Louisville 112 Report post Posted September 28, 2009 Wings are older. How long can they hold on? They've been 'too old' for a this entire decade.
anthonyn66 89 Report post Posted September 28, 2009 On TSN's 30 teams in 30 days, Detroit is ranked 3rd. On Sportsnet's Power Ranking, Detroit is 2nd, behind Pittsburgh. Thoughts? http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=292956 http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/09/28/week1/
cjm502 165 Report post Posted September 28, 2009 Thoughts? Well, I believe the Wings should be ranked 1st.
Chunkylover 26 Report post Posted September 28, 2009 What's great about that TSN page is that there is a poll on the side asking who will win the Cup. Vancouver is first with 21%, then Toronto at 8.5%, Pittsburgh at 8%, Philly at 6.5%, and Montreal and Detroit tied at 6.4%.

Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted September 29, 2009 lol. Retarded. When there hasn't been a single regular season game played the first two choices on the power rankings are easy-- Cup winner & Runner-up. Anything else is moronic.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted September 29, 2009 Am I the only person on Earth that doesn't see what makes the Pens so much better than the Wings or any other team? They're good, don't get me wrong. Well, I guess considering how much worse the Wings got in so many people's eyes that they're still in 2nd is a compliment. mjlegend 155 Report post Posted September 29, 2009 Am I the only person on Earth that doesn't see what makes the Pens so much better than the Wings or any other team? Shame on you. Captain Sidney is going to stalk you in your shower for your sins! Seriously, they won the cup, lost a few crappy, hacky defencemen (and Scuderi, who isn't that crappy) and lost basically just a few other guys they healthy-scratched in the reg. season or playoffs, and gained a healthy Gonchar. If they had Yzerman or Messier as captain, I'd call them favorites. But we'll see how Sid leads this team in their victory lap this year. They coudl finish anywhere from first to tenth. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted September 29, 2009 The funny thing when I was reading TSN was it said we're still heavily depending on veterans like Holmstrom, Draper and Maltby I could see Draper for PK and faceoffs, but all of them have decreased roles and are bigtime on the decline. mjlegend 155 Report post Posted September 29, 2009 BTW, the comments section of any TSN article is a glorious collection of the absolute stupidest things ever delineated on the internet. You won't find any one place on the internet in Canada with more different people saying variations of: "I don't like them, therefore, they suck!" - This team is older and slower. They've lost so many players by trying to low ball them in the hopes that they'll sign for the sake of signing. The organizational depth is being depleted and now that Bowman has bowed out, this team is going to struggle. Time for a rebuild. - They lost too much talent. Hossa,Jiri and Chelios. They should be ranked 5 or higher. - I am no fan of the wings; I find Lidstrom to be the most overrated d-man to ever play the game. I mean, how is it even possible to award the Norris to a guy who's also a Lady Bing candidate every year? The guys they lost weren't replaced in the summer, so expect an early playoff exit for the wings. A good thing, IMO. - I laugh at those who proclaim the Red Wings as a model franchise...they got lucky with a few draft choices...end of story. If you want model sports franchises, look at the Canadians (most cups ever), or the Steelers (most Superbowls ever), or the Yankees, etc. Detroit can't even fill their own arena anymore...and now they've opted out of their lease for force the hand of the tax payers...the Windsor Wings has a nice ring to it! Lovin Jiri Fischer 147 Report post Posted September 29, 2009 Do these writers all plagiarize after each other? I swear I've heard this exact same article like 6 other times. The Wings are too old. They are so dependent on their only good players Draper, Maltby, Holmstrom, McCarty, Lidstrom, and Howe. Once they retire in a few years the younger teammates can kiss winning a game goodbye. Osgood sucks. They lost Hossa who had a very important 40 regular season goals, therefore they can't win the Cup if they can't make up those 40 goals. My prediction: Wings finish 0-82. So teams should model there franchises around a team that played in the 70's (b/c the league hasn't changed) with the talent pool located right in its backyard, not as many teams in the league, oh and let's not forget before a ******* salary cap. Good luck with that, what a ******* idiot. Another favorite, yes Lidstrom is overrated because as always you want your #1 dman getting penalties, lord knows the #1 shouldn't be on the ice to play the pk instead....... Lastly, losing Chelios? really Chelios? Who wrote this comment? Chelios? oh one more we lost a lot of speed in Jiri ******* Hudler, Sammy, Kopecky, everyone knows they were bruisers with blazing speed..... I'm not even trying to say we deserve top 5 or we won't struggle, but if you are going to argue that at least put some logic behind your points. Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted September 29, 2009 I'm actually surprised Boston isn't higher up on everybody's list. Yeah, so they got ousted from the playoffs. But they are hardly the first team to get to a playoff with some young guys and falter. They've been there, been embarrassed and I think they're out to prove something. Goaltending = check (reigning Vezina winner Thomas) Defense = check (reigning Jennings winners with fewest Goals Against) + (reigning Norris winner Chara, Wideman provides added offense and Stuart, Ference & Derek Morris are serviceable. Not overly talented bunch but Chara makes huge difference. Offense = check (Savard, Ryder, Krejci, Kobasew, Lucic, Wheeler & Recchi) Toughness/Size/Fighting = check (Thornton, Lucic, Chara & Stuart alone combined for 34 fighting majors last season) Take a team that has alot of good ingredients, 2 good top lines and good role players still in guys like Bergeron and Sturm, add in toughness, stingy defense, solid goaltending and the fact that they got embarrassed and have a chip on their shoulder......that's a team to be reckoned with IMO. If there are worse sports fans on earth than Montreal Canadien fans I would like to see them. It always "We won 26 cups". No one mentions that they had the upper hand on every team in the league up until the 70's when they had first choice of every Quebec born player. Imagine if Toronto had first choice of Ontario born players. Or if Detroit had first pick of Michigan born players. I dont count any Montreal Cup victories before 1980.
