detroit do realistically as far as getting that close before Toronto or Montreal win another Cup.

I know the The Wings have 11 Cups, the Leafs have 13, and the Habs have 24. What do you really think (please be realistic) the Detroing Red Wings can do to get close to either the Leafs or even the Habs before either one of them win another Championship?

Both Toronto and Montreal are showing signs of improvement year after year and I think they are both close to winning another Stanley Cup but I'm not sure if the Wings win more before they do. I know that 24 is quite far-fetched for Detroit to get that anytime soon.

Honestly, I think we can may be able to tie Toronto and maybe even get one ahead of them and definetly it would have helped that out alot if we could have got it done this year too. I still believe out of these three we do have the best chance to win another Cup the soonest. What do you all think. How close can Detroit get to the Leafs or the Habs before either team wins another Cup??

I'd say the Habs are closer to winning the Cup again before Toronto. Last season was basically re-building mode for them. I'd say with the signings they've made this offseason, the Leafs will at least be able to contend for the playoffs. But as far as winning the Cup goes, they're still a long way off. The Habs had way too much baggage last season, with the Carbonneau firing, the Kovalev saga, the team struggling, the links to drug dealers, and barely squeaking into the playoffs as the 8th seed. However, they made strides in the free agents they brought in, which I think will be able to get them at least past the first round. As far as winning the Cup, not this year.

Catching Toronto is in the realm of possibility. Montreal, on the other hand, would take a while. I am willing to try, though.

Well first of all the leafs don't actually have that many cups. Toronto has that many but not the leafs. I think its realistic to think the wings could tie the leafs or pass them before the leafs win again. Their defense is starting to shape up but without some quality forwards or even half decent forwards which the leafs lack right now they won't be contenders for a while.

I thought the Wings were tied with the Leafs. The Leafs have 11, while the city of TO has 13, and the Wings have 11 now. As for the Habs I don't think anyone will ever catch them. With 30 teams and the closest two teams are 13 behind I just don't see it. I would think Montreal would win one before Det or TO won 13 more.

I think Detroit could definitely pass Toronto within the next decade (hopefully sooner) as the mold doesn't seem formed in Toronto JUST yet, however, I wouldn't be surprised if in that next decade, Detroit managed to pull off 3, while Toronto actually won 1 as Burke knows how to build a winner and they will be contenders soon enough... I actually can't see Montreal even being a serious contender again within the next decade, Gainey is all over the place and to blow them out like he did, they're basically in rebuild mode, meaning it will more than likely be 5 years before they're even competitive, let alone serious contenders - in the next decade, I say the 5 most likely teams to be serious contenders are:

Detroit

Pittsburgh

Philadelphia

Washington

Chicago

"I say the 5 most likely teams to be serious contenders are:

I think Pitt will be a flash in the pan. This isn't sour grapes, just an objective opinion. . . the Pens ran into a "hurt" Detroit team in the Finals, in addition to the "human" element favoring the Pens, that translated into a Cup. IMO, I don't think the Pens addressed their biggest need, defense. I am also of the opinion that Fleury played the way he had to for Games 6 and 7, and he got some lucky breaks. If I remember correctly, the Wings hit 5 posts in those 2 games. I do not see Pitt winning their division this year, maybe getting a 4 or 5 seed, and being knocked out in Round 2.

Chicago is in a world of hurt due to ineptitude in the front office. They are stuck with Campbell and Huet's contracts, did not address their serious D needs, and have very little money to re-sign their youth core. IMO, Chicago is one and done after next year, barring some miraculous deals that frees up money and allows them to sign Toews, Keith, Kane, Seabrook, etc. . . I don't see it happening.

Philly is, well Philly. They are almost as bad as the Sharks. High expectations and then crumble when they need to play their best. I'll save judgment on the Flyers until once the season gets going.

Caps are hungry and they should be around along with Boston.

In the West, of course the Wings, but the Ducks surprised me last year. Those are the 2 teams I see in the West. Sharks are in cap hell and need a facelift. Flames are about a second round exit and no better. Hawks this year CAN be good, but they got spanked by a hurt Wings team and Hossa was not the answer. Canucks will never win with Luongo. He gets touted every year how he will win a Cup, and fails. Plus, their D took a hit in the off-season.

Of course, free agency can change anything, but this is how I see it as of right now. . . again, just my opinions.

As some already mentioned, we've already tied the Leafs. We can beat Toronot well before they win another Cup, I'm certain.

Nobody else is really even close to us and Toronto.

Montreal's record will never be beaten, though. Unless the league shrinks considerably, that is.

I gotta agree, the Habs will get a Cup before the Leafs will. Not sure when Detroit will get another Cup but I do believe that the Wings can pass the Leafs in Cups before the Leafs can get one more. Montreal is a team that is up and coming they've had some problems in the past and I think they are rectfying their situation and becoming a better all-around team.

If the Wings can get another Stanley Cup within the next 3 to 5 seasons I think they have a great chance to pass the Leafs.

I apologize for the mistake of saying the Leafs have 13 Cups instead of saying Toronto has 13 Cups. I can see Montreal winning a Stanley Cup in a few seasons but I don't think it will be this coming season or the season after.

It was the same franchise, though. Just a different name. Well, two different names. (Arenas & St. Pats)

Not everybody understands that teams change names, even if the Wings themselves changed names twice and once wore yellow sweaters.

MOST of those 24 cups is pre-expansion. Detroit can def. catch up. Toronto... eh no so much. they're f***ed.

Well, were their rosters completely the same? Sometimes they were separate teams, but I'm not sure if this is the case with the St. Pats and Arenas and Leafs. Sometimes there's really no continuity.
