MannyK 16 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 They won the Cup. It happens. At least the commercials this year will show us beating them, and will appear that we won!
Snazzy 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 What's funny is these 'experts' neglect to tell you that s***tsburgh took backsteps in the offseason while other teams (*cough* Flyers *cough* Maple Leafs *cough*) got bigger, tougher, and better. I'm not worried about the Penguins, they're not going to be anything special this year. While they *might* make the playoffs, they won't go deep. Wings will surprise everyone again and excel! beepbeep 3 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 I think they will fall on their ass like every team not named Wings or Devils have in recent years.

Travis 576 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 I'm already sick of hearing Crosby's name. Watching Sportscenter right now to relive the Tigger's defeat of the Twins and my good time is interrupted by Melrose and Barnaby. Melrose just talked up Chicago's great offseason (which they had) by adding that they, "almost beat Detroit last year". Really? Where was I?
Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 I hear a lot of whining from my fellow Wings fans in here. Sorry guys, but with a locked up core that is only getting better, a goaltender that is unbeatable when he is on, and finally some at least competent wingers, the Penguins have every right to get praise this year. They have the grail. Detroit does not. It's up to them to earn their praise.
dropkickshanahans 463 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 I think all of you should show some class instead of being a bunch of biased homers. The refs didn't give them the game at all. We had two chances to put away the series but couldn't. Despite shutting down their top scorers, we couldn't get the goals we needed from our top scorers (I'm looking at you Hossa). They were just the hungrier team that came out on top and deserved it just as much as we did if we had won. Both goalie's played outstanding, and I'm sold on Fleury. Why wouldn't I be? He's made it to the SCF two year's in a row. Finally won the 2nd time. He was facing a game 6 and 7 elimination and rose up to the occasion as the best player in those final two games when everyone though he couldn't handle it mentally. So he definitely solidfied himself and his teammates won't have a problem anymore believing in him to make the saves when they need it the most. With that said I don't see why they won't be favorites to make it back to the SCF when they have such a young, talented team. It's gonna be hard for sure, but they have such a great system now that they believe in that I don't understand why people would be so surprised to see it happen again. In fact, I hope they do so we meet up with them again to settle the score; the best out of 3. But in the meantime, stop being such homers and making excuses that the refs helped them or that we were injured and tired, because looking at our depth and the position we were in to actually win it, I'm not buying it. They fought back and stuck it to us in the end, and that's all there is to it.
Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 When oh when will the excuses stop? We lost. Pittsburgh outplayed us. They won. So to the victor go the spoils and part of that is a s***load of press and commercials and interviews and articles and magazine covers.....the whole nine yards. If you don't like it, move into a cave for the whole season and only come out next July. I'm beginning to grow very weary of this. If you're tired of reading how someone thinks Pittsburgh will be great this season.......STOP READING. If you knew that slamming your hand in a car door would make your hand hurt, would you intentionally keep slamming your hand in the car door only to turn around and complain it hurt? Hell no, you'd look like a fool.
MidMichSteve 1,115 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 (edited) Games Minutes Majors PIM PIM/G Pittsburgh 24 97 7 279 11.8 Detroit 23 86 6 224 9.8 Looks even to me. Game 5 Although it may look even, the Pens gooned it up in the game 5 blowout. Pittsburgh had 18 penalty minutes in that one game, not counting the 40 misconduct minutes, while Detroit had only 4. They won and we lost. Can't wait for the season to start. Edited October 1, 2009 by MidMichSteve
RedWingedKitten 9 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 So am I the only one who is hoping to make this a best of 3? It would piss off the other 28 teams so much.
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 (edited) Refs/league will favor them, plain in simple. I still don't buy the whole turnaround last year they had late in the season, and after watching their games during the playoffs and seeing the stat "least penalized" team it just doesnt add up for me. It's comments like this that just further the whole "the league favors the Pens BS." The complaining on here about the Pens and Crosby is vastly more annoying than seeing Crosby and the Pens in so many ads. If you want to just look at the numbers, the Wings had more power play opportunities in the finals last year. Now, you can argue that they should have had even more, but that's a much more subjective argument and where bias would come in. In terms of total penalty minutes, the Wings were the 2nd lowest in the entire league last year, while the Pens were right around the middle of the pack. The Wings were + 26 (26 more power plays for than against), the Pens were +13. People can piss and moan all they want (which really gets tiresome), but the numbers don't really back up the claims. mmamolo 287 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 Games Minutes Majors PIM PIM/G Pittsburgh 24 97 7 279 11.8 Detroit 23 86 6 224 9.8 Looks even to me. For me it's not about the total penalty minutes but the quality and timing of those calls. I remember game 3 of the finals and Ericsson got called for Interference and Gonchar went on to score. To me that was a call that they had been letting go all game long and then in a tie game with ten minutes to go they make that call. FOr me that was a tough one to swallow. Game 5 of the finals the Pens racked up four 10 minute misconducts and sure Detroit got powerplays but that was in a 5-0 game when Pittsburgh was gooning it up. For me it's not even a comparison between Detroit and Pittsburgh. It just seemed to me that the WIngs got a lot of penalties called against them in very advantageous times for the other team while they'd go on the powerplay when the games fate is all but sealed. Obviously this wasn't the case 100% of the time but from a numbers stand point you'll always see the refs and the league try to even things up. Problem is powerplays are more timing and situation basd as opposed to quantity based. I'd rather 1 powerplay late in the third with a tie game as opposed to 3 powerplays when we're leading 5-0. Obviously being a fan of the Wings I can't be 100% unbiased but I do try to be as unbiased as I possibly can. For me it's not about sulking or whining that PIttsburgh won because breaks are breaks and we've gotten our share over the years. That being said I can understand the frustration some ppl feel. No matter how well the Wings do every year you have tons of ppl in the media claiming the Wings are too old, to soft, have goaltending issues and so on to go deep in the playoffs. After winning the cup in 2008 so many analysts didnt give them a chance. Where as a lot of ppl seem to be givign Pittsburgh more and more credit. Granted this summers media predictions are scattered you still see a lot of media personel loving off the penguins. To me they were and still are a very solid team. They may stumble a little bit from a hangover but at the end of the day they are a top four Eastern Conference team and will no doubt make it to the 2nd round at least. Draws in the playoffs are extremely important (as we saw last year in pittsburgh favour and against detroit, and we saw in 2008 to detroit's favour and against Pittsburgh). Once the playoff seeds are set anything can happen

Your pissing and moaning about other people pissing and moaning annoys me even more. And the finals PP opportunity stats doesnt tell the whole story when you account the little immature stunt the penguins pulled in game 5. 12 penaltys including 4 game mis-conducts in the third. Sorry you can tell me im bias, and yes i probably am but i don't believe the finals was called fairly at all. Plain in simple, anyone who watches play-off hockey knows what im talking about. Someone above already made some good points i dont need to get into it any further.
Free_Candy 38 Report post Posted October 1, 2009 Honestly, coming from someone on the other side of the fence, it's not like that kind of hype and talk really does us any favors. We probably won't crash and burn but any hockey realist knows that repeating these days is VERY difficult. What talking heads say and write has no bearing on what happens in June. I've never been big on predicting Cup winners before the trade deadline anyway. A lot can happen in a season and sometimes that extra player or two is the tipping point in one's favor.
