Aaron Downey gets NHL Coyotes try-out

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Former Red Wing Aaron Downey spoke to The Fan 590's Don Landy and Elliotte Friedman on Thursday, discussing the following topics:

His hopes of latching on with the Phoenix Coyotes, who gave him an amateur try-out contract;

The fact that the AHL may be a harder league to play in than the NHL due to its travel and back-to-back-to-back games;

His off-season training program at his farm in Shelburne, Ontario (he's helping Wings prospect Jamie Tardif bulk up);

The strongest Red Wings (he suggests that Kris Draper is the best-conditioned athlete he's ever seen, with Pavel Datsyuk a close second);

And his belief his House9 charity can help promote hockey all over the world, at least eventually

Its a good listen. Am very intruiged about the work hes doing with Tardif (Whos contracted to Detroit, in GR).

I hope he lands with someone this season. He's one of the few guys in the league that really seems like a genuinely good man. Very giving with his money, and more importantly, his time. Always willing to stick up for a teammate, even if it means taking a fw fists to the face, never loses his composure. He's also a fan favorite and a popular guy in the lockerroom.

I'm a bummer that the Wings can't really fit him into a regular spot on the roster. I really liked the guy during his time here, but he's just such a poor skater that it's hard to justify giving him ice time. I wish the best to him; he's a character guy and a decent enforcer.

class act who is great with young players. i'm thinking that he was offered a 2 way deal by us but choose to go on a pro try out like he said. If he does accept a 2 way deal this year it will be with us.

I think Holland already announced that Downey would not be offered a contract, that would presumably include a 2way contract.

Besides, he'ss rot here. I'd rather see him somewhere that he might see more than 4 games with the big team in a year.

Also, the Wings have no room on their roster for him. To keep him up, they'd have to lose either Draper or Maltby, and those guys are crucial to the Wings success in '09.

Downey said he turned down all 2 way deals this year because he did not want to play in the minors anymore so basically he is either playing in the nhl or nothing. my point is he told holland this and turned down his two way offer. If he was willing to reprise the same roll he did last year for the wings then he would be a Griffin/ depth red wing right now.

I doubt he's interested in reprising his role from last year. 4 games seems like more of a tease than a job.

Thanks for the link. :thumbup:

Glad to see he's getting a chance with Phoenix. Aaron's a great guy, I only wish him the best.

I feel really bad that he couldn't stick around with Detroit last year due to cap issues, but at least he won a Cup with us, so it's not like he can call his stint in Detroit a bust.

He'll love Hamilton. :P

I've actually seen him play in Hamilton! (Against the Bulldogs)

Pretty cool guy, I was watching him through the glass when all of a sudden he checked into me :D

I wish nothing but the best for him, wasn't a good on ice fit here, from what I heard was a great fit in the locker room though. Sounds like another guy who will be a great prospect coach in the future.

Good Luck Downey!
