tdinc 45 Report post Posted October 3, 2009 I understand Its the first game and its not even here in the states. but I think the Wings looked tired after the second, and were out skated the rest of the game. Or have I lost my mind with posting this so early?
MabusIncarnate 5,359 Report post Posted October 3, 2009 I'd vote a little bit premature, the first few games of any new NHL season are always a little strange, and it takes some adjustment time. I'd be more in question about things like this after the first 6 or 7 games. A healthy Kariya is usually a dangerous Kariya, a player I think many people overlooked as an asset to St. Louis' team. Zetts 236 Report post Posted October 3, 2009 I'd agree with your analysis, but if you're projecting for the rest of the season I'd say it's premature. We'll be fine. I do expect the first part of the season to be a little painful. The Wings forgot how to play defense last year because of the fire power, which is now gone. You can't just turn the defensive play on and off. We'll get it worked out though.
FedorovMan91 1 Report post Posted October 3, 2009 I do not think we played bad in the first period and till the mid of the 2nd period. But like the last season, since we allowed a PK goal from Kariya, the Wings look almost like a high school team in the defensive zone and got knocked down. Besides, Stuart was still awful while Kronwall looked a bit better, and Osgood was not in his game.
gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted October 3, 2009 I wouldn't be worried if it was a home game, but to me, these games in Sweden hold maybe less water even than an exhibition game. I'll start thinking about what the team needs 10 or so games in, and even then, it'll just be some thinking...no panic, no hate, no heads rolling...just some thinking once there's something logical that can be derived from analysis. Carman 387 Report post Posted October 3, 2009 Can't read too much into one game, but I do remember a couple things and if the trend continues then I complain about it to everyone until it gets resolved. Leino-flip, Bertuzzi, 4th line are the positives. PK and PP, Osgood, Lebda, Pav/Hank(Not really, but I expect more out of them) were the negatives.

I am not really into knocking players, but I can't see calling Bertuzzi a positive in the game, when he threw a pass right to a Blues' player that led to a goal, and he also skated right through the crease on another goal, where he could have helped clear it out. Being -2 is also not high on the list, either. On the topic, can't read much into one game. The team likes to look at 10 game segments, so I would wait until after 10. Maybe they were a little distracted from all the hoopla with all the Swedes in Sweden. Also, this was one of the first games that the majority of the team was on the ice at one time. Mason looked good, too.
dropkickshanahans 463 Report post Posted October 3, 2009 I only saw the 1st period and the last 13 minutes of the 3rd so I can't say a whole lot except that our checking lines looked really effective.

Being -2 is also not high on the list, either. Eh Zetterberg was also -2. While Bertuzzi should make a better play on that pass, the rebound was the problem not so much the back check. You can only do so much in today's game to deny a wide open net on a split second rebound, at least he was in the right position even though you would think his Selke Caliber center would be the first one back... I only counted him as a positive because he was getting chances and skating hard, he was creating a lot of room that will be used once Zetterberg gets back into game shape. Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted October 3, 2009 Bert took a whack at the puck, but he didn't get it. It was bang-bang play once Ozzie gave up the rebound.

Can't be signing free agents like they used to. You have to give your prospects earlier shots, now.

Gnredwing 10 Report post Posted October 3, 2009 Bertuzzi looked awful, specially that turnover that led to a goal. Maltby looked great which made my day. I wish Eaves played, bench Bertuzi and play Eaves. Burtuzzi is a fat f*** and should be in grand rapids. Hope Osgood plays better tomorrow.

hooon 1,089 Report post Posted October 3, 2009 when maltby is by far our best player... something isnt right. To be honest, it just felt a lot like last year. Playing 1/2 of a game and then relying on the last 2 minutes to try to catch up. Osgood looked no different than he did last year (but please, lets give the man a chance, he barely played preseason). I like the lines. I would have wanted filp on the second line, but i like how babs has it now. We have 3 scoring lines and that chemistry will work out in the coming games. I'm not that worried about replacing those "88 goals" that have become the new buzzword of the NHL. What i AM worried about is our defense/goaltending. All the talk in the offseason was about how the wings 'need to be better' in goal and on defense. Well duh.... But they did nothing (other than get worse) to both the defense and goaltending. I just dont see how the wings expect to play substantially better in these positions just because they 'need to'.
